Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems in Sea Nettles explore relationships between people of three generations as they evolve over decades. At the center of many of the poems is a transgender child. The child's stubborn, gritty insistence on being true to herself is revealed, as well as the mother's struggles to come to terms with her child's identity, and the grandfather's loving relationship with this child. Like so many of us, the speaker in these poems often attempts to take refuge in "Foolish wishes, passing thoughts, dreams abandoned..." but she can't avoid the sharp truths that come with complicated relationships. And whose relationships, if they are true, if they are deep, are ever free of complications?

Book excerpt: This collection by the fantasy master has literally been over 20 years in the making! Each year, Mr. de Lint self-publishes a chapbook for private distribution. He gives copies to his wife, his friends, and colleagues, but does not offer them for sale. Book excerpt: The first-ever poetry book set on a llama farm, Daniel Lassell’s debut collection, Spit, examines the roles we play in the act of belonging. It is a portrait of a boy living on a farm populated with chickens sung to sleep by lullaby, captive wolves next door that attack a child, and a herd of llamas learning to survive despite coyotes and a chaotic family. The collection in part explores the role of the body in health and illness and one’s treatment of the earth and others. A theme of spirituality also weaves throughout the collection as the speaker treks into adulthood, yearning for peace amid the decline of his parents’ marriage. Driven by a “wish to visit / some landless landscape,” the speaker eventually leaves his family’s farm, only to find that return is impossible. After losing the farm and the llama herd to his parents’ divorce, the speaker wrestles with the role of presence as it relates to healing, remarking, “I wish enough, / to have only // these memories I have.” Unflinching at every turn, the collection pushes the boundaries of “home” to arrive upon new meaning, definition, and purpose.

Book excerpt: Goblets of gin, fans of feathers, war-bombed bricks, loaves of bread, soot, smoke, and paper money--such are the tangible things that touched the lives of women who worked as wage laborers during an era of Europe of cabaret and hyperinflation. The crises of modernity and capital, as well as the human experiences of women and who loved, lost, and fought against the structures of privilege that all the while aided them during a fraught stretch of time between wars, come alive in City Scattered, a chapbook of poems that invite us to experience and examine the conditions of labor that echo those of our current day. Book excerpt: Poetry. Jewish Studies. What good luck to finally have in English the writings of the brilliant Jerzy Ficowski, the poet who lived at least seventeen lives, fighting in the Warsaw Uprising, and later traveling for years with the Roma people through the roads of Poland, opposing his government, and watching the authorities ban his poems, a poet who translated from Spanish and Romanian and Yiddish and Roma, but most of all from the tongue of silence...Beautifully translated by Jennifer Grotz and Piotr Sommer, these poems also document the tragedy of the Holocaust, with the direct and uncompromising voice with which he reminds us of the great poets such as Różewicz and Świrszczyńska, while remaining, all the while, himself. Read a piece such as 'I was unable to save / a single life' in a bookstore, and I guarantee you will want to take this book with you, to keep it for the rest of your life.--Ilya Kaminsky Thanks to these brilliant, careful, inspired translations, we can now read Jerzy Ficowski, one of Poland's best kept secrets. This book is a marvel in its weird clarity and extraordinary range of styles and subjects, from the perfectly unassuming paradox of the title, all the way through to its final poems about bumblebees and Satie and mother nature, who scratches herself and 'shudders / with a tsunami.' How fortunate we are to have the unassailable evidence that all along, there was yet another genius of 20th century Polish poetry.--Matthew Zapruder

Book excerpt: Poetry. Pacific Islander Studies. Queer Studies. "Lehua M. Taitano was born on Guåhan (Guam), the largest of the Marianas Islands, to a Chamorro mother and a Euro-American father. When Taitano was four years old, her family migrated to the Appalachia mountains of North Carolina. Since that time, she has lived in many different places on the continental United States. The poetry in Taitano''s first collection, entitled A BELL MADE OF STONES, attempts to reconstruct the foundations of home through story, fragments, echo, and type. Chamorro people, indigenous to the Marianas archipelago in the region of Pacific known as Micronesia, once built their houses atop rows of ''latte,'' a two-tiered stone structure composed of a pillar and a capstone. The shape of the latte resembles a bell. These poems experiment with typographic representation and juxtaposition; in addition to the visual impact of these poems, Taitano bravely asks what it means to live a hyphenated, diasporic existence at the ''intersections of half-ness.'' With the typewriter as her canoe, Taitano chants homeward ''for the flightless, to stretch roots, for the husk of things set adrift.'' Lehua Taitano''s unforgettable poetry joins a new wave of Chamorro and Pacific literature. In A BELL MADE OF STONES, she bravely navigates the currents of mixed-race indigenous identity, transoceanic migration, and queer sexuality through a series of experimental (and lyrical) typographic poems. With the typewriter as her canoe, Taitano chants homeward ''for the flightless, to stretch roots, for the husk of things set adrift.''"—Craig Santos Perez "The journey through A BELL MADE OF STONES shifts us from empathetic observers to experiential participants. We are forced to engage with the unsettling disconnection and stress of locating a coherent voice and a culturally legible identity/identities in the fragments of loss and daily misrecognitions created by distance, diaspora and resistance to performing so-called hetero-normativity. Evoked instead of told, the poetry evolves into an installation that is beyond words, bearing witness to the stigma of enunciating through disconnected discourses. There is a surprisingly elegant, dignified aesthetic to the collapsed, repressed text that bares the raw marks of scarcely audible attempts at making meaning. While we are invited to find the lament left on the page, left with the palpable sense of what is missing and/or mistranslated. What is left to savor are the sparse, poignant leftovers—stringing together separate stories of mother, sisters, lover and other. But more than anything, we are left with the sense that the fragments are more (and less) than (and may never add up to) the sum of their parts."—Karlo Mila "A BELL MADE OF STONES is a synaesthestic kaleidoscope—where we listen to ''sheen'' and ''husk'' and ''rope,'' where the canoe can sing, and where what seems solid might ''settle as through a sieve.'' Taitano''s poems—her ''stampings''—pile-up lyrical language into gorgeous collisions of type. Yet, as ''visual evidence of the echo,'' the poems also gesture to what is not there, such as ''the surfacing and submergence of islands of sound'' made by a typewriter. As poet-guide, Taitano shows her reader how the map of her every day contains assumptions and aspersions cast by others, reminding us that she is ''with and without explanation.'' These are poems where a hyphen can be both a ''perforation'' and a ''stitch.'' Be patient. Wait out assumptions. Ready oneself for revelation."—Kaia Sand "Lehua Taitano''s A BELL MADE OF STONES formulates in its ''tethered tautly'' poems the truth of her birth and the necessity of her aesthetic address. Rich with protest, these poems map the ''story of [your] blood.'' These are ''heroic feats'' that endure with clairvoyant strength and keep asking if there is ''anything truer than truth.'' These poems keep replying, going beyond ''the bareness of lament.'' This is a fierce and brilliant collection of poems—chock-full of issued utterances, elliptical enjambments, cross-outs, and elision—all of which persevere in constructing an apt orchestration between the tongue''s experiment and typewriter''s keys. —Prageeta Sharma

