Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Centenary College begins just a few years after the Civil War. Tested by fire in 1899, it evolved from a coeducational Methodist preparatory school and collegiate institute to an all-girls' school in 1910, later becoming a junior college for women in 1940. In 1976, Centenary transformed into a four-year women's college. Men returned to campus in 1988 as the college became northwestern New Jersey's only four-year coeducational institution. In the 1990s, graduate programs and off-campus accelerated degree programs were created to meet the needs of a new generation of students. Centenary's history is remarkably preserved in its extensive archives, which contain thousands of historic photographs and documents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centenary College of Louisiana began as a public institution known as the College of Louisiana on February 18, 1825, and has enjoyed a long and distinguished history. The years have brought a multitude of changes to the school--the name has changed, the location has changed, and the student population has changed. However, what remains steadfast at Centenary is a commitment to the highest standards of academic excellence, and an environment that fosters growth and achievement. Within these pages, students, alumni, faculty, and friends of the college will discover the Centenary of the past--the early days in Jackson, Louisiana, the devastation of the Civil War, the move to the Shreveport campus, and the championship football team that once was. Vintage photographs of the school's founders and supporters, the campuses, and the students will evoke memories of years past and reflect the traditions that continue at Centenary today. Accompanied by informative captions, the photographs include aerial views of the physical layout of the school, early sporting events, academic settings, and notable figures who contributed to the institution as graduates, teachers, and dynamic leaders.

Book excerpt: Marcel Mauss, successor of Emile Durkheim and one-time teacher of Claude Levi-Strauss, continues to inspire social scientists across various disciplines. Only selected texts of Mauss's work have been translated into English, but of these, some, as for instance his "Essay on the Gift," have proved of key significance for the development of anthropology internationally. Recently and starting in France, the interest in Mauss's work has increased noticeably as witnessed by several reassessments of its relevance to current social theory. This collection of original essays is the first to introduce the English-language reader to the current re-evaluation of his ideas in continental Europe. Themes include the post-structuralist appraisal of "exchange", the anthropology of the body, practical techniques, gesture systems, the notions of substance, materiality, and the social person. There are fresh insights into comparative politics and history, modern forms of charity, and new readings of some political and historical aspects of Mauss's work that bear on the analysis of regions such as Africa and the Middle East, relatively neglected by the Durkheimian school and by structuralism. This volume is a timely tribute to mark the centenary of Mauss' early work and confirms the continuing relevance of his ideas.

Book excerpt: This much-awaited volume uncovers the long-lost pages of the major African multilingual newspaper, Abantu-Batho. Founded in 1912 by African National Congress (ANC) convenor Pixley Seme, with assistance from the Swazi Queen, it was published up until 1931, attracting the cream of African politicians, journalists and poets Mqhayi, Nontsisi Mgqweth, and Grendon. In its pages burning issues of the day were articulated alongside cultural by-ways. The People's Paper - comprising both essays and an anthology - explores the complex movements and individuals that emerged in the almost twenty years of its publication. The essays contribute rich, new material to provide clearer insights into South African politics and intellectual life. The anthology unveils a judicious selection of never-before published columns from the paper spanning every year of its life and drawn from repositories on three continents. Abantu-Batho had a regional and international focus, and by examining all these dynamics across boundaries and disciplines, The People's Paper transcends established historiographical frontiers to fill a lacuna that scholars have long lamented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of The Noma Award for Publishing in Africa. The jury cited the book as "...no ordinary history book. It is a fascinating story, elegantly told by a meticulous historian in a beautifully produced volume. The author, a major historian and political figure, skilfully presents the story of the making of modern Ghana through the life history of one school." The author illuminates how western education has refined and changed the destiny of Ghanaian families from the school, and the contribution of the school to nation building through the excellence of the products of the school. The history of the school is set against the background of the history of Ghana in general; and a completely new light is thrown on a turning point in Ghana's history - the 1948 riots and their aftermath.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to bring together an interdisciplinary, theoretically engaged and global perspective on the First World War through the lens of historical and cultural geography. Reflecting the centennial interest in the conflict, the collection explores the relationships between warfare and space, and pays particular attention to how commemoration is connected to spatial elements of national identity, and processes of heritage and belonging. Venturing beyond military history and memory studies, contributors explore conceptual contributions of geography to analyse the First World War, as well as reflecting upon the imperative for an academic discussion on the War’s centenary. This book explores the War’s impact in more unexpected theatres, blurring the boundary between home and fighting fronts, investigating the experiences of the war amongst civilians and often overlooked combatants. It also critically examines the politics of hindsight in the post-war period, and offers an historical geographical account of how the First World War has been memorialised within ‘official’ spaces, in addition to those overlooked and often undervalued ‘alternative spaces’ of commemoration. This innovative and timely text will be key reading for students and scholars of the First World War, and more broadly in historical and cultural geography, social and cultural history, European history, Heritage Studies, military history and memory studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military force projection is the self-reliant capacity to strike from mainland ports, bases and airfields to protect Australia's sovereignty as well as more distant national interests. Force projection is not just a flex of military muscle in times of emergency or the act of dispatching forces. It is a cycle of force preparation, command, deployment, protection, employment, sustainment, rotation, redeployment and reconstitution. If the Australian Defence Force consistently gets this cycle wrong, then there is something wrong with Australia's defence. This monograph is a force projection audit of four Australian regional force projections in the late 1980s and the 1990s -- valid measures of competence. It concludes that Australia is running out of luck and time. The Rudd Government has commissioned a new Defence White paper. This monograph is Exhibit A for change.
