Book excerpt: The Centennial Farm Recognition Program was a one-time effort conducted by the Washington State Department of Agriculture as a part of the state's Centennial celebration. This addendum includes profiles of 21 farms, identified in 1989, that met the criteria but did not meet the Washington Centennial Farm project deadline. Since the applications were received late, the Agency requested a revised application and would include the information in the Project's permanent records, although not in the Centennial Farm Book. With the 2014 project to reconnect with the original centennial farms, these additional farms were included as a separate addendum. The addendum farm information is current to 1989.

Download or read book Montgomery written by Jo Fredell Higgins and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Montgomery was originally known as Graytown, named after founding father Daniel S. Gray. In the autumn of 1836, he moved his family from New York and built the first frame house in the village. His industrious nature produced in quick order a store, foundry, and reaper and header shop. Montgomery also had two stores and a stone depot for the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad. A large cheese factory was built in 1874. From the early settlers who came for the prized farmland and the Fox River amenities to the present-day residents, the village of Montgomery continues to thrive and prosper as it celebrates its 175th anniversary in 2010.

Book excerpt: Anna Long Hoard stood at Eberhard Cemetery, watching her husband's casket lowered into his grave. Kellis Hoard died by mistaking sulphuric acid for cider, a mystery never solved. Kellis was Anna's rock and the man who farmed Anna's legacy farm. She had no sons. Could she keep the farm? Generations before her lived the every-man story of American settlers. Like thousands of pioneers who left the East Coast after the Revolutionary War in search of a better life, the Longs fought weather and wild country to move to a state in the Old Northwest Territory. Reuben Long, the patriarch, and his children and grandchildren fought to keep the Indiana farm in the family. If Mother Nature did her part, permanent land ownership meant economic security, a ready supply of food, and one of the few wealth-building opportunities in the country. Keeping the family farm meant survival and security. And their journey was anything but easy.
