This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1919 marks a high point in the world power and prestige of Western democracy. World War I was ended, and the victory belonged to the democratic states. Theirs was the sober task-and the unique opportunity-of formulating a settlement that would guarantee impartial justice and preserve the peace. Dr. Tillman examines here the documentary account of Anglo-American diplomatic relations during this critical period. He shows the interaction of personalities in both governments, the patterns of cooperation and conflict as they negotiated major issues of war and of peace, and the political repercussions in both England and America that led either to compromise or to defeat of some of the best purposes of the Versailles Treaty. Originally published in 1961. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book excerpt: Images of America: Bristol celebrates the history of the town known as "A Good Place to Live." Joseph A. Anderson bought land on the Virginia-Tennessee border from his father-in-law, Rev. James King, and founded Bristol in 1852. Just four years later, the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad came to Bristol, and the town became a major trading center of the Appalachian region. During the Civil War, Bristol was a vital railway link between the North and the South, and it later became known as the birthplace of country music. Readers are sure to enjoy viewing over 200 vintage photographs of the train station, the Carter Family, the King family, Virginia Intermont College, and King College, as well as homes and people from all walks of life. The S. E. Massengill drug manufacturing company shown on the cover is among the highlighted industries.

Book excerpt: Arkansas's Old State House, arguably the most famous building in the state, was conceived during the territorial period and has served through statehood. A History of Arkansas's Old State House traces the history of the architecture and purposes of the remarkable building. The history begins with Gov. John Pope's ideas for a symbolic state house for Arkansas and continues through the construction years and an expansion in 1885. After years of deterioration, the building was abandoned by the state government, and the Old State House then became a medical school and office building. Kwas traces the subsequent fight for the building's preservation on to its use today as a popular museum of Arkansas history and culture. Brief biographies of secretaries of state, preservationists, caretakers, and others are included, and the book is generously illustrated with early and seldom-seen photographs, drawings, and memorabilia.

Book excerpt: Politician and law professor Geoffrey Palmer recounts the events and forces that shaped him in this memoir, as well as his many adventures in reforming a wide range of institutions, laws, and policies. Reform has been a recurring theme throughout Geoffrey Palmer's life, not only during his career in politics and as a Prime Minister, but also as a law professor and law practitioner. He speaks of his early life and family background and the eventful lives of his pioneering ancestors. He examines the intellectual influences on his thinking, particularly the nature of his education both in New Zealand and the United States, and chronicles his life according to the issues: accident compensation, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Law Commission, liquor law, Maori issues, parliamentary reform, the Resource Management Act, law and order, prisons, and local government reform. Meticulously detailed and engagingly written, "Reform" is essential reading for anyone interested in New Zealand legal and political history.

Book excerpt: Since its establishment in 1844, Taylor County has known all too well the cycle of growth, decline, and hard-won renewal. Industries such as the railroad, as well as glass, pottery, and brick factories, once provided employment and opportunity for local families and spurred the development of the region. But when these businesses were lost and economic hardship followed, local residents fought mightily to revitalize their community and, through persistence and heart, made Taylor County a welcoming home to new generations of residents. Through the ups and downs of over a century, Taylor County has struggled and triumphed, making its own history in small towns and rural communities. Taylor County, the location of both of West Virginia's national cemeteries, was the site of the first Union casualty during the Civil War. The county's railroad heritage played a prominent role, and the town of Grafton once served as a railway hub and destination for city travelers. Perhaps the county's most influential native was Anna Jarvis, who founded Mother's Day when she initiated a church service in Grafton in 1908. This historic church and Jarvis's birthplace are now local landmarks and honor the vision and determination of the woman who created an international holiday.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of a uniquely Quaker style in architecture, dress, and domestic interiors is a subject with which scholars have long grappled, since Quakers have traditionally held both an appreciation for high-quality workmanship and a distrust of ostentation. Early Quakers, or members of the Society of Friends, who held "plainness" or "simplicity" as a virtue, were also active consumers of fine material goods. Through an examination of some of the material possessions of Quaker families in America during the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries, the contributors to Quaker Aesthetics draw on the methods of art, social, religious, and public historians as well as folklorists to explore how Friends during this period reconciled their material lives with their belief in the value of simplicity. In early America, Quakers dominated the political and social landscape of the Delaware Valley, and, because this region held a position of political and economic strength, the Quakers were tightly connected to the transatlantic economy. Given this vantage, they had easy access to the latest trends in fashion and business. Detailing how Quakers have manufactured, bought, and used such goods as clothing, furniture, and buildings, the essays in Quaker Aesthetics reveal a much more complicated picture than that of a simple people with simple tastes. Instead, the authors show how, despite the high quality of their material lives, the Quakers in the past worked toward the spiritual simplicity they still cherish.
