Book excerpt: Detailed mapping and structural analysis of upper Proterozoic and Paleozoic rocks in the CP Hills of the Nevada Test Site, together with analysis of published maps and cross sections and a reconnaissance of regional structural relations indicate that the CP thrust of Barnes and Poole (1968) actually comprises two separate, oppositely verging Mesozoic thrust systems: (1) the west-vergent CP thrust which is well exposed in the CP Hills and at Mine Mountain, and (2) the east-vergent Belted Range thrust located northwest of Yucca Flat. West-vergence of the CP thrust is indicated by large scale west-vergent recumbent folds in both its hangingwall and footwall and by the fact that the CP thrust ramps up section through hangingwall strata toward the northwest. Regional structural relations indicate that the CP thrust forms part of a narrow sigmoidal belt of west-vergent folding and thrusting traceable for over 180 km along strike. The Belted Range thrust represents earlier Mesozoic deformation that was probably related to the Last Chance thrust system in southeastern California, as suggested by earlier workers. A pre-Tertiary reconstruction of the Cordilleran fold and thrust belt in the region between the NTS and the Las Vegas Range bears a close resemblance to other regions of the Cordillera and has important implications for the development of hinterland-vergent deformation as well as for the probable magnitude of Tertiary extension north of Las Vegas Valley. Subsequent to Mesozoic deformation, the CP Hills were disrupted by at least two episodes of Tertiary extensional deformation: (1) an earlier episode represented by pre-middle Miocene low-angle normal faults, and (2) a later, post-11 Ma episode of high-angle normal faulting. Both episodes of extension were related to regional deformation, the latter of which has resulted in the present basin and range topography of the NTS region.

Book excerpt: The Maria Fold and Thrust Belt (MFTB) and Colorado River Extensional Corridor (CREC) were the sites of atypically extreme compression in Mesozoic time and extension in Cenozoic time, respectively. The orientations of these deformational structures are at odds with the Sevier and Laramide thrust belts and the Basin and Range Extensional Province surrounding these areas, a fact that remains largely unexplained. Data pertaining to metamorphic grade, deformational structures, and plutonism are compiled and reported in order to characterize compression and metamorphism. Field data on the 18.6 Ma Peach Spring Tuff are collected and presented and data on cooling ages are compiled in order to characterize extension. It is suggested that high metamorphic temperatures and ductile compressional structures are related to Late Cretaceous S-type plutonism; furthermore, it is suggested that later extension is related to earlier metamorphism and compression. It is demonstrated that the spread in attitudes of the Peach Spring Tuff correlates well with the degree of post- 18.6 Ma extension. Finally, a favored model is presented for the Mesozoic-Cenozoic evolution of the MFTB and CREC.

This excursion will present an overview of the stratigraphy, structure, and tectonic evolution of the margin of early Mesozoic North America in the Great Basin and of terranes tectonically accreted above and against this margin. Exposures to be visited will show the following features: 1) the Golconda allochthon, a tract of oceanic Paleozoic rocks that was thrust some 100 km across the edge of Triassic North America; 2) shelfal and platformal lower Mesozoic strata that unconformably cover the Golconda allochthon; 3) basinal lower Mesozoic strata that accumulated seaward of the inherited continental edge; 4) Mesozoic and Paleozoic arc volcanics; and 5) Jurassic and Cretaceous foreland structures developed in all the preceding rocks after accretion of terranes had left the early Mesozoic sialic margin well inboard of the active convergent margin. This guide begins with introductions to the neotectonic and Phanerozoic paleotectonic evolutions of the Great Basin. Thereafter, its contents are organized in sequence with field trip stops which are as follows [route map in Figs. 5 and 6]: Day 1. Battle Mt. Golconda allochthon. Day 2. Tobin, Stillwater, and southern Humboldt Ranges. Stratigraphy of platform to basin transition of Triassic cover, Jurassic foreland thrusting; 1915 Pleasant Valley earthquake scarp. Day 3. Sand Springs and Paradise Ranges. Terranes of volcanogenic Triassic and Paleozoic rocks structurally outboard of parautochthonous lower Mesozoic basinal and shelf edge rocks. Days 4 and 5. Mina and Candelaria. North-south traverse across structurally condensed Early Triassic collision zone of exotic Paleozoic arc, Golconda allochthon plus serpentinite melange, Golconda foreland basin strata on Early Triassic North America; these units were covered by Middle and Upper Triassic strata and imbricated with the cover in late Mesozoic foreland thrusting. Day 6. Yerington. Stratigraphy and structure of possibly oldest continental magmatic arc rocks in western Great Basin.
