Recognizing that traditionally dismounted Special Forces operations in desert environments were unrealistic, the 1st Special Operations Command and the 5th Special Forces Group (SFG) authorized the formation of two elements in 1984 in order to develop mounted doctrine and operational techniques. Elements of Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th SFG, moved to Fort Bliss, Texas, and, in the autumn of 1986, began to fulfil this mission.Early detachments were equipped with M880 trucks and M151 jeeps. Later, they appraised, evaluated, and accepted the high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) as the interim desert mobility vehicle.In October 1987, A 1/5th SFG produced a summary of the lessons learned between 1985 and 1987. The initial intent of the compendium was to provide a reference for the training and employment of mounted SF detachments within 5th SFG. Standard operating procedures (SOPs) and lessons learned from both 3rd SFG and 5th SFG were incorporated, and procedures for new or improved equipment were added. Although many of the tactical principles remained essentially unchanged, revisions were necessary to account for equipment updates, such as the new ground mobility vehicle (GMV) and Global Positioning System (GPS) devices.This ATP encompasses the tactics, techniques, procedures, and lessons learned by personnel at Fort Bliss, Fort Campbell, Fort Bragg, and overseas, as well as data extracted from Operations DESERT SHIELD, DESERT STORM, RESTORE HOPE, PROVIDE DEMOCRACY, ENDURING FREEDOM, and IRAQI FREEDOM.This ATP is designed primarily to serve as a reference for the training and employment of mounted SF detachments operating in desert terrain during long-term, unassisted operations; however, the information in this ATP may also be applied to any SF long-range vehicular operation.As with all doctrinal manuals, ATP 3-18.14 is authoritative but not directive. Book excerpt: ATP 3-90.5 Combined Arms Battalion Feb 2016 This Army Techniques Publication (ATP 3-90.5) describes the techniques and procedures to tactically employ the combined arms battalion (CAB), the primary maneuver force of the Armored brigade combat team (ABCT) in unified land operations. While providing basic doctrinal principles, it attempts to refer tactical discussion out to the Brigade Combat Team Operations Field Manual (FM 3-90.6) and other appropriate manuals. This manual provides techniques and procedures appropriate for the CAB to effectively exercise the warfighting functions of mission command, movement and maneuver, intelligence, fires, sustainment, and protection, in the conduct of sustained combined arms and close combat operations. The techniques and procedures described herein are intended as a guide and are to be viewed as flexible in application, depending on the factors of mission, enemy, terrain and weather, troops and support available, time available, and civil considerations (METT-TC). It also provides the small-unit leader with guidance on how company-sized units and below can conduct these operations. The mountain environment challenges all warfighting functions. Infantry units are full spectrum organizations, not specifically designed for mountain terrain but are well-suited for mountain operations. Successful units combine the basic doctrine described in FM 3-21.10 and augment with specialized equipment and predeployment training. The tactics and techniques specific to conducting operations in mountain terrain provide added operational capability. Table 6-3 in this manual depicts where Soldiers may obtain specialized mountaineering and cold weather operational skills. This manual focuses on company and below operations in mountain operational terrain levels II and III as described in FM 3-97.6, specifically, where the influence of increasingly steep and rugged terrain dictates the use of dismounted operations. For mountain operations in level I (lower, less rugged valleys and flatter terrain) refer to FM 3-21.10. The concepts discussed in this publication are useful in most mountain environments. This publication applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard (ARNG)/Army National Guard of the United States (ARNGUS), and the United States Army Reserve (USAR) unless otherwise stated. Book excerpt: This manual provides engineer doctrine for operating at the BCT level and below and within the framework of unified land operations. The engineer support doctrine for the BCT is focused on tactical-level maneuvers. The engineer organizations that are organic to the BCT are optimized to perform combat engineering tasks (primarily mobility with limited capabilities in countermobility and survivability). Geospatial engineering support is provided by organic terrain teams. Additional engineering support (combat and general) comes from engineer organizations that are task-organized to the BCT or that provide support from echelons above brigade (EAB) organizations. This manual is aligned with current BCT doctrine and describes engineer support for the armored BCT, infantry BCT, and Stryker BCT. Although the armored cavalry regiment and engineer company are not specifically addressed, the basic principles of this manual also apply to those organizations. This manual also provides greater detail for commanders and staffs at brigade echelons and below to ensure the synchronization of engineer capabilities across the range of military operations. Many of the tactical tasks associated with combat and general engineering support have remained constant although current and proposed future operational environments have dramatically shifted with the emergence of new threats (such as improvised explosive devices [IEDs]) and an increased emphasis on stability operations. Another significant change involves Army reorganization and restructuring of the force and the effects that they have on doctrine and operations. Changes that directly affect this manual include the-Restructure of engineer organizations within each of the three types of BCTs and within the armored cavalry regiment; Likelihood that the operations conducted will be with unified action partners. (The primary focus of joint engineer operations is to achieve the commander's intent by coordinating engineer support throughout the joint area of operations.); Alignment of engineer doctrine that supports BCTs; Consequential changes in the basic Army organizational structure and equipment of engineer organizations.
