Book excerpt: th Coinciding with the 300 anniversary of the publication of Newton's Principia The International Astronomical Union organized the colloquium No. 96 "The Few Body Problem" in Turku, Finland, June 14.-19.1987. It provided an opportunity to review the progress in the very field which caused Newton a headache, as Victor Szebehely reminded the audience in his introductory remarks. It is a measure of the difficulty and complication of the few body problem that even after 300 years so many aspects of the problem are still unsolved. To quote Szebehely again, "Sir Isaac established the rules, Poincare presented the challenges". Many of these challenges are reviewed in the present proceedings. The gravitational few body problem cuts across the borders of established disciplines. The participants of the colloquium came from departments as different as Aerospace Engineering, Astronomy, Theoretical Physics, Physics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Planetology, Geodesy, Celestial Mechanics and Space Science. The few body problem is a problem of practical significance in many fields and the main aim of the colloquium was to bring together people with research interests in this area, many of whom normally attend different conferences.

Founded in the mid-1990s, the discipline of astrobiology combines the search for extraterrestrial life with the study of terrestrial biology – especially its origins, its evolution and its presence in extreme environments. This book offers a history of astrobiology's attempts to understand the nature of life in a larger cosmological context. Specifically, it describes the shift of early modern cosmology from a paradigm of celestial influence to one of celestial inhabitation. The discussion topics and the leaders were: Resonances and Chaos-A. Morbidelli; Artificial Satellite Orbits-K. T. Alfriend; Near Earth Ob jects - K. Muinonen; Small Solar System Bodies - I. Williams; and Summary - P. K. Seidelmann. The goal of the discussions was to identify what we did not know and how we might further our knowledge. The size of the meeting and the language differences somewhat limited the real discussion, but, due to the excellence of the different discussion leaders, each of these sessions was very interesting and productive. Celestial Mechanics and Astrometry are both small fields within the general subject of Astronomy. There is also an overlap and relationship between these fields and Astrodynamics. The amount of interaction depends on the interest and efforts of individual scientists.

Book excerpt: Lumbre de fe is the most extensive and articulate polemic text of polemic against Islam written during the 16th century in Spanish in the Iberian Peninsula. The work is the result of the preaching task carried out by Joan Martí de Figuerola for the conversion of the Mudejars of Zaragoza between 1517 and 1518, a task that brought Figuerola into numerous confrontations with the secular authorities for disturbing the coexistence between the two confessions. Lumbre de fe also stands out for its use of qur’ānic texts in Arabic to attack Islam. These texts, transliterated in Latin characters and translated into Spanish, are commented and discussed by Figuerola, making use of his vast theological erudition and his experience as a preacher in the crown of Aragon. The manuscript in which the work is preserved also contains numerous images representing Islamic beliefs and rites, which further reinforces the enormous originality and strength of the work.

The director was Giovanni Gallavotti, Roma, with co-directors Marcello Anile, Catania and P. F. Zweifel, Virginia Tech. Other members of the scientific organizing committee included Mitchell Feigenbaum, Rockefeller University and David Ruelle, IHES. The attendance at the school consisted of 23 invited speakers and approximately 80 "students", the term student being in quotation marks because many of them were of post-doctoral or even professorial status, although there were also a goodly number of actual graduate students in attendance also. Because of the disparate background of these "students", it was felt advisable to include at the conference special tutorials each afternoon, in which the contents of the morning's lectures were reviewed and clarified as necessary. These tutorials, organized by Gallavotti, involved various of the speakers, organizers, and other senior members of the school, and contributed in no little way to the overall success of the school. The organizers of the school would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who assisted in these sessions, and to assure them that the results were definitely worth the effort. Also contributing to the success of the school were a number of contributed papers, presented during the course of the afternoon tutorials. Three of those papers are included in these proceedings; they are the papers of DiFrancesco; Gallimbeni, Miari and Sertorio (presented by Sertorio); and Vittot.
