Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wildlife of eastern Europe is one of the unexpected attractions of a region best known for its cultural assets: relatively few visitors are aware of the diversity on their holiday doorstep, from brown bears and wolves to numerous birds no longer common in the west of the continent. Accessible and beautifully illustrated, the guide will appeal both to the holidaymaker and to the serious naturalist seeking a compact volume to carry around. And after the trip, it will also make an attractive souvenir. The guide covers the wildlife of: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Kaliningrad, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia & Herzegovina.Bradt's fully illustrated wildlife guides focus on regions of the world particularly celebrated for their amazing and often unique species. With spectacular photography or exclusive watercolour drawings throughout, each visitors' guide provides an introduction to the region's principal flora and fauna alongside suggested wildlife itineraries, practical information on when to go and what to take and photography tips. Written in a deliberately engaging way, they offer something different from dry field guides, and will appeal to the interested layman as much as the wildlife devotee. Ideal as a lightweight companion to any wildlife trip they also make a handsome souvenir.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative new title from Bradt is the first of its type to focus specifically on the vast array of wildlife-watching opportunities found in Europe. Written by expert James Lowen, author of the best-selling 52 Wildlife Weekends: A Year of British Wildlife-Watching Breaks and award-winning A Summer of British Wildlife: 100 Great Days Out Watching Wildlife, this unique guide is packaged into 52 weekend-sized breaks highlighting the best of European wildlife including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, flora, butterflies, dragonflies and birds. We may think of snow-covered Antarctica, South American jungles or African savannahs as holding the world's most plenteous and special wildlife, yet Europe heaves with wildlife wonders year-round, many of which can be seen in a simple weekend break. This book suggests one wildlife-watching break, somewhere in Europe, for every weekend of the year. Want to see brown bears? Make for Finland or Slovenia. Fancy a crack at wolves? Hop on a flight to northern Spain or Italy's Abruzzo. If whales float your boat, a long weekend in Iceland, Ireland or the Bay of Biscay would suit. Orchid lovers can head to Corsica, Crete or the Costa del Sol in spring. Birdwatchers can flock to see migrating raptors in Gibraltar, great gatherings of cranes in central Spain, or vast flocks of seaduck in Arctic Norway. Then there's the wacky olm in Slovenia, cave salamanders in Sardinia and owl-flies in the Picos de Europa. Hungary's mayfly emergence is truly spectacular, as are Norway's musk oxen and Poland's bison. Stretching from the Arctic to its boundaries with Africa and Asia, Europe has enough exciting living creatures amid jaw-dropping landscapes to fill an entire lifetime of wildlife-watching. Ideal for both the experienced wildlife tourist and the novice and packed with stunning colour photos, Bradt's 52 European Wildlife Weekends shows when, where and how to see the most exciting wildlife, complete with inspiring itineraries, engaging descriptions, detailed directions and tips on how to find, identify and enjoy animals and plants. Each entry gives details on species of interest and the landscapes they inhabit, plus suggestions for extending your quick break into a longer visit. Winner of the British Guild of Travel Writers Adele Evans Award for Best Guidebook 2018.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an author with longstanding experience in the ecology of insects and birds and with a stellar academic record in molecular life sciences, this is a welcome challenge to the widely held beliefs in conventional environmental policies. Werner Kunz convincingly explains why maintaining high biodiversity in Europe depends heavily on the existence of open space and sparse ground vegetation that is neither used for intensive modern agriculture, nor eliminated by reforestation. He questions the commonly propagated opinion that nature conservation is equivalent to species protection - and shows that technical habitat design can rescue endangered species. A must-have for environmental agencies, policy makers, ecologists and all who are witnessing the current loss of species in Central Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Natura 2000 network of protected areas is the centrepiece of European Union nature policy, currently covering almost one-fifth of the EU’s entire land territory plus large marine areas. This vast EU-wide network, which aims to conserve Europe’s most valuable and threatened species and habitats, has major impacts on land use throughout all Member States of the EU. This book critically assesses the origins and implementation of the Natura 2000 network, established under the Birds Directive of 1979 and the Habitats Directive of 1992. Based on original archival research and interviews with key participants, the book records a detailed history of the origins and negotiation of Natura 2000 policy and law, with the history of EU environmental policy provided as a framework. An historical institutionalist approach is adopted, which emphasises the importance of understanding legal and policy development as processes that unfold over time. Three phases in the history of EU environmental policy are identified and described, and the history of EU nature policy is placed within the context of these three phases. Informed by this history, the author presents a comprehensive summary and assessment of the law and policy that protects Natura 2000 sites at EU level, and reviews the nature conservation outcomes for the targeted species and habitats. The book reveals how a knowledge of the history of Natura 2000 enriches our understanding of key issues such as conflicts in establishing and conserving the Natura 2000 network, EU integration in the field of nature conservation, and the future of EU nature policy.

