Book Synopsis Punishment Without Crime by : Alexandra Natapoff
Download or read book Punishment Without Crime written by Alexandra Natapoff and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory account of the misdemeanor machine that unjustly brands millions of Americans as criminals. Punishment Without Crime offers an urgent new interpretation of inequality and injustice in America by examining the paradigmatic American offense: the lowly misdemeanor. Based on extensive original research, legal scholar Alexandra Natapoff reveals the inner workings of a massive petty offense system that produces over 13 million cases each year. People arrested for minor crimes are swept through courts where defendants often lack lawyers, judges process cases in mere minutes, and nearly everyone pleads guilty. This misdemeanor machine starts punishing people long before they are convicted; it punishes the innocent; and it punishes conduct that never should have been a crime. As a result, vast numbers of Americans -- most of them poor and people of color -- are stigmatized as criminals, impoverished through fines and fees, and stripped of drivers' licenses, jobs, and housing. For too long, misdemeanors have been ignored. But they are crucial to understanding our punitive criminal system and our widening economic and racial divides. A Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2018

Book Synopsis The Behavioral Code by : Benjamin van Rooij
Download or read book The Behavioral Code written by Benjamin van Rooij and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An American Psychology-Law Society’s Lawrence S. Wrightsman Book Award Winner A 2022 PROSE Award finalist in Legal Studies and Criminology A 2022 American Bar Association Silver Gavel Award Finalist A Behavioral Scientist’s Notable Book of 2021 Freakonomics for the law—how applying behavioral science to the law can fundamentally change and explain misbehavior Why do most Americans wear seatbelts but continue to speed even though speeding fines are higher? Why could park rangers reduce theft by removing “no stealing” signs? Why was a man who stole 3 golf clubs sentenced to 25 years in prison? Some laws radically change behavior whereas others are consistently ignored and routinely broken. And yet we keep relying on harsh punishment against crime despite its continued failure. Professors Benjamin van Rooij and Adam Fine draw on decades of research to uncover the behavioral code: the root causes and hidden forces that drive human behavior and our responses to society’s laws. In doing so, they present the first accessible analysis of behavioral jurisprudence, which will fundamentally alter how we understand the connection between law and human behavior. The Behavioral Code offers a necessary and different approach to battling crime and injustice that is based in understanding the science of human misconduct—rather than relying on our instinctual drive to punish as a way to shape behavior. The book reveals the behavioral code’s hidden role through illustrative examples like: • The illusion of the US’s beloved tax refund • German walls that “pee back” at public urinators • The $1,000 monthly “good behavior” reward that reduced gun violence • Uber’s backdoor “Greyball” app that helped the company evade Seattle’s taxi regulators • A $2.3 billion legal settlement against Pfizer that revealed how whistleblower protections fail to reduce corporate malfeasance • A toxic organizational culture playing a core role in Volkswagen’s emissions cheating scandal • How Peter Thiel helped Hulk Hogan sue Gawker into oblivion Revelatory and counterintuitive, The Behavioral Code catalyzes the conversation about how the law can effectively improve human conduct and respond to some of our most pressing issues today, from police misconduct to corporate malfeasance.
Download or read book Caught and Spanked written by J. G. Knox and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carley is young, inexperienced and in love. She breaks the rules, is about to make love. Interrupted by Officer O'Holleran and a visit to the sheriff's office, she goes home with her mother. Instead of new exciting feelings on her backside in the back of a pickup truck, she experiences old exciting feelings on her backside at home. A Christian mother, a Christian daughter, one learns the value of virtue; her life changed by appropriate Christian discipline.Afterward: The discussion: Corporal punishment is not the sole property of Christianity. Islam is even more specific in requiring corporal punishment. Most Islamic nations and culture encourage discipline, as does Christianity. Are there any major world religions that historically opposed corporal punishment? America was founded on freedom of choice in religion, not freedom from religion. However socialist governments of the last century frequently opposed all religion. In Russia, in 1917, after the victory of Communist forces over the Czar, corporal punishment was abolished in the schools, and a great experiment was set in motion in which the lives of the people of Russia were greatly changed. No religion, no corporal punishment---did violence decrease in the Communist world? If memory serves me correctly more than 26 million people were executed after the revolution. Has elimination of corporal punishment decreased violence as America joined the historical Communist position in opposing religion and discipline in public schools?Russia has changed. It is now using corporal punishment for crimes, and their rate of dope addiction is dropping in those locations where possession of narcotics is punished by paddling, not imprisonment. The rate of violent crime in the Muslim world, where corporal punishment is often required by law, ranges from 1 to 10% of what we have in America. Are there any studies based on sound scientific principles which support the elimination of corporal punishment? If there are, I haven't found one.Paddling, spanking, corporal punishment is becoming a crime in America, wrong, evil. Is it? All the major religions prescribe it. Are the statics linking violent crime and LACK of corporal punishment all wrong? What is wrong, is doing it incorrectly. The purpose of this story, and the other books I have written including this subject are to show the right way, the non-abusive way to correct. Hurting a child, spanking in anger, using a tool that can cause injury---these are wrong. Spanking with proper knowledge and love is very different. Causing tears of repentance and correction without harm in order to avert tears of a life irreparably damaged is right---not wrong. However, this is a discussion. No human who feels or has felt pain is completely objective on this subject. We need to follow facts. We need to consider and learn why Russia, who led the world in abandoning corporal punishment is bringing it back, and why there is such a striking difference in the statistics of violent crime between nations who use corporal punishment and those who don't---being much lower in nations using corporal punishment.

