Book Synopsis Water and Cities in Latin America by : Ismael Aguilar-Barajas
Download or read book Water and Cities in Latin America written by Ismael Aguilar-Barajas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 80 per cent of the population of Latin America is concentrated in urban centres. Pressure on water resources and water management in cities therefore provide major challenges. Despite the importance of the issues, there has been little systematic coverage of the topic in book form. This work fills a gap in the literature by providing both thematic overviews and case study chapters. It reviews key aspects of why water matters in cities and presents case studies on topics such as groundwater management, green growth and water services, inequalities in water supply, the financing of water services and flood management. Detailed examples are described from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru, and there is also a chapter comparing lessons which might be learnt from US cities. Contributing authors are drawn from both within and outside the region, including from the Inter-American Development Bank, OECD and World Bank to set the issues in a global context.
Book Synopsis Overcoming Barriers by : Craig Taylor
Download or read book Overcoming Barriers written by Craig Taylor and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE. This TCLEE Monograph studies seven large lifeline organizations that have undertaken significant seismic improvement programs. In spite of often-cited barriers to natural hazards risk reduction, these organizations demonstrate a variety of ways to start and sustain risk-reduction programs. In these economically and politically robust organizations, top-level managers and high-level inside technical seismic advocates learned from the damage done by past earthquakes to their systems or similar systems and from research and educational programs. Then, each group developed an overall view of its system's earthquake vulnerabilities and devised adaptable, incremental seismic implementation programs.

This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reforestation of the Cedar River Water Shed If left to itself this logged-off land will be covered by a growth of weeds and a scattering growth of inferior timber and will remain non-productive and of practically no value to the community and to the state. It is evident that a policy of this kind. If applied to the watersheds which constitute the sources of supply of all of the large cities of the state, would result in the withdrawal of enormous areas of land from productive use. Would cause a great economic loss. And would prevent the proper upbuilding and development of the state. The problem is to determine the best use to be made of these logged-off lands within the watershed, having due regard to the necessity of protecting the water supply. It is evident that the use Of these lands for agricultural or dairy purposes. If they were adapted to that use. Would be one which would not be consistent with the purpose for which they were acquired. For the reason that it would mean the occupation of the land by large numbers of animals and the introduction of a resident population with consequent danger of pollution of the water supply.