Book excerpt: This new, thoroughly updated fifth edition of Bradt's Serbia remains the most acclaimed guide available to a country which in recent years has welcomed an increasing number of foreign tourists to discover its attractive rolling countryside, lively cities, excellent food and friendly people. Development of tourism infrastructure continues apace in Serbia and this new edition reflects all the changes and trends of recent years, including Belgrade's increasing popularity as a weekend break destination, the continued evolution and rising quality of accommodation across all price brackets in both the capital and beyond, the development of Belgrade's Savamala riverfront area, the rise in popularity of bird-watching holidays, the possibilities for wine tours, and the increase in visitors to the EXIT festival held annually in Novi Sad and to the Guca trumpet festival in central Serbia. Particularly notable since the previous edition is Serbia's dramatic improvement in English-language facilities for visitors, with many towns and cities now having tourist information centres with helpful staff, all of which are detailed in this guide. Written by an expert author, the Bradt guide to Serbia offers up-to-date background information on the country's geography, history, economy, politics and people, as well as a strong emphasis on culture and the arts - music, literature, cinema and art - and on natural history, including a thorough overview of Serbia's best wildlife sites. Comprehensive and up-to-date listings of the best places to stay and eat according to budget are covered, along with reliable public transport information to enable you to travel independently with confidence. This guide recommends facilities and places of interest that will hold appeal for all types of visitor - from impecunious young travellers seeking a fun-filled city break to older visitors who prefer a slower pace and wish to immerse themselves in local tradition. Despite burgeoning interest, Serbia remains one of the least known corners of Europe. Belgrade and second city Novi Sad are lively, cosmopolitan and welcoming, while rural Serbia, with its hidden monasteries and gorgeous countryside, is an undiscovered gem. With the Bradt guide you will be able to discover all this intriguing country has to offer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide describes 20 walks and 7 short treks in Croatia. Around half the routes focus on the striking limestone ranges of Gorski kotar and Velebit, which form part of the Dinaric Alps, but there are also routes in Dalmatia and on the Istrian peninsula, as well as four walks centred around the capital, Zagreb. They are easily accessible from the coastal resorts and main cities such as Zagreb, Rijeka and Split, and the guide includes advice on the most convenient bases. Showcasing Croatia's majestic scenery, the routes range from short, easy walks to more challenging treks and mountain traverses. Step-by-step route description is accompanied by clear mapping, and there are notes highlighting where refreshments are available on or near the trails. The treks make use of mountain huts and shelters, details of which are provided, although it is also possible to camp. The guide also includes information on local points of interest, fascinating overviews of Croatian history, plants and wildlife and a comprehensive English-Croatian glossary. Many routes take in the dramatic karst landscapes and peaks of Croatia's mountains; others explore the country's stunning national and nature parks - including the breathtaking UNESCO-listed Plitvice Lakes; yet more visit local attractions and highlights, such as Vrelo Cave and Pazin's castle and gorge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook describes a range of 17 day-walks and multi-day treks throughout the mountains of Montenegro. Routes range from short (2km) walks through to multi-day treks throughout this fascinating region. Some routes are circular and some linear, with variants and extensions described so that you can plan a day walk or longer trip. The guide also includes generous background information, covering mountain huts and shelters, travel to and within the country, history and language, as well as what to expect in the various mountains and National Parks the routes explore. The Dinaric Alps are some of the wildest, most spectacular, and least visited in Europe. But they are easily accessible, and many areas have well-marked trails. They present an opportunity to travel through outstandingly beautiful and remarkably unspoilt natural scenery, which sees few visitors.
