Book Synopsis Atlas of the Centipedes of Britain and Ireland by : A. D. Barber
Download or read book Atlas of the Centipedes of Britain and Ireland written by A. D. Barber and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Centipedes Atlas atlas covers all 55 species, including species only occurring in heated greenhouses and buildings. Also featuring are species best regarded as 'doubtful', as well as with chance introductions. Geographic coverage extends to all of Great Britain and Ireland, plus the Channel Islands and Isle of Man. Centipedes (Arthropoda: Chilopoda) are widespread and common generalist carnivores. They occur in a wide variety of habitats, and at altitudes ranging from sea level to over 1000 metres. Some species are more or less confined to semi-natural habitats, including some seashore specialists. In contrast others favour highly modified sites such as towns and gardens. Like previous atlases in the series, species distribution maps show records at 10km square resolution. Species maps have four date classes. Each species account describes status in Great Brtain, Ireland and elsewhere. There are also habitat, altitude and seasonal data for all species with more than 30 records. Atlas data come from the Centipede Recording Scheme of the British Myriapod and Isopod Group. A special feature of this Recording Scheme is that habitat data have routinely been collected since 1971. As a result there is now a rich resource of habitat data stretching back over 50 years, with over 15,000 individual records. This new atlas is a comprehensive update to the 1988 provisional atlas. As well as using all pre-1988 and subsequent records up to the end of 2018. In total there are almost 50,000 records. This work also includes a review of habitat data for the three centipede orders: Geophilomorpha, Scolopendromorpha and Lithobiomorpha.
Book Synopsis The Pelagic Dictionary of Natural History of the British Isles by : Dr. Peter Jarvis
Download or read book The Pelagic Dictionary of Natural History of the British Isles written by Dr. Peter Jarvis and published by Pelagic Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2020-01-06 with total page 2241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique collection of concise but detailed information on 10,000 animals, plants, fungi and algae of the British Isles. Every species with an English common name is included. The compendium is in two parts. The first, smaller part, looks at various terms that people interested in natural history may come across. The second provides information on individual species or species groups, with entries on those with English (common) names, as well as selected families, orders, classes, etc. In the case of marine organisms, entries are given for intertidal and subtidal invertebrate species, and generally speaking for fish species that might be observed inshore. Indication is often given on distribution as well as whether a species is common, scarce or something in between. For some species a note is made of population size and trends. Comments are made where appropriate on etymology, both of the English name and the binomial. No other natural history dictionary or cognate publication relating to the British Isles is as comprehensive in taxonomic cover.

Book Synopsis Key Works to the Fauna and Flora of the British Isles and North-western Europe by : Reginald William Sims
Download or read book Key Works to the Fauna and Flora of the British Isles and North-western Europe written by Reginald William Sims and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1988 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal works for the identification of all living organisms - animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, and viruses - reported from the British I sles and north-western Europe are listed in this book. The new edition has been entirely rewritten by a team of specialists. It presents a succinct selection of the relevant recent and standard literature, for use when identifying the living organisms of north-western Europe and the adjacent shelf seas. Much of the value of the work lies in its application over a wide area, helping biologists to identify rare or new records of species commonly reported in other countries. Each reference is listed with the title appearing first and the author name(s) and date appearing last, making references to a particular topic easier to find. The book is arranged under the major groups, for faster identification of specimens. With the librarian's advisory work in mind, details are provided of general guides to the fauna and flora, and the faunal lists of marine biological stations. Biologists (professional and amateur) who need to identify any living organism found in north-western Europe, and taxonomists and ecologists in particular will find this book very useful.
