Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catholic church has been in decline for several decades. Whether one examines the priest sexual abuse crisis, Mass attendance, leadership failures, or the worldwide priest shortage, Dr. Kinkels message is clear: reform is needed. There is a sexual abuse problem and leaders did not deal with it effectively. We find a 'code of silence', missed reform opportunities, and the underlying mismanagement of the chaos. After documenting the cover-up by bishops and others, The Decline of the Catholic Church points out the contradiction: bishops protect the devious priests and the church's reputation versus the need to protect children and prevent molestation in the future. The book developes a very plausible explanation as to how the sex scandal mushroomed in the 1970s and why it is now apparently declining. There is a priest shortage (the church is short 150,000 priests worldwide based on 2002 statistics). Instead of seriously examining data on church problems, bishops attack research analysts who predict what the shortage of priests will look like in 2015, if nothing is done to alleviate the problem. Kinkel suggests that the bishops ordain married deacons to the priesthood when feasible (there are 13,000 currently). Secondly, married men and women should be considered for ordination. Instead the bishops import foreign priests (Chicago's data: 50% of incardinated priests are foreign born) as a stop-gap measure while praising celibacy. There is an organizational problem in the church. The church is run by old men who espouse conservative ideologies that fail to address modern problems. The book compares global retirement trends in corporations versus church practice and finds that the Catholic church is about 15 years out of sync. They must retire church leaders earlier, and have term limits for bishops and popes. There is a need for regular general councils which have historical precedence. This is so because the present power structure of the pope and curia makes too many mistakes, e.g., birth control, bishops' cover-up of sex abuse, Banco Ambrosiano scandal which cost all parties millions, 10 years to agree on English translation for scripture readings at Mass, etc. Regular calling of councils can shake up this lazy monopoly. Lastly, Kinkel gives the most comprehensive analysis of the priest shortage in the U. S. and why this is the most serious problem the church faces, not the sex abuse crisis. The church is in the antechamber of Reformation II. Catholics are losing faith.

George Rutler addresses our current causes of anxiety and our never-changing, ever-new reasons for hope. His writings on the issues of our day are neither pessimistic nor optimistic, because they are infused with the confidence that God grants us his peace and no earthly circumstance can take it away. With insight and wit, with breadth and depth, Fr. Rutler comments on the confusion in the Church and the chaos in Western societies, which are not without precedent but are on a uniquely global scale. An underlying theme is his dismay at the lack of historical perspective. He says that the gremlin that haunts our times is ignorance and a failure to recall and to understand the trials of the past.

Book excerpt: Being a Catholic means being merciful, 'the willingness to enter into the chaos of another.' This book explores the seven corporal and seven spiritual works of mercy and considers how we invoke mercy both in the church in the Eucharistic liturgy and in our homes, with family and friends. Interspersed are three meditations on mercy: on September 11, on being a priest in light of the scandal in Boston, on the world of HIV/AIDS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2018 Catholic Press Association Award: Popular Presentation of the Catholic Faith. (First Place). With atheism on the rise and millions tossing off religion, why would anyone consider the Catholic Church? Brandon Vogt, a bestselling author and the content director for Bishop Robert Barron’s Word on Fire Catholic Ministries, shares his passionate search for truth, a journey that culminated in the realization that Catholicism was right about a lot of things, maybe even everything. His persuasive case for the faith reveals a vision of Catholicism that has answers our world desperately needs and reminds those already in the Church what they love about it. A 2016 study by the Public Religion Research Institute found that 25 percent of adults (39 percent of young adults) describe themselves as unaffiliated with any religion. Millions of these so-called “nones” have fled organized religion and many more have rejected God altogether. Brandon Vogt was one of those nones. When he converted to Catholicism in college, he knew how confusing that decision was to many of his friends and family. But he also knew that the evidence he discovered pointed to one conclusion: Catholicism is true. To his delight, he discovered it was also exceedingly good and beautiful. Why I Am Catholic traces Vogt’s spiritual journey, making a refreshing, twenty-first century case for the faith and answering questions being asked by agnostics, nones, and atheists, the audience for his popular website, StrangeNotions.com, where Catholics and atheists dialogue. With references to Catholic thinkers such as G. K. Chesterton, Ven. Fulton Sheen, St. Teresa of Calcutta, and Bishop Robert Barron, Vogt draws together lines of evidence to help seekers discover why they should be Catholic as an alternative. Why I Am Catholic serves as a compelling reproposal of the Church for former Catholics, a persuasive argument for truth and beauty to those who have become jaded and disenchanted with religion, and at the same time offers practicing Catholics a much-needed dose of confidence and clarity to affirm their faith against an increasingly skeptical culture.

