Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Production in War and Peace Pacific Coast States the decline in the relative importance of farm produced power amounted to 82 percent while in the South Atlantic States the drop was only 48 percent. Thus, by farm - produced power had decreased in importance every where but was still an important item of production in the three Southern divisions where it represented on the average from 9 to 116 percent of gross farm production. These regional decreases are closely associated with increases in farm output for human use. The general trend in crop and pasture production in the United States follows closely the trend of total gross farm production. Annually, there is considerable more fluctuation in the crop index than there is in the total gross production index, because ofthe unstabilizing effect of weather on crop and pasture production (fig. National crop and pasture production was only about 10 percent larger in 1959 than it was 20 years earlier, but in the fifth year of the war, 1944, it was 17 percent greater than in prewar 1959. Increases in crop production per acre of cropland with practically no change in the cropland base, particularly since the drought and acreage adjustment period 1955 - 56, has been the dominant factor in the crop produc tion picture in the United States. Total cropland acreage in the United States has remained virtually unchanged since 1919. The flat trend in national cropland acreage resulted from compensating changes in the cropland base in the various geographic divisions (fig. During the l920's the trend in total cropland acreage was downward in the New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, South Atlantic, and East South Central divisions But the total increase in the cropland base in the West North Central, West South Central, and Mountain divisions matched the total decrease in the former divisions. Cropland acreage in the Pacific division had a relatively flat trend during the period. Thus the 1920's following World War I witnessed a decline in cropland acreage in the East and an increase in the West, with the national total remaining practical ly constant. During World War II considerable increases in cropland acreages have occurred only in the Mountain and Pacific Coast groups of States, but these were largely offset by decreases in the South. (2) Ah improvement in the efficiency of the average dairy cow appears likely, not only because of continued culling of inferior animals and more effective disease control, but also because of a rapidly expanding artificial-breeding program. Most of the improve 'ments from.the widespread use of improved sires, made possible by arti ficial breeding, are still to be achieved, and over a longer period it is possible that productive capacity will be increased by cross breeding. (3) Further mechanization provides a basis for increased operating effi cisney of the dairy enterprise. Shifts in the urban population, accompanying the probable future growth of industry in the South and West, may bring about changes in the regional pattern of milk production for fluid use. The book charts the rise of the peace cause from its sources in the works of William Penn and John Woolman, through the founding of the first peace societies in 1815 and the mid-century peace congresses, to the postbellum movement's consequential emphasis on arbitration. The Civil War is the central axis for the book, with three chapters organized around readings of novels by James Fenimore Cooper, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Nathaniel Hawthorne spanning the period from 1840 to 1865. Cooper had personal connections to the movement and thought deeply about the issues it addressed. Literary interest in peace at times overlapped with abolitionism, as was true for Stowe. And, in the case of Hawthorne, attention to peace advocacy arose out of a mixture of skepticism regarding perfectionist impulses, a desire to explore the nature and limits of violence, and fear of civil conflict. The volume also explores fiction engaged with problems that arose in the aftermath of that war, including novels by Henry Adams and John Hay on political corruption and class conflict; works on the failures of Reconstruction by Albion Tourgée and Charles Chesnutt; and the varied treatments of Indigenous experience in Helen Hunt Jackson's Ramona and Simon Pokagon's Queen of the Woods. All of these writers focused on issues related to the cause of peace, expanding its thematic reach and anticipating key insights of twentieth-century peace scholars.

What had been an institution of community members and local elites passed to town, then state, and finally federal government. During the same period, Wakefield evolved from an agrarian town to a manufacturing town and finally to a bedroom suburb, ending the practice of a handful of local elites ruling the town unchallenged. Though the rise of the National Guard was generally positive, for some militia companies, inclusion in the National Guard weakened vital bonds with their communities. In the 19th century, the Richardson Light Guard thrived under generous patrons, a supportive town, and a relatively wealthy state government. After becoming part of the National Guard in 1916, the links with its home community steadily weakened, finally breaking during World War II. After the war, the National Guard company had few links to Wakefield and was reorganized out of existence in 1975.
