Book excerpt: Horses and horsemen played central roles in modern European warfare from the Renaissance to the Great War of 1914-1918, not only determining victory in battle, but also affecting the rise and fall of kingdoms and nations. When Shakespeare's Richard III cried, "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!" he attested to the importance of the warhorse in history and embedded the image of the warhorse in the cultural memory of the West. In Riding to Arms: A History of Horsemanship and Mounted Warfare, Charles Caramello examines the evolution of horsemanship—the training of horses and riders—and its relationship to the evolution of mounted warfare over four centuries. He explains how theories of horsemanship, navigating between art and utility, eventually settled on formal manège equitation merged with outdoor hunting equitation as the ideal combination for modern cavalry. He also addresses how the evolution of firepower and the advent of mechanized warfare eventually led to the end of horse cavalry. Riding to Arms tracks the history of horsemanship and cavalry through scores of primary texts ranging from Federico Grisone's Rules of Riding (1550) to Lt.-Colonel E.G. French's Good-Bye to Boot and Saddle (1951). It offers not only a history of horsemen, horse soldiers, and horses, but also a survey of the seminal texts that shaped that history.

Book excerpt: A classic in its field and once an official textbook of the U.S. Cavalry School, located in Fort Riley, Kansas, this manual influenced the professional development of horse Cavalrymen during the last years of the mounted services in U.S. Army. Long out of print, its reappearance will be welcomed by all who share an interest in horse lore, and especially by Cavalry veterans who refined their own equestrian skills in accordance with its principles. These two volumes (in one book) are veritable classics of the American equestrian tradition. Originally written as manuals used to train recruits and remounts (horses) for the Cavalry, they contain timeless information and methods that can be applied by horsemen and horsewomen of all disciplines today. The truths contained in these pages are universal. These texts were written to devise a system by which ordinary lay people (recruits) could be taught to ride in a pragmatic, easy-to-follow method. Further, the method for teaching Horsemanship: Part I was devised so that it did not rely on the rider's inherent talent for riding (or lack thereof.) The beauty of the method, is that it is democratic and pragmatic in its approach. Similarly, the training of the horse outlined in Horsemastership: Part II, is applicable to grade horses irrespective of their innate ride-ability or trainability. The Cavalry came by horses by a variety of means and the stock was of varied talent. The methods outlined in Part II when applied, and followed, will work with most any horse. What was true 80-100 years ago is still relevant today; equine nature has not changed in the past 100 years.

Book excerpt: This is quite simply the most important book ever written in the English language by a military man on the subject of equestrian travel. It was designed to be used by the United States cavalry. Yet it differs from traditional manuals in that it has says nothing about drills and everything about horse journeys. If you want to learn how to properly pack and ride a horse over extremely long distances, then you are holding the cavalry man's sacred text in your hands. At the dawn of the 20th century experts were busy predicting the imminent demise of the horse. Mankind's most historically influential comrade would make way for the automobile, cynics said. Yet the young author of this remarkable volume disagreed with the critics. No machine of steam and steel, of cog or cam, no vapor-fed motor, no craft propelled by batteries or boilers would ever successfully displace the horse from our on-going needs, advised Boniface. Part text book, part history book and all inspiration, "The Cavalry Horse and His Pack" is the lasting tribute to the great horseman and talented writer who foresaw the day when horse travel would once again flourish and a book such as this one would be cherished by unforeseen generations of Long Riders, cavalry students and horse lovers.

Our men are superior to those of other nations, and there is no quality in which the well-bred English horse does not excel, no performance in which he cannot beat all competition. No, it is the system which is at fault. To ascertain and expose the faults of an existing state of things is easier than to substitute a different one, which shall not be liable to greater objections; a trial of the system which I advocate, will, at least, prove interesting, and I hope establish beyond a doubt the great advantages to be derived from it. Excerpt: ...their horses well up to the bit, and putting them together with the use of hand and leg; to see that in all turns, circles, &c, &c, the men bend their horses' heads and necks in the new direction before leaving the boards. Endeavour to make them perfect in their bending and trotting lessons; practise the going "about on the haunches" by frequently halting the rides when at the boards, and giving the word, "On the Haunches About" "March." You then form up and finish with the same bending lessons you began with, namely, "Circling on the forehand," "on the Haunches," "Reining in," and "Applying the Spur." The Horse's Paces. WALK, TROT, AND CANTER. How to Strike off a Horse to both Hands at a Canter--How to change when False or Disunited. The Walk. Monsieur Baucher does not begin the trot till he has perfected the horse at the walk, but I found it answered better in practice to go on with the trotting at the same time; however get a thing well done at a walk before you try it at a trot. Before moving forward, the horse should be light in hand, the head brought home (and not with the nose stuck out), the neck arched, and he should stand evenly on both hind legs. Close the legs and communicate a sufficient impulse to carry him forward, but do not ease the hand at the same time, as laid down in the old system, because if you do, the head and neck may relapse into a position which will defy the control of the hand. The rider should always have a light feeling of both reins, and when the horse bores on the bit, keep the hand steady, use both legs, which, by bringing his haunches under him, will oblige the horse to take his weight off your hand. THE TROT. A horse trots...
