Book excerpt: CELESTIAL CITY AND ANTI-VANITY FAIR, with its Bunyan-like connotations, brings what John O'Loughlin had been building towards in previous books, such as 'Yang and Anti-Yin' and 'Lamb and Anti-Lion', to its logical conclusion, underlining the gender distinctions that exist at all points of what he calls the intercardinal axial compass, so that a more comprehensively exacting approach to terminology is possible and categorically upheld. Hence the metaphysical and antimetachemical implications of the title are reflected on a parallel terminological basis which it becomes a philosophical principle and moral duty to systematically embrace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, the pilgrims cannot reach the Celestial City without passing through Vanity Fair, where everything is bought and sold. In recent years there has been much analysis of commerce and consumption in Britain during the long eighteenth century, and of the dramatic expansion of popular publishing. Similarly, much has been written on the extraordinary effects of the evangelical revivals of the eighteenth century in Britain, Europe, and North America. But how did popular religious culture and the world of print interact? It is now known that religious works formed the greater part of the publishing market for most of the century. What religious books were read, and how? Who chose them? How did they get into people's hands? Vanity Fair and the Celestial City is the first book to answer these questions in detail. It explores the works written, edited, abridged, and promoted by evangelical dissenters, Methodists both Arminian and Calvinist, and Church of England evangelicals in the period 1720 to 1800. Isabel Rivers also looks back to earlier sources and forward to the continued republication of many of these works well into the nineteenth century. The first part is concerned with the publishing and distribution of religious books by commercial booksellers and not-for-profit religious societies, and the means by which readers obtained them and how they responded to what they read. The second part shows that some of the most important publications were new versions of earlier nonconformist, episcopalian, Roman Catholic, and North American works. The third part explores the main literary kinds, including annotated bibles, devotional guides, exemplary lives, and hymns. Building on many years' research into the religious literature of the period, Rivers discusses over two hundred writers and provides detailed case studies of popular and influential works.

Book excerpt: This quartet of books of aphoristic philosophy with a Social Theocratic dimension is comprised of 'Yang and Anti-Yin', 'Lamb and Anti-Lion', 'Celestial City and Anti-Vanity Fair' and, last but by no means least, 'Jesus - A Summing Up!', the title of which is a kind of oblique tribute to Arthur Koestler's estimable 'Janus - A Summing Up', which, however, would not have much bearing on the aforementioned works in terms of thematic structure, as germane, by and large, to the noumenal distinction between metaphysics and antimetachemistry, as explained in the texts.

Book excerpt: A substantial collection of extensively revised and reformatted philosophical weblogs from different sites by the author, John O'Loughlin, who has brought a variety of his most recent articles together in one place and achieved something of a consistent body of philosophical thought which extends his ideological and ontological positions without seeming overladen or overburdened with rhetoric, although a certain philological verbosity inevitably persists. Nevertheless, this remains one of Mr O'Loughlin's most significant works.

Book excerpt: These two 'posthumous' publications to John O'Loughlin's oeuvre-proper were culled, like the material of 'Opus Postscriptum', from two of his blogsites and contain material of an essayistic and aphoristic nature which has been extensively revised and reformatted to suit the parameters of e-book publication. There is a sense, though only a loose one, in which the first book corresponds to physics and the second, the so-called 'Theosophical Illuminations', to metaphysics; though that is more in the form than in the substance, since both books are equally radical and thoroughgoing in their approach to metaphysics and kindred subjects.

Book excerpt: Jesus - A Summing Up, as it has been titled, somewhat with Arthur Koestler's 'Janus - A Summing Up' in mind, pretty much brings the formal 'oeuvre' stage of John O'Loughlin's philosophizing, which began back in 1977 and has resulted in over ninety works of a philosophical nature, not to mention some thirty-odd works in other genres, to a satisfactory conclusion, and therefore it 'sums up' much of what has gone before and even adds some new material, much to the author's surprise, here and there - something presaging the next stage of things in the blogging with philosophical intent that was to come!

Book excerpt: OPUS POSTSCRIPTUM differs from John O'Loughlin's official written oeuvre in that it is comprised of revised and reformatted weblogs from the author's site at spweblog.com and is therefore supplementary to the works which came to a head with 'The Yang and Anti-Yin Quartet' (2005). Most of the essay-like supernotes of the two books that constitute this estimable e-book were written during 2005-6, and are therefore amongst Mr O'Loughlin's most up-to-date projects, supplementing his ideological approach to philosophy with fresh ideas and new logical permutations.