With a focus on why offenders commit crimes, this bestseller skillfully engages students with real-world cases and examples to help students explore the fundamentals of criminology. To better align with how instructors actually teach this course, coverage of violent and property crimes has been integrated into the theory chapters, so students can clearly understand the application of theory to criminal behavior. Unlike other introductory criminology textbooks, the Second Edition discusses issues of diversity in each chapter and covers many contemporary topics that are not well represented in other texts, such as feminist criminology, cybercrime, hate crimes, white-collar crime, homeland security, and identity theft. Transnational comparisons regarding crime rates and the methods other countries use to deal with crime make this edition the most universal to date and a perfect companion for those wanting to learn about criminology in context.

Download or read book CrossDressing Husband Caught & Punished written by Angelica Marie Gossett and published by Angelica Marie Gossett. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was shortly after they were married. Diane began to suspect that her husband Stephen was a crossdresser who was wearing her clothes. Well, if he had a secret, he would no doubt deny it. She decided to document his secret escapades first. If he wanted to dress as a girl, he should have sex as a girl. But given his being secretly recorded in her pretty pink bridal nightgown, it gave Diane an idea. Her husband had some traditional ideas. So his 1st time being made to have sex as a girl should be special. Special occasions should have a special dress. What better than a long formal feminine bridal gown for her husband to wear before his 1st time? So Diane developed an elaborate plan to force feminize her husband, publically expose him dressed as a girl, and then prepare him for his bridal gown. Warning: Don't let your wife or girlfriend learn of Diane's plan because it was perfect. Stephen truly had no option but to be dressed in public as a girl to begin the day, You also will wind up having no choice either if anybody does to you what Diane did to Stephen. Brides need to have their makeup done. They need to have help dressing in their bridal gown. They need to have bridesmaid and maids of honor. They need to have their pictures taken. They need to have a new name. All of this prior to the formal presentation and introduction to their spouse. Diane was going to make sure Stephen got the full complete total treatment. Then, of course, the bridal night. The "mythical" first time she has sex. Well, Stephen was going to get the full treatment here also. Punishment enema, plus punishment oral sex, punishment anal sex, forced consumption, bondage, whips, and cock torture. But the psychological punishment would be equally as bad with suggestions and elements of cuckolding and forced-bi to demean and shame her husband. As the evening progressed, Diane and her family learned even more of Stephen's secrets. Diane already had a plan to make Stephen's mother an unwilling participant in the bridal weekend. But, now, those plans would change. His mother would have a much more expanded and permanent role. Stephen's crossdressing was always a family affair from the very beginning. Now, it would be a much larger family affair. It was time to complete what had been started years before he met Diane. Of course, your author on her cover image is wearing a dress that matches the story.

Book Synopsis The Limits of Blame by : Erin I. Kelly
Download or read book The Limits of Blame written by Erin I. Kelly and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith in the power and righteousness of retribution has taken over the American criminal justice system. Approaching punishment and responsibility from a philosophical perspective, Erin Kelly challenges the moralism behind harsh treatment of criminal offenders and calls into question our society’s commitment to mass incarceration. The Limits of Blame takes issue with a criminal justice system that aligns legal criteria of guilt with moral criteria of blameworthiness. Many incarcerated people do not meet the criteria of blameworthiness, even when they are guilty of crimes. Kelly underscores the problems of exaggerating what criminal guilt indicates, particularly when it is tied to the illusion that we know how long and in what ways criminals should suffer. Our practice of assigning blame has gone beyond a pragmatic need for protection and a moral need to repudiate harmful acts publicly. It represents a desire for retribution that normalizes excessive punishment. Appreciating the limits of moral blame critically undermines a commonplace rationale for long and brutal punishment practices. Kelly proposes that we abandon our culture of blame and aim at reducing serious crime rather than imposing retribution. Were we to refocus our perspective to fit the relevant moral circumstances and legal criteria, we could endorse a humane, appropriately limited, and more productive approach to criminal justice.
