Book excerpt: After directing the organization NGOabroad: International Careers and Volunteering for 20 years, the author wrote this guidebook to help both prospective and active social and humanitarian workers pursue their careers in international development. She has witnessed many individuals miss international job opportunities because they lack knowledge of the realities on the ground or the requisite skills. This practical book fills in the gaps. Chapters detail the common problems of global poverty and injustice and instruct on community-building as a means of creating lasting change. The book is designed for those who wish to work or volunteer abroad in nursing, public health, engineering, education, entrepreneurship, environmental work, women's empowerment and other fields.

Book excerpt: Are you a changemaker? Many people are drawn to make positive change in the world, but feel daunted by the legends of iconic activists like Mother Teresa or Nelson Mandela. By considering how everyday people make a difference in their own communities or workplaces, we can find an approach that is relatable and attainable. Based on research and interviews with nearly fifty people devoted to making a positive difference, this book explores the mindsets that everyday changemakers have in common: how they perceive themselves, how they relate to others, and how they are oriented to action. Straight forward, accessible, and digestible, this book provides readers with helpful guidance and tips, inspiring words from the changemakers themselves, and reflective questions designed to spur insights and action. This book offers bright spots, helps new changemakers start small or go big, and encourages stalled changemakers to get their spark back and keep going. Most importantly, it reminds us that everyday people can make an extraordinary difference in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scholar and activist tells the story of change makers operating within the Chinese Communist system, whose ideas of social action necessarily differ from those dominant in Western, liberal societies. The Chinese government has increased digital censorship under Xi Jinping. Why? Because online activism works; it is perceived as a threat in halls of power. In The Other Digital China, Jing Wang, a scholar at MIT and an activist in China, shatters the view that citizens of nonliberal societies are either brainwashed or complicit, either imprisoned for speaking out or paralyzed by fear. Instead, Wang shows the impact of a less confrontational kind of activism. Whereas Westerners tend to equate action with open criticism and street revolutions, Chinese activists are building an invisible and quiet coalition to bring incremental progress to their society. Many Chinese change makers practice nonconfrontational activism. They prefer to walk around obstacles rather than break through them, tactfully navigating between what is lawful and what is illegitimate. The Other Digital China describes this massive gray zone where NGOs, digital entrepreneurs, university students, IT companies like Tencent and Sina, and tech communities operate. They study the policy winds in Beijing, devising ways to press their case without antagonizing a regime where taboo terms fluctuate at different moments. What emerges is an ever-expanding networked activism on a grand scale. Under extreme ideological constraints, the majority of Chinese activists opt for neither revolution nor inertia. They share a mentality common in China: rules are meant to be bent, if not resisted.

Book excerpt: This book describes how a program of values deliberations–-sustained group reflections on local values, aspirations, beliefs and experiences, blending with discussions of how to understand and to realize human rights--led to individual and collective empowerment in communities in rural Senegal. The study explains what happens during the deliberations and shows how they bring about a larger process that results in improved capabilities in areas such as education, health, child protection, and gender equality. It shows how participants, particularly women, enhance their agency, including their individual and collective capacities to play public roles and kindle community action. It thus provides important insights on how values deliberations help to revise adverse gender norms.
