Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodism in the City of St. Catherines, Ont: Centennial Anniversary HE history of Methodism in St. Catharines is a large part of the history of Methodism in the Niagara Peninsula, and the history of St. Paul Street Church is a large part of the history of Methodism in St. Catharines. An adequate narrative of the beginning and growth of Methodism in our city is, unfortunately, an impossibility in a bro chure of this size, but those who feel interested should read the care fully prepared sketch by the late Rev. Dr. Gee, published ih 1900 under the title of A Souvenir. In the following very brief story of St. Paul Street Church noth ing more than the bare outlines can be given. The writer is sorely tempted to enter into interesting details of men and events, but these must perforce be omitted, as space will not permit the luxury of expansion. Methodism in Canada was introduced in the last quarter of the 18th Century, and its introduction we owe to our neighbours across the border; for Canada was a mission field of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the United States, and the story of the zeal, privations, and success of the early missionaries is one of thrilling interest. The heroism of the men who made their way in toilsome journeys from one little settlement in the wilderness to another, carrying the gospel to those who were struggling with the great hardships of pioneer life, has not been surpassed in any mission field, and no account Of Cana dian colonization is complete which omits the part played by Methodist missionaries in its development. So far as the Niagara Peninsula is concerned the honour of introducing Methodism is usually given to Major Geo. Neal, who preached and formed a class in 1788. But when we remember that immigration into this district from the United States began before that date, it seems reasonable to suppose that Methodist families had found their way here before Major Neal came among us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian Methodism: Its Epochs and Characteristics By a sad necessity it falls to the lot of the present writer, as Editor of the periodical in which these essays first appeared, to prepare a preface to the volume in which they are now collected. From frequent and intimate intercourse with their lamented Author we can affirm that controversy was not the object with which they were written. Being invited thereto by the formal request of the London, Toronto, and Montreal Conferences, Dr. Ryerson desired to place on record certain documentary evidence of which he was in possession, as to the eventful history of Methodism in what is now known as Old Canada. Of those stirring events, in which he played so prominent a part, it is more than probable that the honoured writer of these essays could speak with greater fullness of information than any other man. He wrote, not to revive dead issues or buried animosities, but rather, by a calm appeal to reason and to historic facts, to allay them forever. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Century of Methodism in Canada, Vol. 2 This Volume continues the record of Methodist doings in Canada from 1840 to the grand Union of 1883. In the closing chapters will be found welcome contributions from the pens of the Rev. Robert Cade, D. D., the Rev. James M. Simpson, and the late Rev. George Webber, regarding their several Churches. All the Uniting Churches are also represented in our comprehensive portrait gallery, according to their numbers at the time of Union. The ministers are placed according to the date of their entrance. The women as well as the men who were known in active church work before the close of this volume have here at least a representation. This was done under the oversight of seven wise men, and their desire to be liberal taxed the generosity of the Publishers to the utmost limit - "a hundred and fifty and three" - though they would have gladly included hundreds more, had it been possible. We trust these will be accepted simply as representatives of "the great multitude which no man can number." In Volume I. a few corrections are necessary: The engraving, "Grave of Paul and Barbara Heck," was intended to face page 46, where the place of burial - Augusta - is correctly stated. On page 63, 3rd line, read Madden; page 119, last line, James should be Thomas; page 216, near the bottom - "On December 18th a meeting was held at Saltfleet attended by David Culp," etc. For careful reading of Ms. the Author is very specially indebted to the Rev. Geo. H. Cornish, L.L.D. With thanks to God for life and health to finish this work, it is now committed to the members and friends of the Methodist Church, as an appreciation of the character and work of the Church, and an earnest effort to tell to our own and succeeding generations something of what the Lord has done. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Past and Present: Or a Description of Persons and Events Connected With Canadian Methodism for the Last Forty Years About twelve years ago I was in the receipt, monthly, of the Ladies' Repository and Gatherings of the West; and felt myself much interested in the sketchy and memorial part of it. I naturally thought, "Why should not similar memorials be preserved of what God has done by the instrumentality of Methodism in Canada?" During that year, at several intervals of leisure, mostly at night, after being wearied out with severe studies, a few of the following sketches, substantially, were thrown off - although without any definite decision about publication in any form. My occupation of an invalid station, about eight years later, afforded me leisure to add a few more; when all of those which related to deceased persons in my reminiscences, to the number of twenty-six, were given to the public in the columns of the Christian Guardian, over the signature of "A Voice from the Past" - to test what reception matter of that description would receive. So far as I learned any thing about them, they were regarded with some favor. Relief from the full amount of pulpit work, about a year after, by the presence and labors, in my next station, of the Rev. James Caughey, gave me time to retouch them; the rest I had by me; and I then arranged them pretty much in the order they now assume, with the persuasion that some day they might see the light. Mr. C - encouraged me to have them published; still I hesitated, mostly because I thought they would scarcely make a sizable book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hundred Years of Richmond Methodism: The Story as Told at the Centennial Celebration of 1899 While it is to be regretted that many good things spoken at the Centennial have not found a place in these pages, it will be readily perceived that the publi cation of all the addresses would have destroyed the unity of the volume and neutralized its historical flavor. The main object has been not to tell the story of the Centennial celebration, but rather to record the deeds, principles and methods which made such a celebration possible.
