Book excerpt: The Sixth Army Materials Technology Conference, IICeramics for High Performance Applications-II I-Reliabilityll , was co-sponsored by the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center and the U. S. Department of Energy, Office of Transportation Programs . The program highlighted all issues relevant to the reliability of ceramics in advanced systems. The conference emphasized programmatic reviews of the major efforts on ceramic gas turbine technology, on an international basis. The conference showed how ceramic design, materials development, materials processing, NDE, and component systems testing are being integrated and iterated in specific engine development programs . Further , the conference promoted inter change among the various technical disciplines working in the advanced turbine and heat engine areas. This volume will join its earlier companions, Ceramics for High Performance A lications (1974), and Ceramics for High Performance Applications-II 1 7 ,in chronicling the rapid progress being made in the applicaton of ceramics to the very demanding service environ ment of gas turbine and piston engines. At the last meeting of this series at Newport, R t, in March 1977, successful high temperature tests of ceramic components in test rigs were described.

Book Synopsis Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics by : William G. Fahrenholtz
Download or read book Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics written by William G. Fahrenholtz and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-10-10 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive book to focus on ultra-high temperature ceramic materials in more than 20 years Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics are a family of compounds that display an unusual combination of properties, including extremely high melting temperatures (>3000°C), high hardness, and good chemical stability and strength at high temperatures. Typical UHTC materials are the carbides, nitrides, and borides of transition metals, but the Group IV compounds (Ti, Zr, Hf) plus TaC are generally considered to be the main focus of research due to the superior melting temperatures and stable high-melting temperature oxide that forms in situ. Rather than focusing on the latest scientific results, Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics: Materials for Extreme Environment Applications broadly and critically combines the historical aspects and the state-of-the-art on the processing, densification, properties, and performance of boride and carbide ceramics. In reviewing the historic studies and recent progress in the field, Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics: Materials for Extreme Environment Applications provides: Original reviews of research conducted in the 1960s and 70s Content on electronic structure, synthesis, powder processing, densification, property measurement, and characterization of boride and carbide ceramics. Emphasis on materials for hypersonic aerospace applications such as wing leading edges and propulsion components for vehicles traveling faster than Mach 5 Information on materials used in the extreme environments associated with high speed cutting tools and nuclear power generation Contributions are based on presentations by leading research groups at the conference "Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics: Materials for Extreme Environment Applications II" held May 13-19, 2012 in Hernstein, Austria. Bringing together disparate researchers from academia, government, and industry in a singular forum, the meeting cultivated didactic discussions and efforts between bench researchers, designers and engineers in assaying results in a broader context and moving the technology forward toward near- and long-term use. This book is useful for furnace manufacturers, aerospace manufacturers that may be pursuing hypersonic technology, researchers studying any aspect of boride and carbide ceramics, and practitioners of high-temperature structural ceramics.
Book Synopsis Preparation and Characterization of Materials by : J Honig
Download or read book Preparation and Characterization of Materials written by J Honig and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preparation and Characterization of Materials brings together the proceedings of the Indo-U.S. Workshop on the Preparation and Characterization of Materials, held on February 19-23, 1981, at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India. The papers focus on advances and developments in the preparation and characterization of materials such as ferroics, layered materials, metal oxides and other electronic materials, amorphous materials including glasses, and high-temperature ceramics. This book is comprised of 25 chapters and begins with a discussion on crystal growth and other preparation techniques, touching on topics such as solid state synthesis of complex oxides and preparation of soft ferrites. The application of neutron scattering techniques and analytical electron microscopy to materials research and materials science is then considered, along with the dielectric and electro-optic applications of ferroics and the preparation and characterization of synthetic layered inorganic ion exchangers. Subsequent chapters deal with metal oxides and other electronic materials; glasses and other amorphous materials; and high-temperature ceramics such as silicon nitride. This monograph will be of interest to materials scientists and engineers as well as students and researchers in materials science.

Download or read book Structural Ceramics written by John Jr. Wachtman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatise on Materials Science and Technology, Volume 29: Structural Ceramics presents an overview of structural ceramics. This book begins with a survey of potential uses, designs, and barriers of particular types of structural ceramics. The silicon carbide family, silicon nitride and sialon family, and transformation toughened ceramics are discussed in detail, followed by an analysis of the various processing routes of each family of structural ceramics. This publication concludes with a review of the tribology of structural ceramics, considering many applications for structural ceramics in heat engines and other machinery that involve moving parts which must often resist wear or erosion. This volume is recommended for engineers, scientists, and researchers concerned with structural ceramics.