Book excerpt: BEYOND TRUTH AND ILLUSION markedly contrasts with John O'Loughlin's first venture into philosophy back in 1977, 'Between Truth and Illusion', and does so to the extent of being more akin to the omega point of his philosophical oeuvre than to anything alpha-like at the beginning. Here he has finally answered his doubts and brought his quest to rest on the basis of a collection of revised and reformatted weblogs which have every right to be regarded as aphoristically metaphysical.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how Methodism and popular review criticism intersected with and informed each other in the eighteenth century. Methodism emerged at a time when the idea of a ‘public square’ was taking shape, a process facilitated by the periodical press. Perhaps more so than any previous religious movement, Methodism, and the publications associated with it, received greater scrutiny largely because of periodical literature and the emergence of popular review criticism. The book considers in particular how works addressing Methodism were discussed and critiqued in the era’s two leading literary periodicals – The Monthly Review and The Critical Review. Focusing on the period between 1749 and 1789, the study encompasses the formative years of popular review criticism and some of the more dramatic moments in the textual culture of early Methodism. The author illustrates some of the specific ways these review journals diverged in their critical approaches and sensibilities as well as their politics and religious opinions. The Monthly’s and the Critical’s responses to the Methodists’ own publishing efforts as well as the anti-Methodist critique are shown to be both multifaceted and complex. The book critically reflects on the pretended neutrality, reasonableness, and objectivity of reviewers, who at times found themselves negotiating between the desire to regulate literary tastes and the impulse to undermine the Methodist revival. It will be relevant to scholars of religion, history and literary studies with an interest in Methodism, print culture, and the eighteenth century.

Book excerpt: Beginning with a wide-ranging introduction that explains why a theological reading of Victorian fiction is both rewarding and timely, Perkin also addresses religion's return to prominence in the twenty-first century, confounding earlier predictions of its imminent demise. Chapters on William Thackeray, Charlotte Brontë, Charlotte Yonge, Anthony Trollope, George Eliot, and Thomas Hardy are followed by a concluding discussion of Mary Ward and Walter Pater that relates Pater's Marius the Epicurean to postmodern theology and shows how it remains a religious classic for our own time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Domain of the Novel: Reflections on Some Historical Definitions discusses the genre of the novel and its dialogic and dialectical characteristics through an in-depth analysis of some classic English, Russian, American and Indian novels. A collection of lectures by the distinguished scholar of literature, A. N. Kaul, it analyses the exploration of personal voices and histories within a larger socio-political landscape in these works. Drawing examples from the works of Fielding, George Eliot, Dickens, Thackeray, Melville, Hawthorne, Twain, R.K. Narayan and others, who defined and redefined the territories of the novel, this book examines the articulation of the lived social, political and material realities of ordinary individuals in this genre. The lectures situate the novels within their cultural, socio-political, and historical contexts while focusing on their historical continuity and relevance. They further demonstrate how the domain of the novel brings together a multitude of voices while discussing conflicts of class, identity, nationalism, and historiography. The volume includes an insightful critical introduction by Sambudha Sen. It will be of great interest to researchers and scholars of literature, cultural studies, post-colonial studies, literary theory, creative writing, history, and sociology. It will be especially useful for readers interested in studying forms of fiction and the 18th, 19th, and 20th century novel.

Book excerpt: How did the Reformation, which initially promoted decidedly illiberal positions, end up laying the groundwork for Western liberalism? The English Reformation began as an evangelical movement driven by an unyielding belief in predestination, intolerance, stringent literalism, political quietism, and destructive iconoclasm. Yet by 1688, this illiberal early modern upheaval would deliver the foundations of liberalism: free will, liberty of conscience, religious toleration, readerly freedom, constitutionalism, and aesthetic liberty. How did a movement with such illiberal beginnings lay the groundwork for the Enlightenment? James Simpson provocatively rewrites the history of liberalism and uncovers its unexpected debt to evangelical religion. Sixteenth-century Protestantism ushered in a culture of permanent revolution, ceaselessly repudiating its own prior forms. Its rejection of tradition was divisive, violent, and unsustainable. The proto-liberalism of the later seventeenth century emerged as a cultural package designed to stabilize the social chaos brought about by this evangelical revolution. A brilliant assault on many of our deepest assumptions, Permanent Revolution argues that far from being driven by a new strain of secular philosophy, the British Enlightenment is a story of transformation and reversal of the Protestant tradition from within. The gains of liberalism were the unintended results of the violent early Reformation. Today those gains are increasingly under threat, in part because liberals do not understand their own history. They fail to grasp that liberalism is less the secular opponent of religious fundamentalism than its dissident younger sibling, uncertain how to confront its older evangelical competitor.
