Book Synopsis An Archaeology of Australia Since 1788 by : Susan Lawrence
Download or read book An Archaeology of Australia Since 1788 written by Susan Lawrence and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-21 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an important new synthesis of archaeological work carried out in Australia on the post-contact period. It draws on dozens of case studies from a wide geographical and temporal span to explore the daily life of Australians in settings such as convict stations, goldfields, whalers' camps, farms, pastoral estates and urban neighbourhoods. The different conditions experienced by various groups of people are described in detail, including rich and poor, convicts and their superiors, Aboriginal people, women, children, and migrant groups. The social themes of gender, class, ethnicity, status and identity inform every chapter, demonstrating that these are vital parts of human experience, and cannot be separated from archaeologies of industry, urbanization and culture contact. The book engages with a wide range of contemporary discussions and debates within Australian history and the international discipline of historical archaeology. The colonization of Australia was part of the international expansion of European hegemony in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The material discussed here is thus fundamentally part of the global processes of colonization and the creation of settler societies, the industrial revolution, the development of mass consumer culture, and the emergence of national identities. Drawing out these themes and integrating them with the analysis of archaeological materials highlights the vital relevance of archaeology in modern society.
Download or read book Folk Art written by Henry Glassie and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-13 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listen to the artists of the Brazilian Northeast. Their work, they say, comes of continuity and creativity. Continuity runs along lines of learning toward social coherence. Creativity brings challenges and deep personal satisfaction. What they say and do in Brazil aligns with ethnographic evidence from New Mexico and North Carolina; from Ireland, Portugal, and Italy; from Nigeria, Turkey, India, and Bangladesh; from China and Japan. This book is about that, about folk art as a sign of human unity.
Download or read book Daniel Johnston written by Henry Glassie and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DANIEL JOHNSTON, raised on a farm in Randolph County, returned from Thailand with a new way to make monumental pots. Back home in North Carolina, he built a log shop and a whale of a kiln for wood-firing. Then he set out to create beautiful pots, grand in scale, graceful in form, and burned bright in a blend of ash and salt. With mastery achieved and apprentices to teach, Daniel Johnston turned his brain to massive installations. First, he made a hundred large jars and lined them along the rough road that runs past his shop and kiln. Next, he arranged curving clusters of big pots inside pine frames, slatted like corn cribs, to separate them from the slick interiors of four fine galleries in succession. Then, in concluding the second phase of his professional career, Daniel Johnston built an open-air installation on the grounds around the North Carolina Museum of Art, where 178 handmade, wood-fired columns march across a slope in a straight line, 350 feet in length, that dips and lifts with the heave while the tops of the pots maintain a level horizon. In 2000, when he was still Mark Hewitt's apprentice, Daniel Johnston met Henry Glassie, who has done fieldwork on ceramic traditions in the United States, Brazil, Italy, Turkey, Bangladesh, China, and Japan. Over the years, during a steady stream of intimate interviews, Glassie gathered the understanding that enabled him to compose this portrait of Daniel Johnston, a young artist who makes great pots in the eastern Piedmont of North Carolina.
Book Synopsis Sir Donald Bradman Memorabilia by : James Merchant
Download or read book Sir Donald Bradman Memorabilia written by James Merchant and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Donald has always encapsulated a lot of what inspires me. He was a remarkable sportsman and an Australian Legend, who handled his fame with class. His cricket prowess and longevity of life meant that a lot of memorabilia was produced since around 1930 and there is always a market for it. As a person inflicted with the collecting bug and a strong sense of National pride, I couldnt help myself! There are many collectors and museums in the cricketing world, but there is very little reference material relating to their treasures. I have always kept the sales advertisements, brochures, certificates and boxes pertaining to the items in my collection, because they give it more meaning. An item of memorabilia can give you visual stimulus and even prompt some feelings relating to its procurement or your journey to see it. However, Ive learnt that a little bit of knowledge can also transcend an item of memorabilia from an object to something more of a friend or family member. For the statistically minded, there are 209 A4 pages, featuring 141 different items, 214 colour images, 381 references and 89 different cricketers are mentioned in connection with the items.

Book Synopsis Margaret Preston by : Lesley Harding
Download or read book Margaret Preston written by Lesley Harding and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrated for her vibrant and distinctive pictures of indigenous flowers, artist Margaret Preston was an equally colourful and outspoken personality. Less well known is her legacy as a generous and insightful teacher and keen cook, and her deep sense of civic duty. She was passionate about the need for a modern national culture that reflected everyday life. For Preston, the building blocks of such a culture were not to be found in the Australian pastoral landscape tradition, but in the home and garden. Maintaining that art should be within everyone’s reach, she published widely on the methods and techniques of a host of creative pursuits—from pottery, printmaking and basket weaving, to the gentle art of flower arranging. She devoted much of her career to the genre of still life, depicting humble domestic objects and flowers from her garden, and often painting in the kitchen while keeping 'one eye on the stew'. Drawing on recipes from handwritten books found in the National Gallery of Australia and richly illustrated with Preston’s paintings, prints and photographs this book sheds new light on the fascinating private life of a much-loved Australian artist.
