Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Connecting past and present, this book proposes the concepts of rememory (rememoria) and counterpoetics as decolonial tools for studying the art, popular culture, literature, music, and healing practices of Central America and the diaspora in the United States. Building on the theory of rememory articulated in Toni Morrison's Beloved, the volume examines the concept as an embodied experience of a sensory place and time lived in the here and now. By employing a wide array of sources, Alma's research breaks ground in subject matter and methods, considering cultural and historical ties across countries, regions, and traditions while offering critical perspectives on topics such as immigration, forced assimilation, maternal love, gender violence, community arts, and decolonization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Connecting the massive landscapes of North and South America are Mexico and Central America. An area of fascination and study for geographers and scholars from around the world, for millennia these lands and people have played important roles in the discoveries and distributions of civilizations, resources, and nations. These regions have stimulated a large amount of research and publications across the sub-disciplines of geography. The Geography of Central America and Mexico: A Scholarly Guide and Bibliography by Thomas A. Rumney collects, organizes, and presents as many of these publications as possible to encourage efforts in the teaching, study, and continuing scholarship of the geography of this area, which includes Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Beginning with the region as a whole, each chapter that follows--one per nation--is divided by the specific sub-disciplines of geography: cultural, social, economic, historical, physical and environmental, political, and urban. Each section is further divided by document type: atlases, books, book chapters, articles from scholarly journals, master's theses, and doctoral dissertations. Although the majority of entries recorded focus on English-language works, selected entries written in Spanish, as well as French, German, and other languages, are included (with entries' titles translated into English and noted accordingly).

Book excerpt: Central America was the only part of the far-reaching Spanish Empire in continental America not to experience destructive independence wars in the period between 1810 and 1824. The essays in this volume draw on new historical research to explain why, and to delve into what did happen during the independence period in Central America and Chiapas. The contributors, distinguished scholars from Central America, North America, and Europe, consider themes of power, rebellion, sovereignty, and resistance throughout the Kingdom of Guatemala beginning in the late eighteenth century and ending with independence from Spain and the debate surrounding the decision to join the Mexican Empire. Their work reveals that a “conflict-free” separation from Spain was more complex than is usually understood, and shows how such a separation was crucial to late-nineteenth-century developments. These essays tell us how different groups seized on the political instabilities of Spain to maximize their interests; how Latin American elites prepared elaborate rituals to legitimize power dynamics; why the Spanish military governor Bustamante’s role in Central America should be reconsidered; how Indian and popular uprisings had more to do with tax burdens than with independence rhetoric; how the scholastic thought of Thomas Aquinas played a role in political thinking during the independence period; and why Mexico’s Plan de Iguala, the independence program promoted by Agustín de Iturbide, finally broke Central American elites’ ties to Spain. Focusing on regional and small-town dynamics as well as urban elites, these essays combine to offer an unusually broad and varied perspective on and a new understanding of Central America in the period of independence.

Book excerpt: Prior to the 1980s Honduras was an obscure backwater, of little public or policy concern in the United States. With the advent of the Reagan administration, however, Hondurans found themselves at the center of the US-Central American imbroglio, a launching pad for the administration's contra war against the Sandinista government in Nicaragua and for counterinsurgency operations against guerrillas in El Salvador. Placing events in the context of Honduran history, the authors provide penetrating insights into the causes of revolution in Central America and the sources of stability that enabled Honduras to escape the civil strife that consumed its neighbors. At the same time, the work offers a fascinating account of Honduran domestic politics and of the personalities, motives, and maneuvers of policymakers on both sides of the U.S.-Honduras relationship—too often a tale of intrigue, violence, and corruption.

Book excerpt: The name of the painter Enrique Grau is inseparable from the history of art in Colombia. Since his astonishing debut as a prodigy in the early 1940s, Grau has explored virtually every avenue of art: drawing, engraving, collage, silkscreen, woodcuts, painting, sculpture, theatrical costumes and sets, cinema, murals, frescos, and objects. In the course of his long career, Grau has achieved and consolidated a style that is personal and classical at the same time; he is unique in the panorama of Latin American art. This book pays homage to an artist as vital at the age of 83 as he was when the public first brought him acclaim over 60 years ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America has a long tradition of constitutional reform. Since the democratic transitions of the 1980s, most countries have amended their constitutions at least once, and some have even undergone constitutional reform several times. The global phenomenon of a new constitutionalism, with enhanced rights provisions, finds expression in the region, but the new constitutions, such as those of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, also have some peculiar characteristics which are discussed in this important book. Authors from a number of different disciplines offer a general overview of constitutional reforms in Latin America since 1990. They explore the historical, philosophical and doctrinal differences between traditional and new constitutionalism in Latin America and examine sources of inspiration. The book also covers sociopolitical settings, which factors and actors are relevant for the reform process, and analyzes the constitutional practices after reform, including the question of whether the recent constitutional reforms created new post-liberal democracies with an enhanced human and social rights record, or whether they primarily serve the ambitions of new political leaders.
