Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years a new field of study has arisen called developmental biology. The term developmental biology is really a new name for embryology; it is, however, used to denote the molecular approach to the study of developing systems. In this book we have tried wherever possible to blend the older information of classical embryology and in particular organogeny with the newer concepts of developmental biology. The original intention was to cover all the tissues of the body in this book. However, it soon became obvious that it was not possible to do this within one volume. Therefore we decided to have two general chapters, one on the basic concepts of cellular development and an other on the ageing of cells (this being considered part of the normal growth process). In addition to these two general chapters we have included chapters on some of the major tissues. These were chosen not just to illustrate the points made in the general chapters but because there is enough information available on the development of these tissues for the expert in that field to present a good, readable account. It is hoped that at a later date when more information is available, we will be able to extend this work, probably as several volumes, and to include the other tissues of the body which are not dealt with in this volume.

Book excerpt: Vertebrate Skeletal Histology and Paleohistology summarizes decades of research into the biology and biological meaning of hard tissues, in both living and extinct vertebrates. In addition to outlining anatomical diversity, it provides fundamental phylogenetic and evolutionary contexts for interpretation. An international team of leading authorities review the impact of ontogeny, mechanics, and environment in relation to bone and dental tissues. Synthesizing current advances in the biological problems of growth, metabolism, evolution, ecology, and behavior, this comprehensive and authoritative volume is built upon a foundation of concepts and technology generated over the past fifty years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals primarily with the principal extracellular macromole cules of animal connective tissues. It attempts to answer some general questions about the biological organization of the tissues: What is the nature of this organization at various dimensional levels? What functions does the organization serve? How has it evolved? I have given major emphasis to the structures and properties of the macromolecular components of extracellular matrices from a wide range of invertebrates and vertebrates. In doing so, however, I have treated cursorily many important aspects of connective tissue biology that appeared to be only indirectly relevant to the principal questions asked. On the other hand, I have not hesitated to search for broad biological principles outside the prevailing conceptual boundaries of animal connective tissues and the lower molecular dimensional levels. The numerous speculations presented will, I hope, stimulate the reader to further thought and investigation. Acknowledgements My previously unpublished data that have been included in this volume could not have been obtained without the generous gifts of specimens and other assistance by a number of individuals and institutions. Book excerpt: The book presents a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding mechanisms regulating the formation of mineral in vertebrate skeletal and dental tissues. The focus of the book is directed toward the mineralization process, an evolutionarily conserved system in which cells synthesize a complex and unique extracellular matrix into which mineral is deposited. Regulatory control is viewed though lenses that emphasize the genetic, physical-chemical, biochemical, structural, cellular and extracellular aspects of the mineralization process as they relate to crystal nucleation, growth and maturation. Throughout the book, defects in regulation at the genetic and transcriptional levels are linked to the numerous clinical problems associated with the mineralization of bone, cartilage, tendon, tooth, and soft tissues. The book serves as a comprehensive text for basic scientists and scholars working in the many areas that comprise hard tissue research, as well as undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and those contemplating working in the field of biomineralization or who need a review of a specific mineralization topic. The information contained in the book is relevant for clinicians and clinical scientists in the fields of orthopaedic surgery, veterinary medicine, dentistry, endocrinology, aging and genetics.

Cellular and Molecular Biology of Bone covers the differentiation of these cells, the regulation of their growth and metabolism, and their death resorption. The authors' special comprehensive treatment of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of bone metabolism makes this book a unique and valuable tool. Cellular and Molecular Biology of Bone provides interested readers-with concise state-of-the-art reviews in bone biology that will enlarge their scope and increase their appreciation of the field. Research in this area has intensified recently due to the increasing incidence of osteoporosis. The editor hopes an understanding of the basic biology of this disease will prove relevant to its prevention and treatment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tissue engineering takes advantages of the combined use of cultured living cells and three-dimensional scaffolds to reconstruct adult tissues that are absent or malfunctioning. This book brings together scientists and clinicians working on a variety of approaches for regenerating of damaged or lost cartilage and bone to assess the progress of this dynamic field. In its early days, tissue engineering was driven by material scientists who designed novel bio-resorbable scaffolds on which to seed cells and grow tissues. This ground-breaking work generated high expectations, but there have been significant stumbling blocks holding back the widespread use of these techniques in the clinic. These challenges, and potential ways of overcoming them, are given thorough coverage in the discussions that follow each chapter. The key questions addressed in this book include the following. How good must cartilage repair be for it to be worthwhile? What is the best source of cells for tissue engineering of both bone and cartilage? Which are the most effective cell scaffolds? What are the best preclinical models for these technologies? And when it comes to clinical trials, what sort of outcome measures should be used? With contributions from some of the leading experts in this field, this timely publication will prove essential reading for anyone with an interest in the field of tissue engineering.

Book excerpt: Calcium and Phosphorus in Health and Disease is a valuable source of information on the role of nutrition in maintaining bone health throughout the life cycle. It emphasizes nutritional interactions with mineral metabolism and maintenance of bone health. This book presents the basic concepts of regulation of calcium and phosphorus metabolism by calcemic hormones and the structure and function of calcified tissues. It provides an in-depth review of bone growth and maintenance and calcium metabolism throughout the life cycle. Pregnancy and lactation, the effects of physical activity, and the special problems of nutrition and bone health in the elderly are addressed. It presents the basic biochemistry of mineral homeostasis and bone development and presents reviews by experts on the treatment and epidemiology of osteoporosis. This text/reference is extensively illustrated, with numerous original drawings created especially for this work. Calcium and Phosphorus in Health and Disease will benefit both students in medical and basic sciences who are beginning their studies in this area and researchers and clinicians who are not expert in this field but need a source of basic information on the subject. The book's current discussions and up-to-date references will quickly move the beginning student to a higher level of understanding.
