Necessarily, those who have been prominently before the public as per formers are selected in preference to those who have been more celebrated as teachers. It was at first intended to arrange the chapters according to schools, but it soon became evident that such a plan would lead to inextricable confusion, and it was found. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celebrated Violinists, Past and Present Lest there be readers of this book who are inclined to cavil because it does not include the name of one or other of their best friends or pet musical gods, I would like to say that though one or two biographical sketches have been added to the original work, yet the book never was intended to be a perfect dictionary of violinists. Dictionaries exist in numbers already. The aim of the present volume is to give a few more details concerning some of the greatest of stringed instrument players than room could be found for in an ordinary biographical dictionary. It will, I think, be generally conceded, that no name of the first importance has been omitted. In view of later editions the translator will esteem it a favour if readers will send corrections of any mistakes to the publisher. I have nothing to add to my note which appeared in the first edition; but I may be allowed to thank those gentle readers who have made a second edition necessary. They, and others of a later generation, will much oblige by inwardly digesting the final paragraph of the first edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Violin: Its Famous Makers and Their Imitators For some time I have been in a state of doubt as to which course to pursue - whether to follow the usual custom, and address the reader in a Preface, or to combine my prefatory remarks with a Dedication. It will be seen that I have chosen the latter method. I am aware that inscriptions in connection with books are no longer in vogue; the necessity for them has happily long since passed away. In these free press days, though the writer of a book be the most obscure individual in the paths of literature, yet his pages will not lack readers, always providing they are worth perusal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Violins: And Violin LoreWhat is the secret of the violin? Why is it that when a great violinist appears all the other soloists have to take a back seat? The answer is: the fascination of the violin is the fascination of the soul unveiled. No instrument - the human voice hardly excepted - provides such a rare vehicle for the emotions - is in such close touch with the molecular vibrations of thought and with the psychic waves of feeling. But whilst the violin equals the voice in sensibility and expression, it far transcends it in compass, variety, and durability.Consider the singular completeness and perfection of this instrument as a sort of physical and vibratory counterpart of the soul. The four strings no doubt limit and define its compass, and only in the quartet and collectively, is it capable of extended effects of complex harmony; but as a tone-producing instrument and within its limits it is perfect - every gradation of sound between tone and semitone is attainable, and for no other instrument can this be claimed.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celebrated Pianists of the Past and Present: A Collection of One Hundred and Thirty-Nine Biographies, With Portraits It was only by adopting the system of alphabetical arrangement that the insurmountable difficulties of artistic comparison could be avoided. A greater equality of excellence is more easily noticed among pianoforte players than with violinists. It is impossible to exactly guage the degree of excellence of one against the other. As regards technik younger virtuosi are very nearly equal. Still the discerning reader will observe that his attention has been directed as far as possible to the peculiarities of those described and their signification for the various periods of artistic progression. As also that the greatest possible care has been bestowed on the technical reproduction of their portraits. Although it must be admitted that this book is to a certain extent incomplete, in consequence of the difficulties already mentioned, I trust it will be cordially welcomed by all friends of the pianoforte. For younger students of music it will afford instruction and supply fresh encouragement and stimulation to farther exertion.
