Book excerpt: The emergent powers of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) are drawing attention as they change the political and economic map of the 21st century. But does each country have the institutional framework needed to advance its path of development and to effectively address needed reforms with sustainable solutions? With the support of an international network of experts, the Bertelsmann Stiftung has conducted an indicator-based inventory of the state and performance of governance in each BRICS country. Focusing on success factors and policy challenges, this study draws upon the analytic tool of the Sustainable Governance Indicators (SGI), allowing for a cross-national analysis of the need for reform in core policy areas such as economic and social affairs, environmental policies and innovation strategies. At the same time, the capacities of each country's system of governance are explored in each BRICS state. explores the the extent to which problems are identified and strategic solutions implemented in each of the five political systems. By looking at both reform needs and reform capacities, this study points to considerable differences in the prospects for development in each country - prospects which, in some cases, fall short of the expected growth and progress.

Book excerpt: Change happens all the time, so why is driving particular change generally so hard? Why are the outcomes often unpredictable? Are some types of change easier to achieve than others? Are some techniques for achieving change more effective than others? How can change that is already in train be stopped or deflected? Knowledge about change is fragmented and there is nowhere in the academic or practice worlds that provides comprehensive answers to these and other questions. Every discipline and practice area has only a partial view and there is not even a map of those different perspectives. The purpose of this book is to begin the task of developing a comprehensive approach to change by gathering a variety of viewpoints from the academic and practice worlds.

Pastors and church leaders can either embrace change to their benefit, or they can ignore it and watch as their church slowly becomes irrelevant. Pastors and church leaders have long needed a practical guide on how to recognize the need for change, how to plan for change, how to implement change, and how to sustain change. A Practical Guide for Successful Church Change provides just this. Pastors and church leaders will learn principles for recognizing, planning, implementing, and sustaining change. They will also learn how to cope with resistance, prepare personally for change, and effectively communicate the need for change to the church. Those who are thinking of leading change in the church will find this book exceedingly practical and useful as they seek to transform their church and ministry into a more vibrant body of believers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constant change is a given for most companies today. What differs is the scale, and the ability of people and organizations to deal with change in a positive, learning environment. Training must adapt too, to respond to the different learning styles of a new generation whose learning needs are the result of working in delayered, leaner, empowered organizations. Griffiths and Williams look at the implications for training and development, drawing on their first-hand experience of being with IBM during an extensive reengineering programme. With the aid of checklists, questions, summaries, 'food for thought' and numerous real-life examples, they show how to improve corporate performance through organized learning. The book underlines the vital importance of linking learning with business needs and evaluating it like any other investment.

It provides a comprehensive guide to improving workplace efficiency, understanding key business concepts, and achieving success through change management and corporate social responsibility. It is a valuable resource for scholars, students and educators, and corporate executives. Corporate Consciousness looks at corporations overall, rather than focusing on a few business entities, which allows for a broader, deeper and philosophical, yet practical, understanding of business and the business sector, particularly the fundamentals of corporate culture. In effect, Corporate Consciousness explains how successes and failures can be identified, as well as how they can be managed in line with what a business aims to achieve.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the European Union (EU)'s contribution to the development of the global climate regime within the broader framework of global justice. It argues that the procedural dimension of justice has been largely overlooked so far in the assessment of EU climate policy and reveals that the EU has significantly contributed to the development of the climate regime within its broader efforts to ‘solidarise’ international society. At the same time, the book identifies deficits of the climate regime and limits to the EU’s impact, and explains why the EU policy towards global climate change has shifted over time. Finally, it argues that these policies should not be assessed in terms of being wholly positive or wholly negative, but that they are shot through with ambiguities. This book will be of key interest to scholars, students, and practitioners of climate change, climate politics, and environmental and climate justice studies, and more broadly to EU Studies and International Relations.

This study examines the history and context of the principle, and its applications to law, governmental policies, business and investment, scientific research and international relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strategy and Tactics of Pricing explains how to manage markets strategically and how to grow more profitably. Rather than calculating prices to cover costs or achieve sales goals, students will learn to make strategic pricing decisions that proactively manage customer perceptions of value, motivate purchasing decisions, and shift demand curves. This edition features a new discussion on harnessing concepts from behavioral economics as well as a more streamlined "value cascade" structure to the topics. Readers will also benefit from: Major revisions to almost half of the chapters, including an expanded discussion of big data analytics and a revised chapter on "Specialized Strategies", which addresses timely technical issues like foreign exchange risks, reactions to market slumps, and managing transfer prices between independent profit centers. A completely rewritten chapter on "Creating a Strategic Pricing Capability", which shows readers how to implement the principles of value-based, strategic pricing successfully in their organizations. In-chapter textboxes, updated to provide walk-through examples of current pricing challenges, revenue models enabled by an increasingly digital economy, and advances in buyer decision-making, explained through classic principles that still apply today. Chapter summaries and visual aids, which help readers grasp the theoretical frameworks and actionable principles of pricing analysis. This comprehensive, managerially-focused text is a must-read for students and professionals with an interest in strategic marketing and pricing. A companion website features PowerPoint slides and an instructor’s manual, including exercises, mini-cases, and examination questions.

Book excerpt: In this IBM® Redbooks® publication we describe a centralized reporting and alerting system for governmental social service organizations. We include information about how to integrate key IBM building blocks to bring social services data sources together into an effective structure that allows for reporting on key metrics required by higher levels of government to help secure funding for reporting on the effectiveness of the various social service programs, and to give case workers and care providers quick and easy access to all the services ever provided to a person and their family, which can aid in the reduction of duplicate persons, and therefore, payments, in addition to reducing fraud and abuse of social services funds. The target customers for this solution are state or county social service organizations responsible for services, such as these: Caring for the welfare of children Caring for the adult and aging Getting people back to work who have fallen on hard times The intent of this book is to provide information to help with building your own similar system. We have also included an appendix containing information about the IBM Government Industry Framework and services for additional guidance and use.
