Book Synopsis Yale Law School and the Sixties by : Laura Kalman
Download or read book Yale Law School and the Sixties written by Laura Kalman and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006-05-18 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of the modern Yale Law School is deeply intertwined with the story of a group of students in the 1960s who worked to unlock democratic visions of law and social change that they associated with Yale's past and with the social climate in which they lived. During a charged moment in the history of the United States, activists challenged senior professors, and the resulting clash pitted young against old in a very human story. By demanding changes in admissions, curriculum, grading, and law practice, Laura Kalman argues, these students transformed Yale Law School and the future of American legal education. Inspired by Yale's legal realists of the 1930s, Yale law students between 1967 and 1970 spawned a movement that celebrated participatory democracy, black power, feminism, and the counterculture. After these students left, the repercussions hobbled the school for years. Senior law professors decided against retaining six junior scholars who had witnessed their conflict with the students in the early 1970s, shifted the school's academic focus from sociology to economics, and steered clear of critical legal studies. Ironically, explains Kalman, students of the 1960s helped to create a culture of timidity until an imaginative dean in the 1980s tapped into and domesticated the spirit of the sixties, helping to make Yale's current celebrity possible.

Book Synopsis Ghosts of Ogden, Brigham City and Logan by : Jennifer Jones
Download or read book Ghosts of Ogden, Brigham City and Logan written by Jennifer Jones and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales of fascinating pasts and spirited encounters in northern Utah’s spookiest locations from the author and founder of The Dead History. From Ogden up to Logan, northern Utah claims more than its fair share of restless spirits. The Ben Lomond Hotel was rumored to be the site of a honeymooning bride who tragically drowned in her bathtub, only to have her distraught son consequently commit suicide in the adjoining room. The iconic Union Station still houses passengers in the form of apparitions and disembodied voices. The owner of the Shooting Star Saloon purportedly continues to monkey around with the jukebox and a phantom piano, while Crystal Hot Springs hosts a bevy of spirits, including a crying child, a stabbing victim and multiple pool-related fatalities. Author Jennifer Jones unearths the stories behind the ghosts that continue to preside over their final destinations. “As far as we are aware, Jennifer is the only person that is documenting locations in Northern Utah as well as telling the stories of people in graves with headstones she finds interesting . . . Whether you want it to or not, paranormal and history go hand in hand.” —The New Utah Podcast

Book Synopsis A Very Social Time by : Karen V. Hansen
Download or read book A Very Social Time written by Karen V. Hansen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karen Hansen's richly anecdotal narrative explores the textured community lives of New England's working women and men—both white and black—n the half century before the Civil War. Her use of diaries, letters, and autobiographies brings their voices to life, making this study an extraordinary combination of historical research and sociological interpretation. Hansen challenges conventional notions that women were largely relegated to a private realm and men to a public one. A third dimension—the social sphere—also existed and was a critical meeting ground for both genders. In the social worlds of love, livelihood, gossip, friendship, and mutual assistance, working people crossed ideological gender boundaries. The book's rare collection of original writings reinforces Hansen's arguments and also provides an intimate glimpse into antebellum New England life. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact.
