Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the enduring popular image of the blitzkrieg of World War II, the German Army always depended on horses. It could not have waged war without them. While the Army’s reliance on draft horses to pull artillery, supply wagons, and field kitchens is now generally acknowledged, D. R. Dorondo’s Riders of the Apocalypse examines the history of the German cavalry, a combat arm that not only survived World War I but also rode to war again in 1939. Though concentrating on the period between 1939 and 1945, the book places that history firmly within the larger context of the mounted arm’s development from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 to the Third Reich’s surrender. Driven by both internal and external constraints to retain mounted forces after 1918, the German Army effectively did nothing to reduce, much less eliminate, the preponderance of non-mechanized formations during its breakneck expansion under the Nazis after 1933. Instead, politicized command decisions, technical insufficiency, industrial bottlenecks, and, finally, wartime attrition meant that Army leaders were compelled to rely on a steadily growing number of combat horsemen throughout World War II. These horsemen were best represented by the 1st Cavalry Brigade (later Division) which saw combat in Poland, the Netherlands, France, Russia, and Hungary. Their service, however, came to be cruelly dishonored by the horsemen of the 8th Waffen-SS Cavalry Division, a unit whose troopers spent more time killing civilians than fighting enemy soldiers. Throughout the story of these formations, and drawing extensively on both primary and secondary sources, Dorondo shows how the cavalry’s tradition carried on in a German and European world undergoing rapid military industrialization after the mid-nineteenth century. And though Riders of the Apocalypse focuses on the German element of this tradition, it also notes other countries’ continuing (and, in the case of Russia, much more extensive) use of combat horsemen after 1900. However, precisely because the Nazi regime devoted so much effort to portray Germany’s armed forces as fully modern and mechanized, the combat effectiveness of so many German horsemen on the battlefields of Europe until 1945 remains a story that deserves to be more widely known. Dorondo’s work does much to tell that story.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cavalry in Modern War It has been said that a great general, like a great poet, is born, not made; and if this be true at all in any peculiar sense, it is true of the cavalry general, who must be well endowed with the gifts of nature before he begins to develop them by study and practice. But there is another saying, quite as true as the first, that genius consists in a capacity for taking trouble. One might drive a coach and six through either of these sayings, but there is an element of truth in both of them. No short-sighted, slow-thinking, muddle-headed man can make a good officer of any kind, least of all a good cavalry officer. But it would be quite as great an error to expect great things from one whose mind never rises above field sports and athletics. As a matter of fact, the Frederics and Napoleons of history have been thorough students as well as practical soldiers, and an officer who does not read can never, in these days, hope to excel. No one who is well acquainted with the Service as it exists will feel any anxiety lest cavalry officers should become over-studious. Book excerpt: "Cavalry in Future Wars" by Friedrich von Bernhardi is an insightful educational reference book showing military thought during the period between horse and early mechanical cavalry. Written in the early 20th century, the book explores how new technology was resisted when it came to warfare and how letting go of the cavalry was considered nearly unthinkable for so long when new machines only just started coming into existence.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Cavalry: Studies on Its Role in the Warfare, of to-Day With Notes on Training for War Service The tumult and shouting of the world war has had a little time to die down. Throughout its course and for some time afterward it was impossible to clarify ideas and to deduce lessons. These require a certain amount of perspective for their better rendering. This perspective has been a little furnished by the passage of time. Time is a cold analyst who makes tangible the real causes and effects and relegates the merely subsidiary to a nebulous background. Out of the haze and smoke of conflict we can begin to see dimly the simple primitive forces that were at war and to see the underlying causes that make for victory or defeat. In freeing the mind from the thralldom of the present, in deliberately comparing this war with all wars, the mind of the military student becomes amazed at the simplicity of the predominating factors in warfare. This last war has complicated the issue by the use in battle of a larger variety of innovations in the way of auxiliaries and mechanical aids, than any war in history. The aeroplane and the tank and a host of like aids have a tendency to obsess the mind of the unthinking to the exclusion of the important factors in victory or defeat, to the real forces that battle for ascendency. Battle is decided by men. Mechanical aids and auxiliaries end by neutralizing each other. They do not decide a war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its charismatic leader George Custer and its memorable encounters with Plains Indians, including the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Seventh Cavalry serves as the iconic regiment in the post–Civil War U.S Army. Voluminous written documentation as well as archaeological and osteological research suggest that the soldiers of the Seventh represented a cross section of the men who joined the army as a whole at the time. In Health of the Seventh Cavalry, editors P. Willey and Douglas D. Scott and their co-contributors—experts in history, medicine, human biology, epidemiology, and human osteology—examine the Seventh’s medical records to determine the health of the nineteenth-century U.S. Army, and the prevalence and treatment of the numerous conditions that plagued soldiers during the Indian Wars. Building on previous comparisons of archaeological evidence and medical records, Willey and Scott follow multiple lines of inquiry to assess the health of the Seventh, from its organization in 1866 to its 1884 station on the Northern Great Plains. Pairing general overviews of nineteenth- and twentieth-century health care with essays on malaria, injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other specific ailments, Health of the Seventh Cavalry provides fresh insights into the health, disease, and trauma that the regiment experienced over two decades. More than 100 tables, graphs, and maps track the troops’ illnesses and diseases by month, season, year, and location, as well as their stress periods, desertions, and deaths. A glossary of medical terms rounds out the volume. As an ideal exemplar of regiments of its time, the Seventh Cavalry affords scholars and enthusiasts a better understanding of nineteenth-century health and medicine. This volume reveals the struggles that the post–Civil War Seventh, and the entire U.S. Army, faced on the battlefield and elsewhere.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Cavalry: Its Organisation, Armament, and Employment in War, With an Appendix, Containing Letters From Generals Fitzhugh Lee, Stephen D. Lee and T. L. Rosser, of the Confederate States Cavalry; And Col. Jenyns' System of Non-Pivot Drill in Use in the 13th Hussars The improvements which have taken place of late years in the weapons of modern soldiers have ren dered necessary a certain amount of change in the tactics of the different branches of the service; and the following pages are written with the view of advocating certain alterations in the organisation, armament, and employment of cavalry in modern warfare. The arguments adduced are based mainly upon the teachings of the late wars in America and Ger many, where for the first time breech-loading and repeating rifles were used to any great extent. Of course many of the principles of cavalry operations are still the same as they have been for ages; on these points I have followed the rules laid down in the best authorities on the subject.
