Download or read book The Long Land War written by Jo Guldi and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive history of ideas about land redistribution, allied political movements, and their varied consequences around the world "An epic work of breathtaking scope and moral power, The Long Land War offers the definitive account of the rise and fall of land rights around the world over the last 150 years."--Matthew Desmond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City Jo Guldi tells the story of a global struggle to bring food, water, and shelter to all. Land is shown to be a central motor of politics in the twentieth century: the basis of movements for giving reparations to formerly colonized people, protests to limit the rent paid by urban tenants, intellectual battles among development analysts, and the capture of land by squatters taking matters into their own hands. The book describes the results of state-engineered "land reform" policies beginning in Ireland in 1881 until U.S.-led interests and the World Bank effectively killed them off in 1974. The Long Land War provides a definitive narrative of land redistribution alongside an unflinching critique of its failures, set against the background of the rise and fall of nationalism, communism, internationalism, information technology, and free-market economics. In considering how we could make the earth livable for all, she works out the important relationship between property ownership and justice on a changing planet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with an interpretation of the restructured Moroccan political system during the past decade and continues with analyses of the makhzen (royal patronage system), parties, and public opinion. Three chapters provide a frank, hard-hitting examination of Morrocco's economic problems and conditions. There's an interesting interpretation of Moroccan socio-political relations based on mediation and bargaining. In addition, the contributors shed light on the Moroccan military in politics, the impact of the Saharan War on Moroccan domestic and foreign policy, the relation between religion and politics, and much more.

Book Synopsis Irrigation in the Mediterranean by : François Molle
Download or read book Irrigation in the Mediterranean written by François Molle and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediterranean irrigation is diverse due to, among other factors, the relative importance of water in the economy of each country, varied levels of aridity, heterogeneous levels economic, social and technological levels of development, and differences in political and social organization. However, most of the Mediterranean countries face similar problems to meet their water demands because of the scarcity and variability of renewable resources, growing water requirements from non-agricultural sectors, increasing environmental concerns related to water quality and environmental degradation, a social demand for larger public participation, and important technological changes. The time has come to reconsider the “not one drop lost to the sea” philosophy of yesteryears largely and to 'live within limits'. This book focuses on eight selected countries (Tunisia, Morocco, Spain, France, Italy, Turkey, Israel and Egypt) and provides a comparative perspective that both thoroughly explores their specificities and identifies the common challenges faced by the irrigation sector in these countries. The book has been written at a critical moment, when the continued application of a supply-side water management model is revealing its unsustainable nature in numerous places; when significant technological changes are taking place in the irrigation sector; when new forms of management and governance are widely held as badly needed; and finally, when climate change is compounding many of the difficulties that have characterized irrigation policies and practices in the past decades. This complicated future context makes Mediterranean irrigation face various political dilemmas on water management, raising social tensions, triggering territorial and land conflicts, and stimulating new technological developments. This book provides a timely analysis of the particular trajectory of eight Mediterranean countries in these uncertain transformations, and attempts to identify the best strategies to avert or overcome future risks.
