Book excerpt: Since becoming the Nebraska women's volleyball coach in 2000, John Cook has led the team to four national championships, seven NCAA semifinal appearances, and the nation's top winning percentage in women's volleyball. In Dream Like a Champion Cook shares the coaching and leadership philosophy that has enabled him to become one of the game's winningest coaches. Growing up in San Diego, Cook acquired his coaching philosophy from his experiences first as a football coach, then as a student of the sport of volleyball on the beaches of Southern California. After a stint as an assistant volleyball coach at Nebraska, he returned to Nebraska as head coach in 2000 and won the national championship in his first season. Even with a bar set so high, Cook saw at Nebraska's tradition-rich program the potential for even greater growth and success. He decided to focus on higher expectations, training, motivation, goal setting, and other ways to build the strongest teams possible. In Dream Like a Champion Cook shares the philosophy behind Nebraska's culture of success and reveals how he's had to learn, evolve, and be coached himself, even in his fifth decade as a coach. With openness and candor he delivers insights about his methods and passes along lessons that can be used by leaders in any field. Cook also shares behind-the-scenes anecdotes about Nebraska volleyball moments and players--and how he coaches and teaches his players about life beyond the court.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leadership and learning expert shows you how to change your behavior, develop soft skills, and achieve personal and professional growth through a series of small experiments she calls “Flexing.” A personnel shift at your organization puts you into a leadership role you don't feel prepared for. Your boss tells you that you seem aloof and unapproachable in client meetings. You need to win the support of the members of a local community group for a project you feel passionate about. Addressing these diverse issues depends on improving your soft skills—such as time management, team building, communication and listening, creative thinking, and problem-solving. But this isn’t as easy as it may seem. Sue Ashford, the chair of the Management and Organizations group at the Ross School of Business, has the solution. In this timely book, she introduces Flexing—a technique individuals, teams, and entire organizations can use to learn, grow, and develop their skills and knowledge with every new project, work assignment, and problem. Flexing empowers you to embrace any challenge and adapt to any change, yielding practical, valuable takeaways that ensure growth. Flexing helps you move ahead when you’re confronted with a new challenge, or simply want to develop a vital skill. It’s a journey that begins with setting a flex goal—stating explicitly what you want to learn and how you want to grow. Once that flex goal is set, you then begin to run experiments, solicit feedback from peers or colleagues, and monitor and tweak your progress on the way to achieving your goal. Flexing can be tailored to each person, allowing you to reflect on your own experiences and incorporate the lessons you learn in the next project you tackle. It’s a growth mindset that will help you become the best version of yourself. Flexing also works with teams and organizations. Ashford teaches small groups and large how to implement flexing to ensure their members are ready for new challenges. With more people moving to remote working full-time and developing new ways of collaborating in teams, this warm and practical guide will help every professional and any organization on the journey to greater effectiveness.

The magical power of leadership is the effective blend of the courage of a lion with the curiosity of a cat. This myth-busting book will alter your leadership perspectives and practices by providing cutting edge substance, compelling examples, and insightful tools. —Chip R. Bell, author of Inside Your Customer’s Imagination All we know with absolute certainty is that we live in complex, uncertain, and rapidly changing times. Despite our best attempts to predict the future, we are often caught off-guard and surprised when it arrives. Whether a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic, global economic shifts, political upheaval, or technological evolution, as senior leaders we must navigate these tumultuous times and make tough decisions to guide our organizations to success. Champion leaders want to be truly exceptional regardless of the maelstrom of change they are experiencing. Not only do they want their organizations to succeed, but they also want to live fulfilling lives. They want the same for those in their organizations and personal lives as well. How do we effectively lead in times of constant, often dramatic change? And, equally important, how do we simultaneously create a satisfying, meaningful life? The C2 Factor – the synergistic application of curiosity and courage – offers a path to both. This book reveals that when leaders manifest both traits, they embrace the professional and personal opportunities the future brings. When the landscape is shifting beneath our feet the C2 Factor enables us to lead more effectively and helps us cultivate more fulfilling personal lives. While other books have looked at curiosity and courage separately, The C2 Factor for Leadership examines how, when combined, profound curiosity and relentless courage lead to remarkable outcomes. One enhances the other in a powerful alchemy that improves our outcomes, how we show up as leaders in our organizations and as human beings in our personal lives. Beginning with ourselves and expanding to our relationships, our teams, our organizations, and to the world, this book demonstrates how the C2 Factor can be applied for superior results. To be a truly exceptional leader, to live a satisfying life, we must have profound curiosity and relentless courage. We must exercise the C2 Factor. Without it, we run the risk of being leaders who are robotic, academic, or reckless. With the C2 Factor, we can be champions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God gave me the concept of "godly champion" several years ago and directed me to write this book. Initially I thought that the motivating factor behind writing this book was to leave a reminder of the many discussions held and lessons taught to my children over the years. However, in time the Lord made it clear to me that this book was also meant to be shared with His chosen people. A champion, as defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary, is "one who shows marked superiority." As children of the almighty God, we are markedly superior because of the acceptance, belief, and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. God repeatedly states throughout the Bible that He would never leave us nor forsake us. God ensures the victory for us in every circumstance, situation, challenge, or obstacle. He works out everything for our good because we love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). This is what we can expect from God in our godly champion partnership. What God expects or demands from us is our love, worship, obedience, trust, and devotion to Him only. Being a champion in any regard requires diligent work. Therefore, godly champions must commit to praying continually, reading and studying the Bible consistently, worshiping Him daily, and trusting and obeying Him always. We as God's children represent Him every second of the day, whether we are in the confines of our homes or at a public/corporate venue. He expects us to represent Him honorably, diligently, zealously, courageously, and with great swag. That's right, swag! I wholeheartedly believe God wants us to represent Him proudly with a colorful, spirited style. Although we encounter trials, tribulations, and setbacks, we adapt, adjust, and overcome all obstacles because of the strength and grit afforded to us by the indwelling Holy Spirit. This embodies the persona of a godly champion. We are victorious!