Book excerpt: Using primarily non-Catholic sources, O'Hare details assiduously the historic facts about Luther, his teachings, and the ever-splintering, disunited Protestant world he fathered. The real Luther is exposed through his writings, sermons, and letters, along with the testimony of his pupils, close friends, contemporaries, and Protestant biographers. Most of the common beliefs about Luther are blown away, revealed convincingly as myths made of the sands of romanticism and propaganda.

Book excerpt: Winner of a 2019 Association of Catholic Publishers Award: Teen Books (First Place). How well do you know Jesus? Like, REALLY know him? Catholic author and speaker Katie Prejean McGrady shares sometimes embarrassing, often humorous, and always inspiring stories about how she came to know and love Jesus and how you can, too, through prayer, scripture, sacraments, and service. In the summer of 2016, Katie Prejean McGrady walked off the stage feeling great about a forty-five-minute talk she had just given, when a young man from the audience stopped her for advice. His questions caught her completely off guard. "Who is Jesus?" "How can I get to know him?" Prejean McGrady--who speaks to tens of thousands of Catholic teens and young adults a year about her passion for Jesus--couldn't give the guy a straightforward answer. And it bugged her. Bigtime. In Follow, she uses engaging, sometimes awkward, and frequently funny stories from her own life to show you four simple and practical steps to get to know Jesus and have life-changing friendship with him: Prayer (lift your heart)--She helps you understand that prayer is just talking to God and gives you the tools to start. Scripture (open your ears)--Prejean McGrady introduces you to an easier way to start reading the Bible. Sacraments (receive God's grace)--She encourages you to see the sacraments as spiritual fuel for your relationship with Jesus. Service (share the gift)--She will nudge you beyond your comfort zone in the Church's common mission to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world. Prejean McGrady will help you open your heart and mind to meeting Jesus in a personal way and challenge you to see him for who he really is.

Book excerpt: Written for readers deeply concerned for the future of the church, this book seeks to answer two questions: Why is the culture of the Catholic Church, despite Vatican II's emphasis on collegiality and transparency, still prone to covering up abuses of power? How can this culture change in order to move forward? A timely book on the sex abuse crisis by a scholar who is adept at weaving insights from the social sciences into a framework of practical theology.

Theories are conceived, as it were, over night; long-established customs are abandoned; doctrines of unquestionable authenticity are ruthlessly overthrown,- in a word, chaos reigns in the world of thought and deed. But one institution retains the stability of centuries; and men and women of judgment hopefully turn their eyes to her, the one whom ages and changes have not altered-the Roman Catholic Church. It is with the hope that this book may aid Catholics to remain faithful to the Church and stand by her in these difficult times, and that it may be the means of attracting the many, who are sincere in their efforts to find a trustworthy guide through the maze of beliefs and unbeliefs, to a more thorough investigation of the 'Catholic Church, that it is given to press.”In the chapter on the Church as a Sign of Contradiction, the author writes: “Simeon, the seer, some nineteen hundred years ago took a little infant in his arms and made the remarkable statement, "Behold this child is set for the fall and resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted," a bystander might have ridiculed the thought that the child of apparently unknown parents could ever rise to such heights as to be the occasion of the success and failure, the rise and fall of individuals as well as of nations. And yet this Child, the Son of God, has been a sign of contradiction, and has exerted a tremendous influence upon the nations of the world and their destinies.”
