Book excerpt: Excerpt from Central Business District Study, Preliminary Plan, Zebulon, North Carolina Zebulon's Central Business District is presented in this report. Problems of parking, traffic, land use, pedestrian circulation, and the visual appearance of the business district are analyzed. Trends in population, employment, income, and retail sales were studied in order to estimate area needs for floor space, parking, and pedestrian circulation on the plan. Zebulon's Central Business District has developed over a number of years without benefit of an overall plan. Physical facilities in the business district (streets, parking, buildings, are becoming obsolete as a result of customers' demands for greater shopping convenience. Shopping centers in Raleigh, Wilson, and Rocky Mount now offer the customer another shopping experience in convenient, well-planned shopping areas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wendell, North Carolina, Central Business District, Preliminary Design Plan North carolinaintegrated landscaping, and coordinated design and furniture all providing an atmosphere conducive to enjoyable buying in a pleasant market place environment. Most central business districts are the products of many years in the past at a time when there was no automobile. Therefore, if the existing streets had been wider and more open space left for off street parking lots, there would not be as many critical problems facing the vitality of the institution of the downtown central business district. It might be concluded rather logically from this reasoning that if a central business district plan had been prepared in the early days of the town all these unfortunate situations could have been averted. However, living and buying patterns have changed immeasurably within the past half century. The advent of the private automobile as a prime factor of transportation to and from work and shopping has had a profound effect on the economic and physical design of all central business districts. Ergo, the planning and improvements of any vital downtown must be a continuous process. The threat of the economic vitality of the small town central business district is not a matter of location for the downtown as normally sited at or near the geographic center of the community. It is not a question of diversity either as the central business core has the majority of trade, services, professional, financial, and governmental activity of the community. It is also not a lack of investment as the downtown has the highest concentration of property values in the area. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mount Airy, North Carolina, Central Business District Study, 1968 In preparation for this report much research and back ground work has been developed to be used as a basis for the conclusions and proposals that are put forth in this study. Due to the technical nature and the amount of material that was compiled, this information has been bound in a separate publication and printed in a limited number of copies. Copies of this material have been distributed to the members of the Town Board, members of the Planning Board, City Officials and to other agencies and individuals that can make appropriate use of this data. In addition, file copies will be kept at City Hall for reference by any interested parties. This study will attempt to develop an overall approach to revitalize the central core area into a shopping - business - social facility that will truly be an integral part of the everyday life of its citizens and an area that each individual will take pride in. It will be very easy to discuss the potentials that are available in Mount Airy and it will be reasonably easy to arrive at a paper plan that will solve most of the physical problems of the downtown area. It will even be possible to arrive at a paper plan that will solve most of the physical problems of the downtown area. It will even be possible to arrive at a paper plan that will, generally, satisfy the downtown merchants, the planning commission, the city council and the citizenry at large, but the physical problem of turning a paper plan into a living reality is one that will tax the ingenuity and patience of every involved citizen to their limits. The development plan will always be only as good as the people that are responsible for its development. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A sweeping chronicle of Jewish life in the Tar Heel State from colonial times to the present, this beautifully illustrated volume incorporates oral histories, original historical documents, and profiles of fascinating individuals. The first comprehensive social history of its kind, Down Home demonstrates that the story of North Carolina Jews is attuned to the national story of immigrant acculturation but has a southern twist. Keeping in mind the larger southern, American, and Jewish contexts, Leonard Rogoff considers how the North Carolina Jewish experience differs from that of Jews in other southern states. He explores how Jews very often settled in North Carolina's small towns, rather than in its large cities, and he documents the reach and vitality of Jewish North Carolinians' participation in building the New South and the Sunbelt. Many North Carolina Jews were among those at the forefront of a changing South, Rogoff argues, and their experiences challenge stereotypes of a society that was agrarian and Protestant. More than 125 historic and contemporary photographs complement Rogoff's engaging epic, providing a visual panorama of Jewish social, cultural, economic, and religious life in North Carolina. This volume is a treasure to share and to keep. Published in association with the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina, Down Home is part of a larger documentary project of the same name that will include a film and a traveling museum exhibition, to be launched in June 2010.

In this social and cultural history of swimming pools in the United States, Jeff Wiltse relates how, over the years, pools have served as asylums for the urban poor, leisure resorts for the masses, and private clubs for middle-class suburbanites. As sites of race riots, shrinking swimsuits, and conspicuous leisure, swimming pools reflect many of the tensions and transformations that have given rise to modern America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Drake has skillfully woven together the various strands of the Appalachian experience into a sweeping whole. Touching upon folk traditions, health care, the environment, higher education, the role of blacks and women, and much more, Drake offers a compelling social history of a unique American region. The Appalachian region, extending from Alabama in the South up to the Allegheny highlands of Pennsylvania, has historically been characterized by its largely rural populations, rich natural resources that have fueled industry in other parts of the country, and the strong and wild, undeveloped land. The rugged geography of the region allowed Native American societies, especially the Cherokee, to flourish. Early white settlers tended to favor a self-sufficient approach to farming, contrary to the land grabbing and plantation building going on elsewhere in the South. The growth of a market economy and competition from other agricultural areas of the country sparked an economic decline of the region's rural population at least as early as 1830. The Civil War and the sometimes hostile legislation of Reconstruction made life even more difficult for rural Appalachians. Recent history of the region is marked by the corporate exploitation of resources. Regional oil, gas, and coal had attracted some industry even before the Civil War, but the postwar years saw an immense expansion of American industry, nearly all of which relied heavily on Appalachian fossil fuels, particularly coal. What was initially a boon to the region eventually brought financial disaster to many mountain people as unsafe working conditions and strip mining ravaged the land and its inhabitants. A History of Appalachia also examines pockets of urbanization in Appalachia. Chemical, textile, and other industries have encouraged the development of urban areas. At the same time, radio, television, and the internet provide residents direct links to cultures from all over the world. The author looks at the process of urbanization as it belies commonly held notions about the region's rural character.
