Book Synopsis Multiracial Families by : Julianna Fields
Download or read book Multiracial Families written by Julianna Fields and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What kind of challenges do multiracial families face? What issues do families deal with when the mother and father are of different races and the children are a mixture of the two? What about when the parents are of one race but have adopted children of another? Some of their challenges are the same as those facing families who are the same race, of course, but there are others that arise because of the families' multiracial nature. Do family members have trouble understanding what each other are going through because they do not share racial background? What about culture: should they celebrate their different races' holidays separately or blend them together to create new traditions? These are the kinds of questions the families in this book frequently face. What they have learned from their experiences can help us as well as we relate to people of different cultures.

Book Synopsis De Gruyter Handbook of Degrowth by : Lauren Eastwood
Download or read book De Gruyter Handbook of Degrowth written by Lauren Eastwood and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-03-04 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Degrowth has emerged as one of the most exciting, and contested, fields of research into the drivers of global heating, ecological collapse, and economic injustice. The perspective is both a critique of existing growth-based models of development, which it argues have put humanity on a collision course with non-negotiable ecological limits, and a vision for a brighter future in which humans and non-humans alike can flourish. By putting an end to growth-seeking economic development and boundless energetic and material throughputs, degrowth’s proponents suggest we can build an economy that meets the material needs of people and planet for generations to come. This handbook’s contributions signal the importance of degrowth across multiple disciplines and practices. Along the way, they grapple with some of the most critical questions, ideological assumptions, policies, and social struggles of our time. The handbook approaches degrowth as a loosely knit and developing set of interdisciplinary propositions about what it might take to achieve a world of human and non-human flourishing. Contributors explore, challenge, and critique degrowth’s propositions and its prospects of shaping scholarly agendas, policy frameworks, and social movements. Essays consider degrowth from a variety of empirical and theoretical vantages, including urban design, architecture, political economy, political ecology, critical geography, and political theory. This integrative approach, at once critical and constructive, aims to preserve for readers the sense of possibility that has drawn people to degrowth scholarship thus far.

Book Synopsis South Asian Filmscapes by : Elora Halim Chowdhury
Download or read book South Asian Filmscapes written by Elora Halim Chowdhury and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In South Asia massive anticolonial movements in the twentieth century created nation-states and reset national borders, forming the basis for emerging film cultures. Following the upheaval of the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947 and the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, new national cinemas promoted and reinforced prevailing hierarches of identity and belonging. At the same time, industrial and independent cinemas contributed to remarkably porous and hybrid film cultures, reflecting the intertwining of South Asian histories and their reciprocal cultural influences. This cross-fertilization within South Asian cultural production continues today. South Asian Filmscapes excavates these complex politics and poetics of bordered identity and crossings through selected histories of cinema in South Asia. Several essays reveal ways in which fixed notions of national identity have been destabilized by the cross-border mobility of filmed arts and practitioners, while others interrogate how filmic politics intersects with discourses of nationalism, sexuality and gender, religion, and language. Together, they offer a fluid approach to the multiple histories and encounters that conjure “South Asia” as a geographic and political entity in the region and globally through a cinematic imagination.
