Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial History of Cincinnati and Representative Citizens, Vol. 1 The task of writing an account of so limited a portion of the earth as a single city does not in itself seem a very difficult one. Only those who have attempted it can appreciate the amount of labor such a task involves and the number of omissions and errors that must necessarily creep into such a work. These speak for themselves, and it is not necessary to call attention to them beyond expressing regret that they will be undoubtedly found in this volume as in others of its class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cincinnati, the Queen City, 1788-1912, Vol. 4 The death of Judge Longworth occurred January 18, 1890, when he was in the forty-sixth year of his age. Few men of his years attain so distinguished a position at the bar. He was fearless in attack because his position was based upon a comprehensive knowledge of the law, and a remarkable discernment enabled him to readily understand the weak points in an adversary's cause. However, he was not learned in the law alone. He possessed mechanical skill and was equally proficient in music. Few have equal knowledge of the writings of standard authors and his love of poetry was a paramount force in his life. His acquaintance with the classics was most wide and his translation of Electra, while preserving the pith of the original, makes Greek poetry readable even in the English language. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of James, John, and Hamilton Armstrong, three sons of a yeoman farmer living on the Pennsylvania frontier at the outset of the American Revolution. James and John joined the Continental Army in 1776, rose from the ranks to become officers, and served until the army was disbanded in 1783. Hamilton remained home to work the farm, protect the family, and serve in militia and “ranger” units to defend the frontier from repeated attacks from hostile Indian tribes. Their combined wartime experiences encompassed almost the totality of the American Revolution, from Canada in the north to South Carolina in the south and along the western frontier. James and John fought in most of the major battles of the revolution, including Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, Guilford Courthouse, Eutaw Springs, and Yorktown, where they distinguished themselves in the eyes of generals like the Marquis de Lafayette, Mad Anthony Wayne, Light- Horse Harry Lee, Nathanael Greene, and George Washington.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cincinnati in the Centennial Celebration of the Inauguration of the Government of the United States Under the Constitution The Cincinnati are particularly interested in the due observance of this Cen tenmial because the only political principle incorporated in their Institution found expression in the Constitution of the United States, and thenceforward the Order devoted itself to its domestic concerns. The history of the Cincinnati, however, shows how earnestly and potentially they strove to secure the formation and adoption of the Constitution, and when their President General had been inaugurated as President of the United States, they told him, in their congratulations on the following 4th of July, that the Constitution of the United States was what they had fought for in the Revolution. From 1783 to 1789, the Order of the Cincinnati was the only organization in the United States devoted to promoting and cherishing between the respective States that Union and National Honor, so essentially necessary to their happiness and to the future dignity of the American Empire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1833, Edward G. W. and Frances Parke Butler moved to their newly constructed plantation house, Dunboyne, on the banks of the Mississippi River near the village of Bayou Goula. Their experiences at Dunboyne over the next forty years demonstrated the transformations that many land-owning southerners faced in the nineteenth century, from the evolution of agricultural practices and commerce, to the destruction wrought by the Civil War and the transition from slave to free labor, and finally to the social, political, and economic upheavals of Reconstruction. In this comprehensive biography of the Butlers, David D. Plater explores the remarkable lives of a Louisiana family during one of the most tumultuous periods in American history. Born in Tennessee to a celebrated veteran of the American Revolution, Edward Butler pursued a military career under the mentorship of his guardian, Andrew Jackson, and, during a posting in Washington, D.C., met and married a grand-niece of George Washington, Frances Parke Lewis. In 1831, he resigned his commission and relocated Frances and their young son to Iberville Parish, where the couple began a sugar cane plantation. As their land holdings grew, they amassed more enslaved laborers and improved their social prominence in Louisiana’s antebellum society. A staunch opponent of abolition, Butler voted in favor of Louisiana’s withdrawal from the Union at the state’s Secession Convention. But his actions proved costly when the war cut off agricultural markets and all but destroyed the state’s plantation economy, leaving the Butlers in financial ruin. In 1870, with their plantation and finances in disarray, the Butlers sold Dunboyne and resettled in Pass Christian, Mississippi, where they resided in a rental cottage with the financial support of Edward J. Gay, a wealthy Iberville planter and their daughter-in-law’s father. After Frances died in 1875, Edward Butler moved in with his son’s family in St. Louis, where he remained until his death in 1888. Based on voluminous primary source material, The Butlers of Iberville Parish, Louisiana offers an intimate picture of a wealthy nineteenth-century family and the turmoil they faced as a system based on the enslavement of others unraveled.
