Download or read book Celebrating the Holy Eucharist written by Francis Cardinal Arinze and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardinal Arinze, the greatly esteemed African churchman and head of the Vatican congregation for worship and sacraments, elucidates the Church's faith in the Eucharist as the high point of her public worship and the source and summit of Christian life. In Celebrating the Holy Eucharist, Cardinal Arinze emphasizes that the priest is ordained, first and foremost, to celebrate the Sacrifice of the Mass and other liturgical rites. The priest "finds himself at the hightest moment of his vocation when 'in persona Christi' he celebrates the Eucharistic Sacrifice." The laity also finds in the Mass "the fount and apex of their entire Christian lives." The Eucharist gives "life, meaning and direction" to all of their works and actions. Cardinal Arinze shows how the Eucharistic celebration sends the lay faithful out into the world to spread the gospel, giving special mention to the role of the family in the work of evangelization. The Cardinal also discusses in this book the changes in the Mass and other liturgical rites that have taken place during the last forty years. The responsibilities of the diocesan Bishop, the celebrating priest, and the assisting assembly are examined in depth.
Book Synopsis Celebrating the Eucharist by : Patrick Malloy
Download or read book Celebrating the Eucharist written by Patrick Malloy and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first new Eucharistic customary in nearly 20 years, Patrick Malloy, an Episcopal priest and liturgical scholar, presents a clear, illustrated guide for the presider and other leaders of the liturgy, contemporary in approach but based on ancient and classic principles of celebration. The 1979 Book of Common Prayer, like its predecessors, is long on telling the Church what to say, and short on telling it what to do. This leaves those who "choreograph" Prayer Book liturgies with a complex task and a powerful influence over the faith of the Church. The author begins with a concise theology of the liturgy that underpins all of his specific directives in the book. Contents include: Theological and liturgical principles; Liturgical ministry and liturgical ministers; Liturgical space; Vesture, vessels, and other liturgical objects; The liturgical year; The shape of the liturgy; The sung liturgy and singing during the liturgy; The order of the Eucharist (the "heart" of the book); and The celebration of Baptism during the Eucharist.

Book Synopsis Living the Eucharist by : Paul Bernier
Download or read book Living the Eucharist written by Paul Bernier and published by Twenty-Third Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the liturgy is truly to be the source and summit of our lives, says, Fr. Paul Bernier in this simple, clear, and perceptive book, then we need to look more closely at what we are really doing when we celebrate Eucharist, and see more clearly how it connects to our lives outside the church door. Bernier shows how the liturgy is meant to help us learn to dance to God's tune. A movement that was danced to perfection by Jesus, and whose melody is repeated over and over in the eucharistic liturgy. Fr. Bernier explores the five main rhythms of this liturgical, divine melody--"the gathering rhythm, the storytelling rhythm, the prophetic rhythm, the nurturing rhythm, and the missioning rhythm. He shows how these rhythms are meant to lead us deeper into sharing Christ's life, both in the liturgy in every moment of our days.
Book Synopsis Recovering the Love Feast by : Paul Fike Stutzman
Download or read book Recovering the Love Feast written by Paul Fike Stutzman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a Love Feast? How did the early church celebrate the Love Feast? How might Christians today celebrate the Love Feast? In Recovering the Love Feast, Paul Stutzman addresses these questions, offering a unique blend of liturgical history and practical theology. Part I outlines the history of the Love Feast, noting its prevalence in early church worship, its gradual decline, and its reemergence in the practices of several Pietist groups (e.g., the Moravians, Methodists, and Brethren). Particular focus is given to five elements of the celebration, that is: eucharistic preparation, feetwashing, the fellowship meal, the holy kiss, and the Eucharist proper. In Part II, Stutzman argues that the Love Feast is a valuable Christian practice and a celebration worth recovering in those traditions that may have forgotten the feast. Rather than prescribing a specific method for celebrating the Love Feast, Stutzman proposes that there are five key disciplines that today's Love Feasts should embody: submission, love, confession, reconciliation, and thanksgiving. This book encourages Christians from a range of traditions to experiment with reclaiming the Love Feast, with the hope that each celebration serves as an act of worship to God and an authentic expression of Christian discipleship.

He traces the development of Christian Eucharist from its Jewish roots to our own time. In addition to exploring the architecture, music, books, and vessels that contributed to each period's liturgical expressions, this edition introduces readers to the theology of each age as well as the historical and cultural contexts that shaped the Eucharist. Richly illustrated with numerous images and quotations from period texts, this book is a feast for the mind and eye. Through many examples of the visual and auditory symbols that are central to Eucharist, readers will discover how Christian worship is embodied worship that from age to age gives glory to God and sanctifies people.
Book Synopsis The Eucharistic Celebration by : Adolf Adam
Download or read book The Eucharistic Celebration written by Adolf Adam and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy says "The Church earnestly desires that Christ's faithful, when present at this mystery of faith, should not be there as strangers or silent spectators. On the contrary, through a good understanding of the rites and prayers they should take part in the sacred action, conscious of what they are doing, with devotion and full collaboration." What is needed and what the author offers here is that "good understanding" of the meaning and value of the Mass. After examining its historical development, Professor Adam explains each part of the Mass as it is currently celebrated. He uses understandable terminology and a form of presentation designed to increase appreciation of the Mass among the faithful and to provide the knowledge and impetus to achieve this in family and group discussions, in catechetical instruction, and in preaching.

Book Synopsis The Holy Eucharist- The World's Salvation by : Joseph De Sainte-Marie
Download or read book The Holy Eucharist- The World's Salvation written by Joseph De Sainte-Marie and published by . This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book, originally published in French, and now in English with a new foreword by Dom Alcuin Reid OSB, is a splendid example ante litteram of the task of the Hermeneutic of Continuity so courageously undertaken by Pope Benedict XVI. Without calling for a change in the post-Conciliar discipline of the Latin Church, the author offers a complete and trenchant historical and dogmatic critique of the recent neglect of the individually celebrated Mass in favour of concelebration. The discipline of the church after Sacrosanctum Concilium, up until the 1982 Code of Canon Law and the General Instruction of the Roman Missal for the third edition of the Missal of Paul VI, has always asserted the freedom of priests to celebrate individually, yet the liturgical and theological atmosphere of seminaries and religious communities has rarely favoured this freedom. Here is a careful discussion of the value of the multiplication of celebrations of the Eucharist, in the light both of the nature of the Eucharistic Sacrifice itself and of the theology of its fruits. A meticulous study of the history of the practice of concelebration shows that the present practice of daily concelebration, especially among simple priests without their Ordinary presiding, far from being a return to an ancient norm, is in fact a new development. The author concludes with a carefully nuanced set of practical proposals which, while giving to concelebration its due place, would serve to make better use of the infinite riches contained in the Holy Sacrifice. This conclusion may be summed up by the ancient prayer over the gifts found in both forms of the Roman Mass and quoted in the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council: As often as the memorial of this Victim is celebrated, the work of our redemption is accomplished. May the careful examination of this beautifully reasoned study lead to a renewed sense of the efficacy of the Church's Offering and of its frequent and devout celebration by her priests.
