Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would an alcoholic Chicago homicide detective question the motives of a drummer from a freshly signed rock-blues band? Why does he keep interviewing an elderly widower with dementia? What are an identity-concealing stripper, a bisexual kleptomaniac, a suicidal hot dog cart vendor, a Catholic priest, a well-traveled bluesman with the world's most horrific stutter, and a leggy bartender with a crescent-shaped scar on her pretty face hiding from him? These are the people Detective Carter Woodbine must drink in to solve the mystery in Mrs. O'Leary's Cow. The gumshoe searches for answers at an Irish pub where he sifts through the grit of its patrons and occasionally finding flecks of gold. Among his digging for truths, he unearths enigmas buried deeply within the soil of these people of interest, and even some of his own. But will all the digging and dirt lead to somewhere other than his own grave? Mrs. O'Leary's Cow is much more than a detective quest; it's a reflection of the great city of Chicago and its people during the two days leading up to Christmas.

Book excerpt: We've all seen kids who kick and scream and lose their cool. But when Eric loses his temper over his annoying little sister Alice, he floats up to the ceiling! And so we have a fresh and funny twist on temper tantrums created by Jenni Desmond. Eric, The Boy Who Lost His Gravity, with an amusing story and expressive painterly art, captures a spot-on understanding of how children feel when they get out of control and how they need help to pull themselves together-or, as in Eric's case, back to the ground. There will always be annoying brothers and sisters and things one wants, but can't have. This book gives children and parents an entertaining way to gain perspective and talk about these issues. For all of them, Eric offers a wise, witty, and uplifting tale that kids won't want to put down!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the pantheon of air power spokesmen, Giulio Douhet holds center stage. His writings, more often cited than perhaps actually read, appear as excerpts and aphorisms in the writings of numerous other air power spokesmen, advocates-and critics. Though a highly controversial figure, the very controversy that surrounds him offers to us a testimonial of the value and depth of his work, and the need for airmen today to become familiar with his thought. The progressive development of air power to the point where, today, it is more correct to refer to aerospace power has not outdated the notions of Douhet in the slightest In fact, in many ways, the kinds of technological capabilities that we enjoy as a global air power provider attest to the breadth of his vision. Douhet, together with Hugh “Boom” Trenchard of Great Britain and William “Billy” Mitchell of the United States, is justly recognized as one of the three great spokesmen of the early air power era. This reprint is offered in the spirit of continuing the dialogue that Douhet himself so perceptively began with the first edition of this book, published in 1921. Readers may well find much that they disagree with in this book, but also much that is of enduring value. The vital necessity of Douhet’s central vision-that command of the air is all important in modern warfare-has been proven throughout the history of wars in this century, from the fighting over the Somme to the air war over Kuwait and Iraq.

Book excerpt: Adventures in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Let's go to India for a few sublimely ridiculous non-adventure holidays. It's hot, cheap and freaky over there. These are the stories of my three trips to India. Most of the action happens in India, but Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Netherlands and England also feature. If you have ever travelled in South Asia, you will probably relate to some of this. Look out for the story of the two laundry men who looked similar to each other. They caused all kinds of confusion. The first India trip was from the perspective of a tourist, but foir the second and third trips I brought along some larger-than-life personalities, Bongo van Latte and Streev Greebling. Third world or no third world, we're gonna party! Wittily written, well designed, and illustrated with photographs and artwork.

However, the reality of those same folks ranch lives often hits them in the side of the head like the handle on a squeeze chute. The whirlwind of the modern-day cowboy life leaves seemingly little time for praying and even less time for sermons that dont hit home. God needs to be real, and he needs to be found in the everyday, dawn-to-midnight struggles and joys of true-to-life, cow-feeding, bronc-stomping folks who live in a world where there are espresso shacks in feed-store parking lots. In The Cattle on a Thousand Hills, stories of genuine individuals who live life on the working end of a calf-puller teach lessons that only a real God can provide, set in the real world in which cowboys, horsemen, and ranch wives live. Combining true stories and life lessons with biblical wisdom, this book is at the same time humorous and poignant. Its pages will provide a look at life through Gods eyes that can be applied to anyones life, but especially to the folks who spend their summers cutting hay and their winters feeding it.

Book excerpt: An argument that operational urban planning can be improved by the application of the tools of urban economics to the design of regulations and infrastructure. Urban planning is a craft learned through practice. Planners make rapid decisions that have an immediate impact on the ground—the width of streets, the minimum size of land parcels, the heights of buildings. The language they use to describe their objectives is qualitative—“sustainable,” “livable,” “resilient”—often with no link to measurable outcomes. Urban economics, on the other hand, is a quantitative science, based on theories, models, and empirical evidence largely developed in academic settings. In this book, the eminent urban planner Alain Bertaud argues that applying the theories of urban economics to the practice of urban planning would greatly improve both the productivity of cities and the welfare of urban citizens. Bertaud explains that markets provide the indispensable mechanism for cities’ development. He cites the experience of cities without markets for land or labor in pre-reform China and Russia; this “urban planners’ dream” created inefficiencies and waste. Drawing on five decades of urban planning experience in forty cities around the world, Bertaud links cities’ productivity to the size of their labor markets; argues that the design of infrastructure and markets can complement each other; examines the spatial distribution of land prices and densities; stresses the importance of mobility and affordability; and critiques the land use regulations in a number of cities that aim at redesigning existing cities instead of just trying to alleviate clear negative externalities. Bertaud concludes by describing the new role that joint teams of urban planners and economists could play to improve the way cities are managed.

Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.

Book excerpt: “Pollan keeps you turning the pages . . . cleareyed and assured.” —New York Times A #1 New York Times Bestseller, New York Times Book Review 10 Best Books of 2018, and New York Times Notable Book A brilliant and brave investigation into the medical and scientific revolution taking place around psychedelic drugs--and the spellbinding story of his own life-changing psychedelic experiences When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third. Thus began a singular adventure into various altered states of consciousness, along with a dive deep into both the latest brain science and the thriving underground community of psychedelic therapists. Pollan sifts the historical record to separate the truth about these mysterious drugs from the myths that have surrounded them since the 1960s, when a handful of psychedelic evangelists inadvertently catalyzed a powerful backlash against what was then a promising field of research. A unique and elegant blend of science, memoir, travel writing, history, and medicine, How to Change Your Mind is a triumph of participatory journalism. By turns dazzling and edifying, it is the gripping account of a journey to an exciting and unexpected new frontier in our understanding of the mind, the self, and our place in the world. The true subject of Pollan's "mental travelogue" is not just psychedelic drugs but also the eternal puzzle of human consciousness and how, in a world that offers us both suffering and joy, we can do our best to be fully present and find meaning in our lives.
