Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cavalry in Modern War IT has been said that a great general, like a great poet, is born, not made; and if this be true at all in any peculiar sense, it is true of the cavalry general, who must be well endowed with the gifts of nature before he begins to develop them by study and practice. But there is another saying, quite as true as the first, that genius consists in a capacity for taking trouble. One might drive a coach and six through either of these sayings, but there is an element of truth in both of them. No short-sighted, slow-thinking, muddle-headed man can make a good officer of any kind, least of all a good cavalry officer. But it would be quite as great an error to expect great things from one whose mind never rises above field sports and athletics. As a matter of fact, the Frederics and N apoleons of history have been thorough students as well as practical soldiers, and an officer who does not read can never, in these days, hope to excel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Cavalry: Studies on Its Role in the Warfare of to-Day With Notes on Training for War Service The tumult and shouting Of the world war has had a little time to die down. Throughout its course and for some time afterward it was impossible to clarify ideas and to deduce lessons. These require a certain amount of perspective for their better rendering. This perspective has been a little furnished by the passage of time. Time is a cold analyst who makes tangible the real causes and effects and relegates the merely subsidiary to a nebulous background. Out of the haze and smoke of conflict we can begin to see dimly the simple primitive forces that were at war and to see the underlying causes that make for victory or defeat. In freeing the mind from the thralldom of the present, in deliberately comparing this war with all wars, the mind Of the military student becomes amazed at the simplicity of the predominating factors in warfare. This last war has complicated the issue by the use in battle of a larger variety Of innovations in the way Of auxiliaries and mechanical aids, than any war in history. The aeroplane and the tank and a host of like aids have a tendency to obsess the mind Of the unthinking to the exclusion of the important factors in victory or defeat, to the real forces that battle for ascendency. Book excerpt: "Cavalry in Future Wars" by Friedrich von Bernhardi is an insightful educational reference book showing military thought during the period between horse and early mechanical cavalry. Written in the early 20th century, the book explores how new technology was resisted when it came to warfare and how letting go of the cavalry was considered nearly unthinkable for so long when new machines only just started coming into existence.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Cavalry: Its Organisation, Armament, and Employment in War, With an Appendix, Containing Letters From Generals Fitzhugh Lee, Stephen D. Lee and T. L. Rosser, of the Confederate States Cavalry; And Col. Jenyns' System of Non-Pivot Drill in Use in the 13th Hussars The improvements which have taken place of late years in the weapons of modern soldiers have ren dered necessary a certain amount of change in the tactics of the different branches of the service; and the following pages are written with the view of advocating certain alterations in the organisation, armament, and employment of cavalry in modern warfare. The arguments adduced are based mainly upon the teachings of the late wars in America and Ger many, where for the first time breech-loading and repeating rifles were used to any great extent. Of course many of the principles of cavalry operations are still the same as they have been for ages; on these points I have followed the rules laid down in the best authorities on the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Cavalry I Have two lectures and one conference in which to discuss the employment or use of cavalry. There is a good deal on this subject scattered through the F.S.R., and certain paragraphs of the C.D.R. have been assigned for conference. But what is given in both F.S.R., and C.D.R. is in general so condensed that it does not clear up the situation much unless one has a good mental picture of the situations the authors had in view. I shall try to go more into detail, so that the application of the principles given in the C.D.R. and the F.S.R. may be more clear. The whole matter of the employment of cavalry is so little a matter of rule that it may be said there are no rules for it. In regard to some questions there are various opinions, and the details of how cavalry was handled in war to accomplish certain results are hard to obtain. But there are a number of general principles as to which there is very little question, though the methods of applying these principles may vary. More new ideas on the subject of the employment of cavalry were brought out and put into practice in our Civil War than in any war since, and, up to the present time, there is no better source of information as to how cavalry should be handled - also, from this same war numerous examples of how cavalry should never be used.
