Book excerpt: Excerpt from England and the Catholic Church Under Queen Elizabeth I am indebted for a few documents which throw light on the doings of English pirates in the Mediterranean (appendix Papers in the Vatican suggested the idea of making researches in this little used collection. Among English archives, the most important are those belonging to the catholic cathedral of Westminster. No others can compare with them in value for the inner history of English catholicism. As their contents, however, are of importance only from the end of the sixteenth century, the letters, reports, and memorials of English catholics and Roman officials which they contain, are only of service for the last chapter of this volume. The rich treasures of the Public Record Office have been already largely made public in the Calendars of State Papers. However, for some series (especially Italian Sizzler), I have been able to draw upon fresh sources of information. As regards the results yielded by the Recusant Rolls, I must refer to Ch. I., 4. The British Museum and the Bodleian Library were invaluable to me on account of their original editions of royal proclamations, and, above all, for their rich store of pamphlets and broadsides. For although it was only in the seventeenth century that the classical period of political pamphleteering dawned for England, still as early as the time of Elizabeth, broadsides and pamphlets had become such a power in public life that no student of history can pass over these sources of information with impunity. This is perhaps more true for the history of English catholicism than for any other department (cf. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of the Catholic Revival in England, Vol. 1 of 2: 1781-1803 But the period of nearly a quarter Of a century dealt with in the present volumes may be considered the most important of all, for it was during this time that it may fairly be said that the tide turned; when the gradual shrinkage of the Catholic body which had been proceed ing steadily for over two centuries ceased, and a future began to open out before the Catholics Of England in a manner to which their forefathers had been strangers. This period may therefore be appropriately called the Dawn of that Catholic Revival which has been proceed ing ever since. The number and variety of influences at work, the abolition of the Penal Laws, the influx of the French Refugee Clergy, the return of our Colleges and Convents to English soil, and other influences as well, combine to fill it with instructive historical lessons. It has been endeavoured to present a history of the Eng lish Catholic body in general, together with a detailed account of their development in London and the home counties, - the old London District, as it was called. For obvious reasons no attempt has been made to de scribe the Catholic missions throughout the country. In many cases this has been done by books published locally by the priests of the missions they concern: in at least one instance a whole county has been covered in a single book. The work of the Catholic Record Society has in many cases rendered valuable assistance towards research of this kind, and it is much to be hoped that histories of other missions or districts may continue to be written. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Primitive and Catholic Faith in Relation to the Church of England The history of Christianity, when viewed in one aspect, has been a long-continued struggle against that spirit of priestcraft or sacerdotalism, which, germinating in the time of the apostles, (when they, speaking by the Holy Ghost, predicted the rise of that fearful power, variously described under the titles, that Man of Sin, the Wicked One, Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the appears to have received its final accomplishment in our day, when a body of men, under the high-sounding title of the Vatican Council, have decreed the Infallibility of a poor aged sinner like ourselves, making him thereiby equal with God, or, to quote the exact words of Scripture, as God sitting in the temple of God, showing himself to be a god. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Church of England: Pre-Reformation Period It is to be presumed that a reason may be assigned for every book which is written. It may not always be evident to the reader, but the author must be conscious of some cause which moved him to write. In the present instance the moving cause was the lack of any work which seemed to the writer to trace the long story of the Church of England with sufficient brevity and sufficient fulness. Dry epitomes there are in abundance. Scholarly researches into the most remote past come forth year by year. The history of portions of the long centuries, or personal narrative, has been often written with appreciative genius. But there seemed more than room for a connected narrative which might be useful to one who is commencing acquaintance with English Church history, and which might also possess sufficient interest for the general reader. The Church of England is at once old and new. It has been reformed, but its heritage has come down to it through more than a millennium. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of England and the Holy See So much has been written on the subject of the Oxford Movement that it might seem superfluous at this time of day to attempt anything more, were there not a danger of its teaching being so diluted as to lose its taste, or so explained away as to be robbed of its meaning. After all, the Centenary, by the very meaning of the term, is intended to recall something that happened a hundred years ago - a scene that we can picture in the University Church at Oxford, and a sermon that was preached in the presence of his Majesty's judges by John Keble on July 14th, 1833; a moment, moreover, that was not to end in itself, but was to mark the commencement of a great Catholic revival, destined to spread throughout the country, to make its way into our Colonies, and even to command the attention of the world; a revival that was stamped with the Catholic stamp to start with, and was intended to retain that stamp to the end; a movement that has had to push its way from the first, in the face of persistent Opposition, persecution, and even prohibition; and to deliver its message, whether men would hear or whether they would forbear, calling upon them to declare themselves, and to say, not whether they liked its teaching, but whether they were willing to learn it, to regulate their lives by it, and if necessary to suffer for it. The Catholic revival never has been a popular movement, in the superficial sense of the term; and although it can point back in the past to a succession of victories, none of its positions has been won Without fighting for it, some of them not without also going to prison. Now, men do not go to prison for nothing, nor do the authorities step in, unless there is something they wish to stop.
