Book excerpt: Excerpt from Power of Art This book (now published posthumously) is the fruit of my husband's lifelong interest in the arts and his belief in their dynamic power to mold the character of peoples and civilizations. He had a deep conviction that greater emphasis on the arts and aesthetic qualities in our homes, our schools, our churches and other institutions of everyday life might well lead us to a new Golden Age. A short time before his death last summer he committed to my care the manuscript, which he had completed except for the final checking and editing. In its preparation for publication I have received invaluable help from many friends. Among those who read portions of the proof and assisted in checking data were Professors D.Foster, M.Hayes, R.W. Holmes and Mrs. Louise Holmes, K.M. Lynch, F.D. Reed, A. L.Snell, A.G. Stokey, and L.S. Stevenson - all of Mount Holyoke College; also Professor F.Saunders of Harvard University and my cousin. Colonel A.S. Meek. Professor Frederick H.Cramer, Mrs. Elizabeth Cramer and Professor Ellen D.Ellis of Mount Holyoke College gave most generously of their valuable time and labor in reading the various sets of proofs, in large part or in their entirety, and in tracking down those elusive A.A.s and typographical curiosities (which seem to spring up overnight like toadstools to surprise and confound one). To them I am also deeply indebted for many valuable and constructive suggestions, I should like to express my appreciation for various kinds of help to Mr. Whitney Darrow and Dr. Henry Goddard Leach (Princeton classmates of my husband); to Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln Cromwell of New York; to Miss Flora Belle Ludington, Librarian at Mount Holyoke College, and Miss W.D. Stephens of Philadelphia; also to Mrs. Joseph Ledden and Miss Grace Perkinson. Professor Roger Holmes most kindly consented to perform the arduous task of making the index, for which I am deeply grateful. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This intriguing work explores the world of three amate artists. A native tradition, all of their painting is done in Mexico, yet, the finished product is sold almost exclusively to wealthy American art buyers. Cowen examines this cultural interaction between Mexico and the United States to see how globalization shapes the lives and the work of the artists and their families. The story of these three artists reveals that this exchange simultaneously creates economic opportunities for the artists, but has detrimental effects on the village. A view of the daily village life of three artists connected to the larger art world, this book should be of particular interest to those in the fields of cultural economics, Latino studies, economic anthropology and globalization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This encyclopedia is a biographical dictionary of some 1,000 women artists of the American West. The product of a twenty-year, coast-to-coast research project by authors Phil Kovinick and Marian Yoshiki-Kovinick, it offers accurate, concise introductions to women painters, graphic artists, and sculptors, all of whom achieved recognition as depictors of Western subjects between the 1840s and 1980. Their styles range from representationalism to early modernism, while their works depict everything from bold landscapes and scenes of intensive action to studies of Native Americans, pioneers, ranchers, farmers, wildlife, and flora. Each entry in the encyclopedia features the salient facts of the artist's life and career, with attention to her work with Western subject matter. Many of the entries also contain a selected list of the artist's exhibitions, current locations of her work in public collections, pertinent references, and a black-and-white example of her work. An overview of the history of women in western art complements the biographical entries.

Book excerpt: We live in an era of aesthetics. Art has become both pervasive and powerful – it is displayed not only in museums and galleries but also on the walls of corporations and it is increasingly fused with design. But what makes art so powerful, and in what does its power consist? According to a widespread view, the power of art – its beauty – lies in the eye of the beholder. What counts as art appears to be a function of individual acts of evaluation supported by powerful institutions. On this account, the power of art stems from a force that is not itself aesthetic, such as the art market and the financial power of speculators. Art expresses, in a disguised form, the power of something else – like money – that lies behind it. In one word, art has lost its autonomy. In this short book, Markus Gabriel rejects this view. He argues that art is essentially uncontrollable. It is in the nature of the work of art to be autonomous to such a degree that the art world will never manage to overpower it. Ever since the cave paintings of Lascaux, art has taken hold of the human mind and implemented itself in our very being. Thanks to the emergence of art we became human beings, that is, beings who lead their lives in light of an image of the human being and its position in the world and in relation to other species. Due to its structural, ontological power, art itself is and remains radically autonomous. Yet, this power is highly ambiguous, as we cannot control its unfolding. In this book, a leading proponent of New Realism applies this philosophical perspective to art to create a new aesthetic realism.
