Book excerpt: William explained that the nave had round-headed arches and had been built by the Normans. "Gee! We have them in the States, you know, at Salt Lake City," Mr Murray remarked to his wife. "Honey, I think those are 'Mormons'. He said 'Normans'." William Simpson has everything he wants in life except a girlfriend. He loves his job, guiding coach tours of France, but he has never forgotten his schooldays and the bullies, prefects and teachers who made his adolescence a misery. One day his boss offers him ten complimentary places on his next tour. Rather than take his friends, William looks up his old enemies, and invites them on a free holiday none of them will ever forget. Remembering their personalities, interests and foibles, William is determined to get his revenge in a very special way! At the same time our hero has to look after a motley group of real holidaymakers, maintain the Entente Cordiale in his dealings with French hoteliers, save his coach driverís marriage and find out if he really is falling in love with his bossís bus-mad secretary - or she with him? As Tour F443/07 wends its way through rural France, William wonders whether any of his victims will recognise him, and whether they will make it back home! While his passengers fill up on vin ordinaire, he discovers new uses for a Norwegian Tourist Board video and an old halfpenny. A hilarious story about romance, money, revenge, cheap wine, bad coffee and an AEC Regent V with Park Royal bodywork.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study argues that neorealism’s visual genius is inseparable from its almost invisible relation to the Fascist past: a connection inscribed in cinematic landscapes. While largely a silent narrative, neorealism’s complex visual processing of two decades of Fascism remains the greatest cultural production in the service of memorialization and comprehension for a nation that had neither a Nuremberg nor a formal process of reconciliation. Through her readings of canonical neorealist films, Minghelli unearths the memorial strata of the neorealist image and investigates the complex historical charge that invests this cinema. This book is both a formal analysis of the new conception of the cinematic image born from a crisis of memory, and a reflection on the relation between cinema and memory. Films discussed include Ossessione (1943) Paisà (1946), Ladri di biciclette (1948), and Cronaca di un amore (1950).

Book excerpt: Demonstrates how film adaptations intersect with feminist discourse in neoliberal Mexico. Adapting Gender offers a cogent introduction to Mexico’s film industry, the history of women’s filmmaking in Mexico, a new approach to adaptation as a potential feminist strategy, and a cultural history of generational changes in Mexico.Ilana Dann Luna examines how adapted films have the potential to subvert not only the intentions of the source text, but how they can also interrupt the hegemony of gender stereotypes in a broader socio-political context. Luna follows the industrial shifts that began with Salinas de Gortari’s presidency, which made the long 1990s the precise moment in which subversive filmmakers, particularly women, were able to participate more fully in the industry and portrayed the lived experiences of women and non-gender-conforming men. The analysis focuses on Busi Cortés’s El secreto de Romelia (1988), an adaptation of Rosario Castellanos’s short novel El viudo Román (1964); Sabina Berman and Isabelle Tardán’s Entre Pancho Villa y una mujer desnuda (1996), an adaptation of Berman’s own play, Entre Villa y una mujer desnuda (1992); Guita Schyfter’s Novia que te vea (1993), an adaptation of Rosa Nissán’s eponymous novel (1992); and Jaime Humberto Hermosillo’s De noche vienes, Esmeralda (1997), an adaptation of Elena Poniatowska’s short story “De noche vienes” (1979). These adapted texts established a significant alternative to monolithic notions of national (gendered) identity, while critiquing, updating, and even queering, notions of feminism in the Mexican context. “Adapting Gender demonstrates Luna’s considerable skills as a scholar. She deftly carries out a careful analysis of the literary and cinematic texts, putting them in the context of the evolving publishing and film industries. Written in a lively and engaging style, this is a unique synthesis of the evolution of feminism and the roles women have had—indeed, at times, been limited to—in Mexico and what this has meant for their creative output.” — Niamh Thornton, author of Revolution and Rebellion in Mexican Film