As she tends to the souls of her patients—young and old, living last moments or navigating fundamentally altered lives—their stories provide unexpected healing for her own heartbreak. Balancing wonder and mystery with pragmatism and humor, Ellen Cooney (A Mountaintop School for Dogs and Other Second Chances) returns to Coffee House Press with a generous, intelligent novel that grants the most challenging moments of the human experience a shimmer of light and magical possibility.

Book excerpt: Reviewed by Anna StrongKevin Varrone's Box Score: An Autobiography spans across form -- from autobiography to history to visual art to the baseball rulebook to the prose poem -- content, and reading experience. Varrone's text, which he calls an autobiography, does almost everything in its power to thwart that somewhat restrictive classification. "Box Score" is made of a series of prose poems, each of which invokes Philadelphia history, baseball history (e.g. the first night game ever played between the Phillies and the Reds) Philadelphia baseball, a speaker's personal recollections ("police your area my dad would say as he smoothed dirt around the first base bag w/ his foot after a bad hop ate me up"), baseball terminology (page 78 is simply a line of a batter's statistics: g: 1 ab: 0 r: 0 h: 0 2b: 0 3b: 0 hr: 0 avg: .000), found language (Harry Kalas' famous "outta here" long ball call appears on page 73), and lyrical, evocative images that seem disembodied from -- and beautifully juxtapose -- the rest of the language ("I'd pick dandelions & snap their heads before they turned to wishes," page 19).

Winner of the 1999 Governor General's Award for Poetry and shortlisted for the 1999 Pat Lowther Award and the 1999 Dorothy Livesay Award for Poetry (BC Book Prize). SONGS FOR RELINQUISHING THE EARTH contains many poems of praise and grief for the imperiled earth drawing frequently on Jan Zwicky's experience as a musician and philosopher and on the landscapes of the prairies and rural Ontario. SONGS FOR RELINQUISHING THE EARTH was first published by the author in 1996 as a handmade book, each copy individually sewn for its reader in response to a request. It appeared between plain covers on recycled stock, with a small photo (of lavender fields) pasted into each copy. The only publicity was word of mouth. Part of Jan Zwicky's reason for having the author be the maker and distributor of the book was a desire to connect the acts of publication and publicity with the initial act of composition, to have a book whose public gestures were in keeping with the intimacy of the art. She also believed the potential audience was small enough that she could easily sew enough copies to fill requests as they came in. While succeeding in recalling poetry's public life to its roots, she was wrong about the size of that audience and her ability to keep up with demand as word spread, Hence, this facsimile edition. In publishing it, Brick Books has attempted to remain as faithful as possible to the spirit of those original gestures, while making it possible for more readers to have access to this remarkable book.

LEDI, the second book by Vancouver poet Kim Trainor, describes the excavation of an Iron Age Pazyryk woman from her ice-bound grave in the steppes of Siberia. Along with the woman's carefully preserved body, with its blue tattoos of leopards and griffins, grave goods were also discovered--rosehips and wild garlic, translucent vessels carved from horn, snow-white felt stockings and coriander seeds for burning at death. The archaeologist who discovered her, Natalya Polosmak, called her 'Ledi'--'the Lady'--and it was speculated that she may have held a ceremonial position such as story teller or shaman within her tribe. Trainor uses this burial site to undertake the emotional excavation of the death of a former lover by suicide. This book-length poem presents a compelling story in the form of an archaeologist's notebook, a collage of journal entries, spare lyric poems, inventories, and images. As the poem relates the discovery of Ledi's gravesite, the narrator attempts simultaneously to reconstruct her own past relationship and the body of her lover.

Book excerpt: Alone among artists, poets are at once blessed and burdened by the inherent semantic component and the tarnishing social employment of their linguistic medium. In an effort to define the mysterious and attractive power of poetic discourse, Emerson Marks undertakes a comparison of successive attempts to explain the phenomenon. TAMING THE CHAOS is an ambitious study of poetic language.
