Book excerpt: The first three decades of Bourbon rule in France coincided with a period of violent fragmentation followed by rapid renewal within the French Catholic community. In the early 1590s, when Henri IV - Protestant head of the Bourbon house - acceded to the throne, French Catholics were at war with each other as Leaguer and Navarrist factions fought both militarily and ideologically for control of Catholic France. However, by 1620 a partially reconciled French church was in the process of defining a distinctive reform movement as French Catholics, encouraged by their monarchs, sought to assimilate aspects of the international Catholic reformation with Gallican traditions to renew their church. By 1650 this French Catholic church, and its distinctive reform movement forged in the decades following the collapse of the Catholic League, had become one of the most influential movements in European Catholicism. This study reconsiders the forces behind these dramatic developments within the French church through the re-examination of a classic question in French history: Why was the Society of Jesus able to integrate successfully into the French church in the opening decades of the seventeenth-century, despite being expelled from much of the kingdom in 1594 for its alleged role in the attempted assassination of the king? The expulsion, recall and subsequent integration of the Society into the French church offers a unique window into the evolution of French Catholicism between 1590 and 1620. It provides new insight into how Henri IV re-established royal authority in the French Catholic church following the collapse of the Catholic League and how this development helped to heal the rifts in French Catholicism wrought by the Leaguer movement. Book excerpt: "Two observations initiated this study; the statistical fact that today less than 1% of the French population are evangelical Christians, despite centuries of Christianity present in France and multiplied missionary efforts in the twentieth century, and the the obvious lack of missiological studies about these poor results and the particularities of secularist France as mission field. A preliminary research project (survey concerning communication and relations in French churches) indicated the existence of a specific French mindset. An investigation of the place of religion throughout history and a sociological analysis of today's values and self-image in France provided insight into the French collective identity. This identity, compared to a relational approach of the New Testament Christian identity, led to the identification of conflict zones. Among the different possiblities for handling the conflict, the incarnational ministry model was withheld. This study concludes with the proposal of a six-principle framework for a church-growth inducing approach that takes into account the cultural specificities of the French mission field.

Of his many works, The Belief of Catholics is his best-known book and his premiere piece of apologetics. While it deals extensively with Protestantism, its target is more the unchurched or lightly-church modern who, if he gives any thought at all to Catholicism, thinks it mildly foreign. As Knox knew, it is not the most difficult part of modern apologetics to convince the devoted Protestant that he has much of Christian truth but now needs to move on to the rest, which is found only in the Catholic Church. The most difficult part is convincing the nominal Protestant (or nominal Catholic), the vaguely religious person, or the person without any religious inclinations that God really does exist, that His existence matters, and that only knowledge of Him and obedience to Him can lead to answers to the questions that haunt everyone. Knox discusses ""the truths Catholics hold"", ""the rules Catholics acknowledge"", ""the strength Catholics receive"", and ""the ambitions Catholics honour"". These truths, rules, strengths, and ambitions were attractive to the book's first readers. They were answers to the ever-present ""Why?"". These answers will prove equally attractive to today's readers who, after so many decades of failed isms, yearn for understanding and commitment even more than did their grandparents' generation.
