Book excerpt: An extraordinary detailed manual on statecraft and the science of living by one of classical India's greatest minds; Kautilya; also known as Chanakya and Vishnugupta; wrote the Arthashastra not later than 150 AD though the date has not been conclusively established. Legend has it that he was either a Brahmin from Kerala or from north India; however; it is certain that Kautilya was the man who destroyed the Nanda dynasty and installed Chandragupta Maurya as the King of Magadha. A master strategist who was well-versed in the Vedas and adept at creating intrigues and devising political stratagems; Kautilya's genius is reflected in his Arthashastra which is the most comprehensive treatise of statecraft of classical times. The text contains fifteen books which cover numerous topics viz.; the King; a complete code of law; foreign policy; secret and occult practices and so on. The Arthashastra is written mainly in prose but also incorporates 380 shlokas. Artha; literally wealth; is one of four supreme aims prescribed by Hindu tradition. However; it has a much wider significance and the material well-being of individuals is just a part of it. In accordance with this; Kautilya's Arthashastra maintains that the state or government of a country has a vital role to play in maintaining the material status of both the nation and its people. Therefore; a significant part of the Arthashastra has to do with the science of economics. When it deals with the science of politics; the Arthashastra describes in detail the art of government in its widest sense—the maintenance of law and order as also of an efficient administrative machinery.

Thus this quartet of books begins with a 'maximum' and ends with one, all of which were written in 1993, and thus demonstrate a stylistic and thematic continuity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chanakya's numerous sayings on life and living — popularized in the wake of his successful strategy to put Chandragupta Maurya on the throne, if legend is to be believed — have been compiled in numerous collections and anthologies over time. This entire corpus was referred to as Chanakya Niti. These aphorisms, which continue to be recalled and quoted in many parts of India, primarily deal with everyday living: with family and social surroundings, friends and enemies, wealth and knowledge, and the inevitable end of everything. They also advise on the good and bad in life, proper and improper conduct, and how to manage many difficult situations. A.N.D. Haksar's wonderful translation also places this work into context, showing how these verses have endured in the popular imagination for so long.

Book excerpt: The introduction of Muslim influence through Spain is the one instance in which we seem to get an alien culture entering into this Roman tradition and exercising a disturbing influence. In fact, this Muslim culture was at bottom essentially a part of the Hellenistic-Roman material, even the theology of Islam being formulated and developed from Hellenistic sources, but Islam had so long lived apart from Christendom and its development had taken place in surroundings so different that it seems a strange and alien thing. Its greatest power lay in the fact that it presented the old material in an entirely fresh form.

Book excerpt: A chance meeting with a former US Army Special Forces officer AKA Candyman in war-torn Kabul sets Shiv, a disillusioned civil engineer, from the comforts of Mumbai on a journey to find his inner peace. The craggy peaks and troughs of the Karakoram Range echo the ups and downs of Shiv’s life as he seeks answers to questions of life, destiny and happiness. In a way, Shiv’s travails are no different from that of millions of others seeking answers to the apparent unfairness in life’s distribution of bounties and miseries. Keeping him company in this quest is Nasir, a dour-faced Pashtun, who struggles with his own torments as he despairs at the caprices of fate. But what is a former US army officer doing amidst the ruins of Kabul living in a tent house, and why does the American go by the moniker “Candyman”? The answer to this innocuous question hides in itself the purpose of life we seek and how and why happiness eludes most, despite religion, religious structures, gods and godmen and most important of all… why God won’t help! Or will He?

What is the "Game" and how do you learn to play? Take a journey through the hidden knowledge and wisdom that many consider priceless. The Game is an anomaly; it is often spoken about but never defined. It has been that way for centuries, and for a good reason. I talk a lot about the Game and I realize that the majority of people have no idea what I'm talking about. It's time to change that. This is what I call the, "Little Black Book." This book breaks down in detail what the Game is, how it works and how you can use it to improve every area of your life. The reason is because when the Game is used unethically it can cause people to do things that are not in their best interest. The Game itself is a system of knowledge, changing your perspective on situations and altering your standards. The foundation of the Game is empowerment through brutal honesty and self-reflection. These principles, if you honestly apply them, will change your life. Trivial matters which worried you before will no longer be of consequence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last and most powerful book written by the founder of the American Nazi Party, George Lincoln Rockwell. Taking the philosophical concepts outlined in his earlier book, "This Time the World," Rockwell distilled his political message into a hard-hitting, easy-to-read volume which is guaranteed to leave the reader shaken, despite having first been published in 1966.In 1958, alone and without funds, he hung up the Swastika and founded the first openly National Socialist organization anywhere in the world after the end of the Second World War. Using dramatic street tactics, uniforms and planned publicity stunts, Rockwell soon attracted worldwide attention and a small band of followers across America.Rockwell's high-point came with a 3,000-strong rally at Marquette Park in Chicago in August 1966. Just as Rockwell seemed to pose a credible political threat, he was assassinated in August 1967, just a few months after this book was first published.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a vivid description of Chanakya's doctrines, as written in his famous book, Arthashastra. The entire content has been taken from the original book but simplified and explained in an easy language for the common man. There are 17 chapters in the book containing the true essence of an ideal administrative system, the duties and responsibilities of an able ruler, how to become an efficient ruler, how to govern, the basic principles of a good government, how to strengthen the political and physical boundaries of a kingdom/government, how to increase the wealth of a kingdom/government or improve its economy and bring forth prosperity, which is relevant even today for good governance. There are also salient and interesting incidents from Chanakya's life along with attractive illustrations to make the book all the more eye-catching and reader-friendly. The best part of the book is that the author has beautifully tried to connect and relate the various philosophies of Kautilya with our daily life activities, problems and situations. So readers, just don't miss reading the book!

Book excerpt: In This Book S.N. Mital Examines In Detail And Refutes The Views Held By Many Scholars That The Text Of Kautiliya Arthasastra Was Not Written By A Single Author And That The Date Of Its Composition Cannot Be Attributed To A Single Century. The Book Has Been Primarily Written As A Reply To T.R. Trautmann'S Kautilya And The Arthasastra, In Which He Tried To Prove, With The Help Of Statistics, That The Arthasastra Was A Compilation Of Writings By Three Or Four Authors, Edited By Kautilya. This View Was Based On An Analysis Of The Frequency Of The Use Of Ca (And) And Va (Or) In Different Portions Of The Arthasastra. Trautmann Also Seems To Have Used This Argument To Maintain That The Arthasastra Was Composed Sometime After The Second Century. Mital Tries To Show, Through His Own Collection Of Statistics, That Trautmann'S Thesis Is Misconceived And That Va Was More Frequently Used In Those Portions Of The Text Where The Subject Treated Is Primarily Political, And Ca Was More Frequently Used Where The Discussion Is Primarily Theoretical, And So This Difference In The Frequency Of Use Of Va And Ca Does Not Indicate Different Authors. Mital Asserts That The Arthasastra Was Written By Kautilya In The Fourth Century Bc, As Is Generally Supposed, And Not In The Third Century Ad, A View Propounded By Some Western As Also Some Indian Scholars Who Wrote In The 1920S And 1930S.
