Book excerpt: In the last decade there have been numerous advances in the area of rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation, such as highly selective catalysts of industrial importance, new insights into mechanisms of the reaction, very selective asymmetric catalysts, in situ characterization and application to organic synthesis. The views on hydroformylation which still prevail in the current textbooks have become obsolete in several respects. Therefore, it was felt timely to collect these advances in a book. The book contains a series of chapters discussing several rhodium systems arranged according to ligand type, including asymmetric ligands, a chapter on applications in organic chemistry, a chapter on modern processes and separations, and a chapter on catalyst preparation and laboratory techniques. This book concentrates on highlights, rather than a concise review mentioning all articles in just one line. The book aims at an audience of advanced students, experts in the field, and scientists from related fields. The didactic approach also makes it useful as a guide for an advanced course.

Book excerpt: Mechanistic aspects of the asymmetric rhodium catalyzed hydroboration of vinyl arenes with catecholborane (HBCat) and pinacolborane (HBPin) have been probed. Competition studies conducted with catalysts bearing asymmetric ligands Josiphos or Quinap reveal substituent effects of varying sensitivity correlating to Hammett parameter sigma. In reactions involving the Quinap ligand, rho-values of +1.97 and +1.02 are observed for HBCat and HBPin, respectively. In Josiphos-ligated systems, rho-values of +1.38 and -3.17 are observed, indicating that the reaction proceeds through differing mechanisms depending on the borane employed. Labeling experiments reveal differences in the reversibility of the hydride insertion step of reaction depending on the ligand and borane implemented in hydroboration. A new methodology has been developed for regioselective rhodium-catalyzed hydroboration of internal olefins with pinacolborane. The addition of co-catalytic Lewis acids results in the activation of cationic rhodium catalysts in chlorinated solvents. Increased catalytic activity and regioselectivity are observed under these conditions. For internal alkyl olefins, selectivity for non-isomerized secondary boronate esters was found originate from the non-coordinating solvents employed in the reaction. For aromatic olefins, increased regioselectivity and reaction acceleration are both effects of the Lewis acid additive. Study of the reaction revealed that these properties are linked to Lewis acid-base mediated heterolytic B-H bond cleavage of pinacolborane, and suggests that the reagent is transferred to the rhodium catalyst as borenium ion and hydride moieties. Inhibition studies confirmed that Lewis acid is required throughout the reaction and does not solely act as an initiator.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter 1. A brief introduction to organometallic chemistry and catalysis is presented to explain the basics of the field to the reader. A few examples of catalysis, mainly hydroamination and hydrosilylation, and their mechanisms are presented. The significance of ligands in catalysis is also discussed. Chapter 2. Six new 3-iminophosphine ligands and their cationic (allyl)palladium complexes were synthesized. These catalytically active palladium complexes were utilized in the hydroamination of cyclohexylallene with secondary amines in order to better understand the mechanism of this hydroamination reaction. The kinetics of the reaction were also studied with the help of time-resolved proton NMR spectroscopy, as well as deuterium labeling experiments. Chapter 3. Four new [(3-iminophosphine)nickel(allyl)]OTf complexes were synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray crystallography. Equimolar reactions of these new complexes with secondary amines provided useful information on the activation of these complexes in the presence of secondary amines. They also catalyzed the hydroamination of terminal allenes with secondary amines to produce allylamines in moderate to high yields, which were then characterized by proton and carbon NMR spectroscopy and high resolution mass spectrometry. Chapter 4. A previously synthesized [(3-iminophosphine)palladium(allyl)]OTf complex was found to be an efficient catalyst for the hydrosilylation of allenes with a wide range of hydrosilanes. Several new allyl- and vinylsilanes were synthesized catalytically and fully characterized. The observed regioselectivity and a double labeled H/D experiment resolved the mechanism of the reaction while also explaining its regioselectivity. Chapter 5. Various cationic palladium and nickel complexes were investigated in the hydrosilylation of imines, ketones, and alkynes. Several new allylamine, silylether and vinylsilane compounds were formed in this study and characterized. Substrate scope and mechanisms of the catalytic reactions are discussed.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essentially molecular supported catalysts were synthesized by using organometallic complexes as precursors, such as Rh(CO)2(acac), Rh(C2H4)2(acac), Ir(CO)2(acac), and Ir(C2H4)2(acac) (where acac is acetylacetonate) and HY zeolite as a support. A goal was to obtain highly uniform solid catalysts with well-defined structures. Characterization by X-ray absorption (XAS) and infrared (IR) spectroscopies confirmed the anchoring of the metal to the support with a high degree of uniformity. IR and 29Si and 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra characterize the presence of amorphous regions in the zeolite, and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) identifies these amorphous regions, where iridium is more susceptible to aggregation than in the crystalline regions. Treatment of Ir(CO)2/HY zeolite with C2H4 and H2 at room temperature led to a family of species which includes Ir(CO)2, Ir(CO)(C2H4), Ir(CO)(C2H4)2, Ir(CO)(C2H5) and, tentatively, Ir(CO)(H). The identification of the species is based on XAS and IR spectra (including spectra of samples made with isotopically labeled ligands, 13CO and D2O) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The catalytic performance of isostructural rhodium and iridium species incorporating CO as a ligand was measured for the ethylene conversion; the CO not only acts as an inhibitor but it also as a probe molecule providing information about the electronic properties of the metal and of the species present during reaction. When isostructural rhodium and iridium diethylene species are bonded near each other on HY zeolite, the iridium complexes alter the selectivity of rhodium by spilling over hydrogen that hinders the interaction between ethylene and the acidic sites of the zeolite that act in concert with the rhodium, causing it to favor ethylene hydrogenation over dimerization. All these results show how structurally simple solid catalysts can be used to facilitate fundamental understanding of catalysts and their performance.