Book excerpt: The volume assembles fresh treatments on the flâneur in literature, film and culture from a variety of angles. Its individual contributions cover established as well as previously unnoticed textual and filmic source materials in a historical perspective ranging from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first century. The range of topics covered demonstrates the ongoing productivity of flânerie as a viable paradigm for the artistic approach to urban culture and the continuing suitability of flânerie as an analytic category for the scholarly examination of urban representation in the arts. This productiveness also extends to the questioning, re-evaluation, and enhancement of flânerie’s theoretical foundations as they were laid down by Walter Benjamin and others. The work will be particularly relevant for students and scholars of literary studies, film studies and gender studies, as well as for theoretical approaches to flânerie as an important aspect of urban culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is Dave Kehr "one of the best writers on film the country has produced"? Jonathan Rosenbaum, his highly regarded successor as movie critic at the "Chicago Reader" from 1987 through 2008, has a good answer in his Foreword to this volume: "For the range of films and filmmakers treated, the analytical tools employed, and the intellectual confidence and lucidity of his arguments, Kehr's prose really has no parallels." In this "sequel" to "When Movies Mattered" (published in 2011), Kehr deploys those gifts in 50 brilliant pieces, ranging from a thoughtful discussion of the sobering Holocaust documentary "Shoah" to an irresistible celebration of the raucous American comedy "Used Cars." Although that first book featured pieces only from the "Reader," this volume also contains essays from "Chicago" magazine, where Kehr's column on movies appeared from August 1979 through September 1986 (his work in the "Reader" appeared from late 1974 through late summer in 1986). As with "When Movies Mattered," most of this material (and all of it from "Chicago" magazine) has not been reprinted or available online since its original publication. Readers will now have the opportunity to know more of what Rosenbaum calls "a body of work that . . . strikes me as being the most remarkable extended stretch of auteurist [director centered] criticism in American journalism." Although Kehr ended his career as a critic toward the end of 2013 when he stopped writing his weekly DVD column for the "New York Times" to become an adjunct curator in the film department of the Museum of Modern Art, his reputation will be further enhanced by this second collection of his outstanding work--definitely must reading for cinephiles.

Book excerpt: Eye-opening and candid, David Bailey's Look Again is a fantastically entertaining memoir by a true icon. 'Rollicking . . . with roguish tales as vivid as his era-defining photos' – Daily Mail 'Brilliant' – Telegraph David Bailey burst onto the scene in 1960 with his revolutionary photographs for Vogue. Discarding the rigid rules of a previous generation of portrait and fashion photographers, he channelled the energy of London's newly informal street culture into his work. Funny, brutally honest and ferociously talented, he became as famous as his subjects. Now in his eighties, he looks back on an outrageously eventful life. Born into an East End family, his dyslexia saw him written off as stupid at school. He hit a low point working as a debt collector until he discovered a passion for photography that would change everything. The working-class boy became an influential artist. Along the way he became friends with Mick Jagger, hung out with the Krays, got into bed with Andy Warhol and made the Queen laugh. His love-life was never dull. He propelled girlfriend Jean Shrimpton to stardom, while her angry father threatened to shoot him. He married Catherine Deneuve a month after meeting her. Penelope Tree’s mother was unimpressed when he turned up on her doorstep. ‘It could be worse, I could be a Rolling Stone,’ Bailey told her. He went on to marry Marie Helvin and then Catherine Dyer, with whom he has three children. He is also a film and documentary director, has shot numerous commercials and has never stopped working. A born storyteller, his autobiography is a memorable romp through an extraordinary career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francesco Rosi is one of the great realist artists of post-war Italian, indeed post-war world cinema. In this book, author Gaetana Marrone explores the rich visual language in which the Neapolitan filmmaker expresses the cultural icons that constitute his style and images. Over the years, Rosi has offered us films that trace an intricate path between the real and the fictive, the factual and the imagined. His films show an extraordinarily consistent formal balance while representing historical events as social emblems that examine, shape, and reflect the national self. They rely on a labyrinthine narrative structure, in which the sense of an enigma replaces the unidirectional path leading ineluctably to a designated end and solution. Rosi's logical investigations are conducted by an omniscient eye and translated into a cinematic approach that embraces the details of material reality with the panoramic perspective of a dispassionate observer. This book offers intertextual analyses within such fields as history, politics, literature, and photography, along with production information gleaned from Rosi's personal archives and interviews. It examines Rosi's creative use of film as document, and as spectacle). It is also a study of the specific cinematic techniques that characterize Rosi's work and that visually, compositionally, express his vision of history and the elusive "truth" of past and present social and political realities.

Book excerpt: How does coding change the way we think about architecture? This question opens up an important research perspective. In this book, Miro Roman and his AI Alice_ch3n81 develop a playful scenario in which they propose coding as the new literacy of information. They convey knowledge in the form of a project model that links the fields of architecture and information through two interwoven narrative strands in an “infinite flow” of real books. Focusing on the intersection of information technology and architectural formulation, the authors create an evolving intellectual reflection on digital architecture and computer science.

Download or read book Contemporary Japanese Film written by Mark Schilling and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 1999-11-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive look at Japanese cinema in the 1990s includes nearly four hundred reviews of individual films and a dozen interviews and profiles of leading directors and producers. Interpretive essays provide an overview of some of the key issues and themes of the decade, and provide background and context for the treatment of individual films and artists. In Mark Schilling's view, Japanese film is presently in a period of creative ferment, with a lively independent sector challenging the conventions of the industry mainstream. Younger filmmakers are rejecting the stale formulas that have long characterized major studio releases, reaching out to new influences from other media—television, comics, music videos, and even computer games—and from both the West and other Asian cultures. In the process they are creating fresh and exciting films that range from the meditative to the manic, offering hope that Japanese film will not only survive but thrive as it enters the new millennium.
