It aims to confirm or reject the thesis that despite significant changes in attitudes and depictions from early literary works to contemporary revisionist attempts, certain myths and plot elements persist. The paper includes a preliminary consideration of the mythicization of the American West and its reflection in popular culture, particularly film. It culminates in an analysis of two Western genre films, John Ford’s "Stagecoach" (1939) and Tommy Lee Jones’ "The Homesman" (2014), to evaluate whether enduring genre conventions and myths about Native Americans remain prevalent. Diese Lektürearbeit untersucht die Mythen und Realitäten in der Darstellung des amerikanischen Westens in der Populärkultur, mit einem besonderen Fokus auf die Repräsentation der indigenen Völker. Ziel ist es, die These zu bestätigen oder zu widerlegen, dass trotz signifikanter Veränderungen in den Einstellungen und Darstellungen von frühen literarischen Werken bis hin zu zeitgenössischen revisionistischen Ansätzen bestimmte Mythen und Handlungselemente weiterhin bestehen. Book excerpt: Conventional literary representations of Western American history repress the violent conquest central to U.S. westward expansion through images of open space, autonomous individualism, and masculine heroism. In particular, the genre of autobiography has traditionally reproduced autonomous, transcendent, and masculinist notions of selfhood. This book analyzes New Western autobiographical narratives that contest such colonial understandings of race, gender, and landscape. Through a comparative analysis of memoirs and multiform narratives by diverse Euro-American, Native American, and Chicana writers, this study explores the ways in which "New Western" writing both reproduces and transforms conventional representations of the American West. Through the lens of narrative form, this book closely analyzes contemporary texts that express contradictory historical visions and notions of selfhood, even as they push the boundaries of autobiography. The book's introduction provides a theoretical and historical overview of Western American historiography and literary representations. The book is then divided into four chapters, three of which compare contradictory visions of Western identity in texts by diverse Euro-American and Native American authors from the late twentieth century. The fourth chapter focuses on these issues in the work of a popular Chicana author. Drawing upon a wide array of methodologies and perspectives, Narrating the American West offers valuable insights to students and scholars in a variety of fields, including postcolonial theory, ecocriticism, the New Western History, Native American Studies, American Studies, gender studies, and autobiography theory.

Book excerpt: Ever since the first interactions between Europeans and Native Americans, the "West" has served as a site of complex geographical, social and cultural transformation. American literature is defined, in part, by the central symbols derived from these points of contact. By the end of the nineteenth century, the Western frontier was declared "closed," a demise solidified by Frederick Jackson Turner's influential essay "The Significance of the Frontier in American History (1893). At the same time, "naturalism" was popularized by the writings of Frank Norris, Stephen Crane, Jack London, Willa Cather, and the photographs of Edward Curtis. Though very different artists, they were united by their common attraction to the mythic American West. As she investigates the interactions of representations of the West, Lawlor effortlessly melds literary studies, American studies, and history. She traces the cultural conception of the American West through its incarnations in the "westernism" of Daniel Boone and James Fenimore Cooper and the romanticism of the expansive frontier they helped formulate. Simultaneously, however, the influence of evolutionism and the styles of French naturalism began to challenge this romantic idiom. This naturalistic discourse constructed the West as a strictly material place, picturing a limited and often limiting geography that portrayed regional identity as the product of material "forces" rather than of individualistic enterprise. With subtle, probing language, Lawlor explains how literary and artistic devices helped shape the idea of the American West and the changing landscape of the continent at the turn of the last century.

Here, it will be argued that the shifting policies on Native Americans are reflected in their representation in the cinematic productions of "The last of the Mohicans". A diachronic analysis will help to filter out both changes and consistencies of the popular perspective on American Indians in film throughout the last century. In order to do so, four filmic versions of "The last of the Mohicans" will be examined: the 1920 silent movie, the 1936, the 1977, as well as the 1992 release. Analyzing representational tools, their functions, and the preferred reading within each movie – as coined by Stuart Hall – and a comparison between the movies will constitute the theoretical approach and will help to pinpoint ideological functions and the role of policy at the time of each of the adaptions. The focus of scene analysis will be on the depiction of violence on the one hand, and on relationship dynamics between Native Americans and Whites on the other hand.

This research looks at how such ideas inform the construction of identity of white males from historic experiences with Native Americans.
