Book excerpt: Cervical Spine Research Society European Branch "The Cervical Spine Research Society is an organization of individuals interested in clinical and research problems of the cervical spine. Its purpose is for the exchange and development of ideas and philosophy regarding the diagnosis and treatment of cervical spine injury and disease. The com position of the membership should reflect the varying specialities and disciplines dealing with the cervical spine; biochemical, engineering, neurology, neurosurgery, radiology, orthopedic surgery and others", wrote J. William Fielding, New York City, one of the Society'S founding members. In 1984 the membership list contained 118 names. The overwhelming majority of members came from the United States, four from Canada and 9 Europeans, amongst them Mario Boni. He was the organizer, in con junction with the members of the Cervical Spine Research Society, of a splendid "International Meeting for the updating on pathology and surgery Preface VI of the cervical spine" held in Pavia (Italy) in May 1982. It was from this meeting that the idea of a European branch of the Society first originated, with the purpose of establishing multi-disciplinary meetings in Europe. The first meeting of the European branch was organized by A. Weidner in September 1984 in Osnabriick (Federal Republic of Germany). Mario Boni was elected president. He was not only the initiator but also the drivinglorce who tirelessly promoted the development of the European branch. Mario Boni's death in 1986 at the age of 64 was a great loss to us.

It has been my pleasure, as Director, to be associated with Professor Denaro, first as a Sessional Consultant in diseases of the spine and finally, after his promotion to the permanent staff, as Associate Professor. Professor Denaro began his postgraduate program of spe cialization, and hence his career, in the Orthopedic Clinic of the University of Pavia under the tutorship of Professor Mario Boni. It was the latter who directed and guided his develop ment in studying the disease processes of the vertebral column. In his pursuit of knowledge, he undertook additional studies in foreign clinics, including the Wellesley Hospital at the Uni versity of Toronto with Professor 1. MacNab and Professor V. F ornasier. He spent a full year at the Orthopedic Clinic of the University of Paris under the guidance of Professor Roy Camille. He derived great benefit from the clinical experience gained there and became acquainted with advanced and spe cialized surgical techniques specific to his field of interest. More recently, since accepting his current appointment, he has been able to put into practice the expertise developed over 20 years of study and research. Not only does he have extensive personal clinical experience, but he very wisely undertook to maintain a thorough, complete, and accurate record of the experience gathered from his case load.

Book excerpt: Design and implement a rehab program on your own with Pathology and Intervention in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, 2nd Edition. Part of Magee's popular Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Series, this pathology text for physical therapists provides clear guidance on patient management relative to specific musculoskeletal pathology, injury, and illness - all based on a sound understanding of basic science and principles of practice. It focuses on the specific pathologies most often seen in the clinic, and discusses the best methods for intervention for the different areas of the body in the context of the tissue-healing model. Each intervention features a rationale, along with the pathology and problem presented; stage of healing; evidence in the literature; and clinical reasoning considerations. Dedicated and focused information on the specific pathologies most often seen in the clinic, as well as the best methods for intervention for the different areas of the body, minimizes duplication of information by referring you to other titles in the Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Series for basic scientific information regarding inflammation, healing, tissue deformation, and the development of muscular strength and endurance. Trusted experts in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, along with internationally recognized contributors, present the best evidence behind contemporary interventions directed toward the treatment of the impairments and functional limitations associated with acute, chronic, and congenital musculoskeletal conditions occurring across the lifespan. Evidence-based content, with over 4,000 references, supports the scientific principles for rehabilitation interventions, providing the best evidence for the management of musculoskeletal pathology and injury. NEW! The Skin and Wound Healing chapter looks at the numerous tools available to assist in objectively monitoring and treating a patient with an acute or chronic wound. NEW! Rotator Cuff Pathology chapter highlights the anatomy, function, and etiology of the rotary cuff, and addresses rotary cuff injuries, physical examination, and non-operative and operative treatment. UPDATED! Substantially revised chapter on the Thoracic Ring ApproachT facilitates clinical reasoning for the treatment of the thoracic spine and ribs through the assessment and treatment of thoracic spine disorders and how they relate to the whole kinetic chain. UPDATED! Revised Lumbar Spine - Treatment of Motor Control Disorders chapter explores some of the research evidence and clinical reasoning pertaining to instability of the lumbar spine so you can better organize your knowledge for immediate use in the clinical setting. UPDATED! Significantly revised chapter on the treatment of pelvic pain and dysfunction presents an overview of specific pathologies pertaining to the various systems of the pelvis - and highlights how "The Integrated Systems Model for Disability and Pain" facilitates evidence-based management of the often complex patient with pelvic pain and dysfunction. Book excerpt: The comprehensive approach to anatomy is a new attempt to understand the organization of anatomical structures instead of only memorizing details, which is both time-consuming and prone to error. The basic principle is that man did not design man, a truth which presents the solution and not the problem. This kind of approach requires first observing a function and identifying, in engineering terms, the technical problems that need to be solved in order to achieve that function. In a second step the anatomical solution is examined in terms of validation and should always be an intelligent solution that puts the characteristics of specific living tissues to optimal use. Anatomy is obviously the mandatory basis of all types of medical practice. For centuries, its rigorous methodology has relied on dissection, which is the only means to precisely identify the morphology of organs and for surgeons to learn how to directly and safely reach the structures they need to operate on. Accordingly, this book includes illustrations of many dissections and anatomical sections in order to provide a realistic view of the complex organization of the human body. This book addresses the needs of a broad range of medical and paramedical practitioners interested in movements and their disorders: MDs and surgeons of all specialties, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, X-ray manipulators, osteopathic specialists, etc. Its goal is to demonstrate the amazing intelligence and complexity of human motor functions and to better grasp the how and why of their construction.

Since that time, various cervical laminoplasty techniques have been further analyzed and modified, and have proven to be clinically successful. Until now cervical laminoplasty has been practiced primarily in Japan, and surgeons outside Japan had only limited access to the detailed English literature needed to make full use of the procedures. This book fills that gap in English information and provides a detailed, up-to-date guide to performing safe and effective cervical laminoplasty. Drawing on the latest knowledge from Japan, the book covers the history of cervical laminoplasty, surgical anatomy, basic procedures, modified procedures, possible complications, and perspectives on the future of expansive laminoplasty. This volume by leaders in the field is an excellent guide for all surgeons interested in laminoplasty.

Book excerpt: Diagnostic Reference Index of Clinical Neurology aims to give the busy clinician a fast, easy-to-use guide to the core neurological literature published from 1980 to 1986. This book is divided into two sections, key words and references. The keywords section consists of neuroscience terms and each main entry is followed by reference citation numbers and corresponding references. This index, unlike the usual computerized systems for literature retrieval, is structured around clinical problems and uses the approach and terminology of a practicing neurologist. The contents were sources from the full text of articles that were published in critical core of fourteen major international English-language journals in medicine and neurology. This book will be of interest to neurology students and to practicing clinical neurologists.
