Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive analysis of the development of northern England and southern Scotland in the formative era of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. How did "middle Britain" come to be divided between two separate unitary kingdoms called "England" and "Scotland"? How, and how differently, was government exercised and experienced? How did people identify themselves by their languages and naming practices? What major themes can be detected in the development of ecclesiastical structures and religious culture? What can be learned about the rural and the emerging urban environments in terms of lordly exploitation and control, settlement patterns and how the landscape itself evolved? These are among the key questions addressed by the contributors, who bring to bear multi-faceted approaches to medieval "middle Britain". Above all, by pursuing similarities and differences from a comparative "transnational" perspective it becomes clearer how the "old" interacted with the "new", what was exceptional and what was not, and how far the histories of northern England and southern Scotland point to common or not so common foundations and trajectories. Keith Stringer is Professor Emeritus of Medieval British History at Lancaster University; Angus Winchester is Professor Emeritus of Local and Landscape History at Lancaster University.BR>Contributors: Richard Britnell, Dauvit Broun, Janet Burton, David Ditchburn, Philip Dixon, Piers Dixon, Fiona Edmonds, Richard Oram, Keith Stringer, Chris Tabraham, Simon Taylor, Angus J.L. It includes the 7stanes trail centre in Dumfries and Galloway, as well as cross-country routes in the Campsie Fells, Pentland Hills and Lammermuirs, the Galloway Forest, Tweed Valley, Cheviots and Lowther Hills. The routes range from 17 to 66km and are graded from moderate to very hard. Taking between 2 and 7 hours to complete, they are intended for reasonably fit mountain bikers with at least some experience. Detailed route descriptions are accompanied by 1:50,000 OS mapping, and the selected routes set out from various points across the area, including Greenock, Glentrool, Peebles and Milngavie, with good access from both Glasgow and Edinburgh. The guidebook also gives an overview of what the region's MTB trail centres have to offer, including the famous 7stanes trail centre, along with advice on equipment, maintenance and safety. Southern and Central Scotland is renowned for its superlative MTB trail centres, but the region's rolling hill country is also traversed by an extensive network of tracks, paths, forest roads and other trails providing endless possibilities for 'free range' mountain biking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stirling and Central Scotland straddles the divisions between Highland and Lowland, rural and industrial Scotland. Castles range from Stirling, its fortifications enclosing a Renaissance palace of international significance, to the strongholds of medieval magnates at Doune, Blackness and Castle Campbell, from tower houses at Clackmannan and Alloa to the Georgian barracks complex of Dumbarton. Many buildings fully explained for the first time include Kinneil House, which developed from tower, to palace of the Regent of Scotland to Restoration showhouse; and the huge spread of Callendar House, aggrandized over four centuries with many changes of dress. Other major houses include Bannockburn House, with its superb plasterwork, and the eighteenth century mansions of Strathleven House, Touch House and Robert Adam's castellated villa of Airthrey Castle. Dunblane Cathedral and Stirling's Church of the Holy Rude magnificently represent medieval churches while post-Reformation successors range from the rural simplicity of Baldernock to the sumptuously fitted Alloa West Church. The buildings of the many towns and picturesque villages are just as varied, from Stirling's medieval Old Town, to the Victorian townscapes of Alloa and Falkirk, the prosperous villadom of Bearsden and Lenzie, and the redevelopment of blitzed Clydebank. Industrial memories of the collieries, mills, shipyards and ironworks are also recalled, not least by the contrast between the workers' housing and the industrialists' mansions. Notable twentieth century buildings include the boomerang-shaped Bannockburn High School, the University of Stirling's lakeside campus and the evocative development of Lomond Shores while the twenty-first century has opened with construction of the Millennium Wheel at Falkirk.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 4th edition of The Geology of Scotland is greatly expanded from the previous edition with 34 authors contributing to 20 chapters. A new format has been adopted to provide a different perspective on the geology of Scotland. A brief introduction is followed by a chapter outlining some of the important historical aspects that in the 19th century placed Scottish geologists in the forefront of a new science. Scotland is constructed from a number of terranes that finally combined in roughly their present positions prior to about 410 million years ago. Thus the geology of each terrane is described up the time of amalgamation, providing chapters on the Southern Uplands, Midland Valley, Highlands, Grampian and Hebridean terranes. At the end of this section, a brief synthesis summarizes the events that resulted in the amalgamation of the various terranes into the present configuration. Traditional practice is followed in the description of the Old Red Sandstone, Carboniferous, Permo-Trias, Jurassic, Cretaceous, tertiary and Quaternary strata. A separate chapter covers Tertiary igneous rocks. An attempt is made to tell the story of the geological evolution of Scotland, rather than catalogue all areas and formations. Priority is given to the onshore geology, encouraging the reader to go into the field and visit some of the world-class geology on show in Scotland. The chapters are broadly-based, attempting to integrate the sedimentary and igneous histories, and summarize changes in palaeogeography and palaeoenvironments. Economic aspects are covered with chapters on Metalliferous Minerals, Bulk Resources, Coal and Hydrocarbons. A new departure is the chapter on aspects of Environmental Geology and sustainability. Additionally, this publication contains a colour section of 32 plates, illustrating aspects of Scottish Geology, as well as a coloured geological map of Scotland.
