Though they represent only 13 percent of the total commercial softwood sawtimber volume in the West, these species approximate 25 percent of the softwood sawtimber in California. In the central Sierras of California, nearly 50 per cent of the sawtimber is made up of red and white fir. In 1967, approximately 2 billion board feet of true fir lumber was produced; of this amount, nearly half was produced in California.
