Book excerpt: Presented through 20 case studies covering Europe and the Near East, Neighbours and Successors of Rome investigates development in the production of glass and the mechanisms of the wider glass economy as part of a wider material culture in Europe and the Near East around the later first millennium AD. Though highlighting and solidifying chronology, patterns of distribution, and typology, the primary aims of the collection are to present a new methodology that emphasises regional workshops, scientific data, and the wider trade culture. This methodology embraces a shift in conceptual approach to the study of glass by explaining typological change through the existence of a thriving supra-national commercial network that responded to market demands and combines the results of a range of new scientific techniques into a framework that stresses co-dependence and similarities between the various sites considered. Such an approach, particularly within Byzantine and Early Islamic glass production, is a pioneering concept that contextualises individual sites within the wider region. By twinning a critique of archaeometric methods with the latest archaeological research, the contributors present a foundation for glass research, seen through the lens of consumption demands and geographical necessity, that analyses production centres and traditional typological knowledge. In so doing the they bridge an important divide by demonstrating the co-habitability of diverse approaches and disciplines, linking, for example, the production of Campanulate bowls from Gallaecia with the burgeoning international late antique style. Equally, the particular details of those pieces allow us to identify a regional style as well as local production. As such this compilation provides a highly valuable resource for archaeologists, anthropologists, and art historians.

Book excerpt: Excavation of the ancient city of Morgantina in southeastern Sicily since 1955 has recovered an extraordinary quantity and variety of pottery, both locally made and imported. This volume presents the fine-ware pottery dating between the second half of the fourth century BCE, when Morgantina was a thriving inland center closely tied to the Hellenistic east through Syracuse, and the first half of the first century CE, when Morgantina had been reduced to a dwindling Roman provincial town that would soon be abandoned. Bearing gloss and often paint or relief, these fine ceramics were mostly tableware, and together they provide a well-defined picture of the evolving material culture of an important urban site over several centuries. And since virtually all these vessels come from dated deposits, this volume provides wide-ranging contributions to the chronology of Hellenistic and early Roman pottery. An introductory chapter sketches out a comprehensive history of the city, discusses the many well-dated archaeological deposits that contained the excavated pottery, and defines the major fabrics of the ceramics found at the site. The bulk of the volume consists of a scholarly presentation of more than 1,500 pottery vessels, analyzing their shapes, fabrics, chronology, decoration, and techniques of fabrication. This rich ceramic material includes significant bodies of Republican black-gloss and red-gloss vases, Sicilian polychrome ware, and Eastern Sigillata A, as well as early Italian terra sigillata, with numerous examples imported from Arezzo and other Italian centers, along with regional versions from Campania and elsewhere on Sicily. The relief ware includes important groups of third-century BCE medallion cups and hemispherical moldmade cups of the second and first centuries BCE. Morgantina was also an active center of pottery production, and the debris from several workshops has been recovered, enabling Shelley Stone to reconstruct the working techniques and materials of the local craftsmen, the range of ceramics they produced, and how their products were influenced by pottery imported to the site from elsewhere on Sicily, the Italian mainland, and even more distant centers. The volume also presents new information about the sources of the clay used by the Morgantina potters, as revealed by X-ray fluorescence analysis of selected vases.

Dans ce domaine souvent quelque peu aride ou ingrat de la céramologie, liée à l’archéologie de terrain et en formant comme le langage explicite pour qui sait le déchiffrer, chacune de ces rencontres internationales-depuis la réunion initiale et fondatrice de Valbonne en 1978 – a été importante et révélatrice d’une évolution rapide et féconde de ces enquêtes. Elles ouvrent la voie, bien souvent, à de nouvellesrecherches toujours mieux contrôlées et faisant appel de plus en plus à l’archéométrie. L’imposant volume des Actes de Venise – ville symbole s’il en est par sa place au coeur de cette région méditerranéenne d’abord privilégiée – constitue désormais dans cette série une pièce maîtresse à bien des titres. Par son ampleur et la multiplicité de ses acteurs (qui surent tous se plier à des règles strictes) comme par la richesse des interventions présentées: si les «nouvelles découvertes» forment toujours une grande partie des apports, de nouveaux thèmes se précisent. Outre les recherches consacrées à «Venise et son territoire» (significativement d’ailleurs ouvertes aussi à l’analyse des importations orientales perçues dans cette zone), les travaux sur l’évolution des techniques, lescontraintes commerciales, les contextes sociaux, structurent des parts fondamentales de ce congrès. Il s’y ajoute aussi des ouvertures intéressantes et parfois surprenantes sur la place des céramiques dans l’architecture. Ou plus audacieusement encore, des enquêtes sur l’utilisation conjointe des sources écrites et archéologiques dans le monde byzantin, sur le décor intérieur des églises de Chypre, sur les dernières découvertes effectuées récemment à Mertola dans un contexte riverain spécifique. Comme toujours donc, mais ici avec une étendue exceptionnelle, ce congrès surprend d’abord et s’impose par l’abondance de la documentation ainsi présentée avec autant de soin que de générosité: une «mise à disposition» qui force à l’admiration comme à la gratitude envers les auteurs et les organisateurs de ce congrès, et d’abord à son maître d’oeuvre, Sauro Gelichi, qui a accepté ainsi avec son équipe, une très lourde charge. Il s’y ajoute l’affirmation d’un élargissement décisif de l’espace étudié. Centré à l’origine, par prudence comme par nécessité, sur la partie occidentale de la Méditerranée, celui-ci s’ouvre à présent – et de façon décisive – sur l’ensemble des régions méditerranéennes, et bien au-delà, sur leurs zones d’influences ou d’inspiration. Apports et échanges de plus en plus complexes, où la part des régions orientales, proches (ou surtout peut-être) plus lointaines, ne cesse et ne cessera sans doute pas de s’affirmer. Une nouvelle période s’instaure donc dans l’évolution de ces rencontres dont il faut souhaiter la continuité sous des formes de plus en plus exigeantes et critiques, dans un phénomène de mort et de transfiguration tel que celui rappelé ici par Juan Zozaya, l’un des premiers fondateurs de ces congrès. Important structural and mortuary discoveries abound, including a district of lavish houses with exquisite mosaic pavement and an Early Christian Octagon. The large artifactual assemblage encompasses a variety of objects from pottery and lamps to glass, coins, and jewelry. Bones and teeth from over 200 individuals illustrate differences in health over time, while thousands of bones and shells from a variety of animals attest to diet and subsistence. This study paints a picture of a Corinthian community, small but prosperous and well connected, actively participating in an urban elite culture expressed through decorative art and monumental architecture.
