Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s architecture has failed the body with its long heritage of purity of form and aesthetic of cleanliness. A resurgence of interest in flesh, especially in art, has led to a politics of abjection, completely changing traditional aesthetics, and is now giving light to an alternative discussion about the body in architecture. This book is dedicated to a future vision of the body in architecture, questioning the contemporary relationship between our Human Flesh and the changing Architectural Flesh. Through the analysis and design of a variety of buildings and projects, Flesh is proposed as a concept that extends the meaning of skin, one of architecture’s most fundamental metaphors. It seeks to challenge a common misunderstanding of skin as a flat and thin surface. In a time when a pervasive discourse about the impact of digital technologies risks turning the architectural skin ever more disembodied, this book argues for a thick embodied flesh by exploring architectural interfaces that are truly inhabitable. Different concepts of Flesh are investigated, not only concerning the architectural and aesthetic, but also the biological aspects. The latter is materialised in form of Synthetic Neoplasms, which are proposed as new semi-living entities, rather than more commonly derived from scaled-up analogies between biological systems and larger scale architectural constructs. These ’neoplasmatic’ creations are identified as partly designed object and partly living material, in which the line between the natural and the artificial is progressively blurred. Hybrid technologies and interdisciplinary work methodologies are thus required, and lead to a revision of our current architectural practice.

Book excerpt: "The liturgical reforms that have guided congregations over the last few decades have transformed what different denominations know about themselves and their worship. Worshipers are no longer spectators, but active participants in the ritual acts that once were the possession of the clergy. As the liturgy is modified, church buildings are altered." "How does all such change affect the architectural style of church buildings? Vosko provides a foundation for building or renovating a place of worship and presents a thorough checklist for spaces, art, furnishings, and appointments. He discusses many concerns and offers practical advice. He also presents issues that need further consideration in every project."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive reference of materials for interior designers and architects Choosing the right material for the right purpose is a critical—and often overlooked—aspect in the larger context of designing buildings and interior spaces. When specified and executed properly, materials support and enhance a project's overall theme, and infuse interior space with a solid foundation that balances visual poetry and functionality. Materiality and Interior Construction imparts essential knowledge on how materials contribute to the construction and fabrication of floors, partitions, ceilings, and millwork, with thorough coverage of the important characteristics and properties of building materials and finishes. Individual coverage of the key characteristics of each material explores the advantages and disadvantages of using specific materials and construction assemblies, while helping readers discover how to make every building element count. In addition, Materiality and Interior Construction: Is highly illustrated throughout to show material properties and building assemblies Supplies rankings and information on the "green" attributes of each material so that designers can make informed decisions for specifications Is organized by application for easy and quick access to information Includes a companion website, featuring an extensive online image bank of materials and assemblies Rather than a typical catalog of materials, Materiality and Interior Construction is efficiently organized so that the reader is guided directly to the options for the location or assembly they are considering. Reliable and easy to use, Materiality and Interior Construction is a one-stop, comprehensive reference for hundreds of commonly used materials and their integration as building components—and an invaluable resource that every interior designer or architect should add to their set of tools.

Book excerpt: " To strengthen the contemporary focus of this volume, we have added about forty architects and have deleted some whose activity ceased before World War II. In making these decisions, we have been assisted by an Advisory Board. As in the first volume, we have continued to define the word "architect" very broadly, so as to include planners, theorists, structural engineers, and landscape architects whose work seems to be central to the enterprise of creating habitable spaces in our day." --Editor's note.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book investigates the theme of Modernism (1920-1960 and its epigones) as an integral part of tangible and intangible cultural heritage which contains the result of a whole range of disciplines whose aim is to identify, document and preserve the memory of the past and the value of the future. Including several chapters, it contains research results relating to cultural heritage, more specifically Modernism, and current digital technologies. This makes it possible to record and evaluate the changes that both undergo: the first one, from a material point of view, the second one from the research point of view, which integrates the traditional approach with an innovative one. The purpose of the publication is to show the most recent studies on the modernist lexicon 100 years after its birth, moving through different fields of cultural heritage: from different forms of art to architecture, from design to engineering, from literature to history, representation and restoration. The book appeals to scholars and professionals who are involved in the process of understanding, reading and comprehension the transformation that the places have undergone within the period under examination. It will certainly foster the international exchange of knowledge that characterized Modernism
