Book excerpt: Feminist account of the chief writings of Therese Huber, the important 19th-c. German author. The German writer Therese Huber (1764-1829) lived at a time when women's activity outside the home was widely condemned, but the need to support themselves and their families forced many female writers to turn towards writing as ameans of earning their livelihood. Her prolific career, encompassing novels, short prose narratives and translations from French into German, besides the editing of a newspaper, demonstrates her ability to express herself while conforming to the male literary establishment. This study examines Huber's short prose narratives, showing the influence of various factors on women's writing, and the ways in which female writers incorporated dissent from the conventions into their works without jeopardising their professional and personal lives. Huber's works are both moralising, persuading her readers to become good housewives and mothers, and dissenting, constructing characters who refuse to abide by the norms. The author's feminist analysis of her narratives brings out their subtext of protest, showing how Huber negotiates for women's rights to self-expression.

Book Synopsis Mediating Order and Chaos by : Rodney Farnsworth
Download or read book Mediating Order and Chaos written by Rodney Farnsworth and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This literature-centered study offers an interdisciplinary approach to Romantic culture. If is pioneering in that it employs the complexity method of anthropology. Recent literary studies employ the complexity/chaos theory adapted from the natural sciences; however, here is presented for the first time a complexity method taken from the social/human sciences. This complexity method is useful in mediating not only contradictions within Romanticism, but the chaos of contemporary theories concerning it. One of the intensifying literary debates is that between the so-called “Greens” and “Reds,” naturalists and humanists. Mediating Order and Chaos not only traces the split between nature and man to Romantic Culture but finds there, too, a Spinozian vision of man and nature in unity – thereby denying any naturalist/humanist split. This volume is of interest for those who wish to see essays in the holistic approach to culture. Centering on hydraulics, hydrology, and meteorology, this study examines literature, painting, music, economics, and the rhetoric of science, philosophy, and politics, it therewith demonstrates how the water cycle was transformed into a cosmic metaphor that mediated, in the form of several complex adaptive systems, between the chaos of too much change and that of not enough.

Book excerpt: “When it comes to the forensic sciences, nobody can touch Cornwell.” —New York Times Book Review [PLEASE BOX:] CHAOS From the Ancient Greek (χάος or kháos) A vast chasm or void. Anarchy. The science of unpredictability. On a late summer evening in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Dr. Kay Scarpetta and her investigative partner, Pete Marino, respond to a call about a dead bicyclist near the Kennedy School of Government. It appears that a young woman has been attacked with almost superhuman force. Even before Scarpetta’s headquarters has been officially notified about the case, Marino and Scarpetta’s FBI agent husband, Benton Wesley, receive suspicious calls, allegedly from someone at Interpol. But it makes no sense. Why would the elite international police agency know about the case or be interested? It soon becomes apparent that an onslaught of harassment might be the work of an anonymous cyberbully named Tailend Charlie, who has been sending cryptic communications to Scarpetta for over a week. Even Lucy, her brilliant tech-savvy niece, can’t trace who it is or how this person could have access to intimate information. When a second death shocks Scarpetta to her core, it becomes apparent she and those close to her are confronted with something far bigger and more dangerous than they’d ever imagined.
