Download or read book Lyric Wonder written by James Biester and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Biester sees the shift in late Elizabethan England toward a witty, rough, and obscure lyric style—metaphysical wit and strong lines—as a response to the heightened cultural prestige of wonder. That same prestige was demonstrated in the search for strange artifacts and animals to display in the wonder-cabinets of the period. By embracing the genres of satire and epigram, poets of the Elizabethan court risked their chances for political advancement, exposing themselves to the danger of being classified either as malcontents or as jesters who lacked the gravitas required of those in power. John Donne himself recognized both the risks and benefits of adopting the'admirable'style, as Biester shows in his close readings of the First and Fourth Satyres. Why did courtier-poets adopt such a dangerous form of self-representation? The answer, Biester maintains, lies in an extraordinary confluence of developments in both poetics and the interpenetrating spheres of the culture at large, which made the pursuit of wonder through style unusually attractive, even necessary. In a postfeudal but still aristocratic culture, he says, the ability to astound through language performed the validating function that was once supplied by the ability to fight. Combining the insights of the new historicism with traditional literary scholarship, Biester perceives the rise of metaphysical style as a social as well as aesthetic event.

Download or read book Cavalier Lyrics written by Joseph Woodfall Ebsworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cavalier Lyrics: For Church and Crown Surely we need more of the Cavalier spirit among us. If we had it, we might then take life pleasantly, working no less industriously, without being so noisy about our religion or decrying other people's irreligion. Too much commotion 18 made, far too much nonsense is talked, and rabid salvationist rant encouraged, by those who ought to know better. Let us avoid sanctimoniousness, as we desire to avoid rebellion. The favourers of the one are prone to the other. Mawworm and Anarchus generally hunt in couples, as they did of Old. Let us resist the encroachments Of Puritanical intolerance and ugliness, physical Or moral. Laugh to silence the re-assertors that Beauty is only skin - deep!' Who wishes to go deeper than the surface, and burrow down into the skeleton? Love a fair face, without disguise or shame; for the Platonic doctrine is true, and a beautiful soul is generally found in a beautiful casket. The mind fashions its receptacle in harmony; although it has a hard task before it, after many generations have been brutalized by a sordid Puritanism. Let us love whatever deserves to be loved, and not insult humanity by morbid discontent, vivisecting all that is fair, all that is holy, in distrust and conventicle malevolence. If life be made brighter to others, by sweetness and open heartedness, we cannot fail to share the happiness we so readily extend. That is the Cavalier faith and practice. It will be long before anybody finds a better. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
