Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of channel catfish farming in the United States serves as a model for the development of pond-based aquaculture industries worldwide. Channel catfish farming is the largest and economically most important aquaculture industry in the United States. In 2003, over 300,000 metric tons (662 million pounds) of channel catfish were processed, representing about half the total United States aquaculture production. Demand for farm-raised catfish is strong, with record processing years in 2002 and 2003. In 22 chapters written by active scientists in the field, Biology and Culture of Channel Catfish comprehensively synthesizes over 30 years of research on this American icon. Throughout the book, fundamental biological aspects of channel catfish are linked to practical culture techniques. Topics include: • Latest information on reproductive physiology, genetics, and breeding • Comprehensive treatment of catfish nutrition, feeds, and feeding practices • Water quality management and pond dynamics • In-depth review of immunology in channel catfish • Practical information on diseases and health management • Techniques for commercial culture, including innovative techniques such as raceways, recirculating systems, and partitioned aquaculture systems • Catfish economics and marketing • Exploration of environmental concerns, including recommended Best Management Practices

Even so, intensive catfish rearing ventures are yielding modest to sizeable secondary incomes in Southern and Central States where pond temperatures are 70 degrees F or higher at least 4 months during the year. In most cases, fingerlings are purchased from commercial breeders, because catfish propagation requires elaborate facilities and considerable time.

Book excerpt: The commercial culture of channel catfish in the south eastern part of the United States has grown at such an amazing rate in the last decade that more research efforts have been introduced to meet the need for additional technology. Although some of this research has been summarized within particular disciplines, there is no comprehensive treatise available that provides an overall summary of the current information available on the culture of this fish. This book has been written to try and cater for this need. However although researchers and commercial catfish producers will find much practical information in it, it is not intended to be only a fish culture manual. The material presented deals primarily with culture as practiced in the south eastern United States, but the principles should apply wherever this species is cultured.

Book excerpt: Symptoms were identified in channel catfish fed diets deficient in the water-soluble vitamins pyridoxine, pantothenic acid. riboflavin, thiamine, folic acid, nicotinic acid, B-12, or Choline. Fat-soluble vitamin A and vitamin K deficiency systems were observed after feeding diets which contained beta-carotene and 4.0 milligrams of menadione (synthetic vitamin K) per 100 grams of food (dry weight). These deficiencies were eliminated by substituting vitamin A palmitate for beta-carotene and doubling the content of menadione. No dietary need was observed for the water-soluble vitamins biotin, inositol, ascorbic acid, and para-aminobenzoic acid.

Book excerpt: This volume is a compilation of the papers presented at a meeting that took place in April 1980 at the Mote Marine Laboratory, Sarasota, Florida. The meeting and this volume are outgrowths of two earlier international meetings on marine bio-acoustics that occurred in 1963 and 1966 (Tavolga 1964, 1967). The first meeting took place at the Lerner Marine Laboratory of the American Museum of Natural History, while the second meeting was at the American Museum itself, and was under the sponsorship of the Department of Animal Behavior. It is apparent that these two volumes have had immense impact on the current study of marine bio-acoustics, and particularly on fish audition. In a preliminary conference in Sarasota in 1979 we decided that it was time for another such meeting, to bring together as many as possible of the investigators interested in fish acoustics in order to assess the current state of our knowledge and predict directions for research for the next several years. Such a meeting appeared par ticularly timely, since over the past four or five years there have been many new studies that have provided new empirical and theoretical work on basic mechanisms of fish audition. Furthermore, it became evident, as we made up preliminary lists of possible participants, that few of the currently active workers were in the field back in 1966. In fact, of the current participants, only Drs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although catfish have been farmed for about 30 years and catfish farm ing is the most successful aquacultural enterprise in the United States, there are those who contend that catfish farming is still as much of an "art" as it is a science. This position is difficult to refute completely, particularly considering that some practices used in catfish farming ap pear to have little scientific basis. Skill coupled with a small dose of mysticism certainly playa role in the culture of catfish, and the catfish producer is faced with the unenviable task of rearing an animal in an environment that requires considerable management. Certain aspects may still be an "art" because research and technical information needed to support the industry have lagged behind industry growth; however, the basic principles underlying catfish farming are based on sound scientific evidence whose foundation was laid in the 1950s by work conducted at state and federal fish hatcheries in the southeastern and midwestern United States. Since that time, several university and government laboratories have expanded the scientific base for catfish farming. As a result, considerable information is available, but it is gen erally fragmented and exists in a multitude of diverse scientific and trade journals. The material is often too technical or abstract to be com prehensible to fish culturists and personnel in allied industries. This book fits the definition of the term handbook in the sense that it is intended as a book of instruction or guidance as well as a reference.

Book excerpt: I've fished for channel catfish my whole life, starting when I was a small child with my father. Ever since, this hobby has remained dear to my heart. We catfishermen understand the rush of emotion, the anxiety that comes with the first hit, and the patience it takes to bring in a deserving catch. Some, however, may find the struggle to catch catfish too over-whelming. I will not promise this book will provide all of the answers one wishes to have, but I promise to provide an adequate amount of information to help the beginner build a usable knowledge base. We all have to start somewhere and I'm providing that "somewhere." ""Catfishing: A Beginners Guide to Catching Channel Catfish"" will inform the reader on the identification of a channel catfish, the proper gear and bait to use, and much more. I hope you enjoy this collection of information and I hope it proves useful in your efforts!
