Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaysia pulled itself back from the brink on 9 May 2018. That day the majority of its voting population decided to topple the Barisan Nasional government that had been in power for over 60 years and that had come to be seen as corrupt beyond redemption, and incompetent to boot. Lined up against the unpopular administration of Najib Razak was a coalition led by former strongman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who at the age of 92 had decided to return to Malaysian politics to stop the rot which many believed had begun during his earlier period in power, in 1981-2003. As the oldest prime minister in world history, he is now setting about creating structure that he believes will lead to a Malaysia that will achieve the Vision 2020 that he first propounded in 1991. This vision dovetails with the ideals of the highly influential Reformasi Movement which was ignited by the sacking of his deputy, Anwar Ibrahim, in 1998. This compilation of insightful analyses is Ooi Kee Beng’s seventh, and discusses key events from the last five years leading up to 9 May 2018 and beyond. These seven books together cover the strange period we may come to know as the Inter-Mahathir Era, and the present volume discusses some of the challenges facing the new government, and the Malaysian population in general, now that the Barisan Nasional has imploded.

Book excerpt: This book was written with the premise that our thoughts and lives require no theoretical defense. It is our intrinsic dissertation of life. God determines all outcomes. Catharsis speaks quietly to the commonality and hidden experiences held internally and encourages the opportunity for discussion and debate. It addresses a few of the many complex humanistic contemplations we reference and make relatable by introducing alternative perspectives for resolve during a productive conversation. The text within these pages expresses a sincere recognition of appreciation we hold for the blessings in our lives while also addressing some of the challenging situations that can occur daily, inconsequently providing significant lessons learned and unique takeaways for each individual. You will read eclectic anthologies, prose, and poetry that creatively discuss relationships and familial ties while boldly resonating with the continuous message that it is not only important to know how to use what you have but to intuitively use what you know! Keeping in mind that sometimes revisiting our perspectives with respect to slight modifications can lead to the positive change we need. The results, however, have the potential to be the transformative catalyst you require, a pivotal moment for turning the tides in your favor. Catharsis encourages people to manage cultural differences and merge together through the simple process of cathartic thought when jotted down or put on paper during productive doodling or, as described in this book, the transcription of "literary art." Additionally, this book advocates that a therapeutic purge is just as necessary as a healthy detox to rid oneself of mental and emotional toxins that can play havoc on your overall daily quality of life. In this journal-style compilation, you will definitely find a unique, thought-provoking literary collection that parallels life encounters pondered and perhaps never discussed with the ultimate purpose to convey a basic message of inclusivity and inspiration to the reader. It provides a message that is intuitively repetitive and heartfelt that simply says, "You are not alone." How you feel about your journey in life is important and perhaps more relatable than you've ever imagined once you decide to share the ink!

Book excerpt: Very often, we engage in conversations with ourselves that allow us to empty what is at the very core of our being. Sometimes, we cast them as cares in prayers to God. Amidst the internal baggage we carry, there is a wealth of thoughts, ideas and feelings that are worth their weight in gold to friends, family, and acquaintances and even to those who are poised to be blessed, simply because we cleared our minds. Catharsis is my personal excavation of piles of stuff I carry on the inside. I parceled them off in packages of poetry. Sift through the rubble, see what you find. There are poems of withdrawal, strength, courage, compassion, hope, love and freedom - poems of war and peace. Each poem is a conversation with God that lightened my load and my life. Freedom for life and living is easily accessed after a period of Catharsis.

Book excerpt: Destroying human habitat and taking human lives, disasters, be they natural, man-made, or a combination, threaten large populations, even entire nations and societies. They also disrupt the existing order and cause discontinuity in our sense of self and our perceptions of the world. To restore order, not only must human beings be rescued and affected areas rebuilt, but the reality of the catastrophe must also be transformed into narrative. The essays in this collection examine representations of disaster in literature, film, and mass media in German and international contexts, exploring the nexus between disruption and recovery through narrative from the eighteenth century to the present. Topics include the Lisbon earthquake, the Paris Commune, the Hamburg and Dresden fire-bombings in the Second World War, nuclear disasters in Alexander Kluge's films, the filmic aesthetics of catastrophe, Yoko Tawada's lectures on the Fukushima disaster and Christa Wolf's novel Störfall in light of that same disaster, Joseph Haslinger and the tsunami of 2004, traditions regarding avalanche disaster in the Tyrol, and the problems and implications of defining disaster. Contributors: Carol Anne Costabile-Heming, Yasemin Dayioglu-Yücel, Janine Hartman, Jan Hinrichsen, Claudia Jerzak, Lars Koch, Franz Mauelshagen, Tanja Nusser, Torsten Pflugmacher, Christoph Weber. Katharina Gerstenberger is Professor and Chair of the Department of Languages and Literature at the University of Utah. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of this book goes back to the fall of 1971. I was beginning my fourth year as an Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Florida when I became depressed. I went into psychotherapy, and after much emotional pain, learned to grieve for my handicapped son. While in therapy I read widely in hopes of understanding and helping myself; after my recovery, I continued my interest in psychotherapy at a professional level. In 1975, I attended a workshop by Albert Ellis on rational-emotive therapy and was impressed by his approach. I decided to study rational psychotherapy with Maxie Maltsby at the University of Kentucky. After 4 months I returned to the Uni versity of Florida, teaching courses in the area of personality and beginning to write this book, which at that time was to be only about the rational approach to change. However, by early 1978, I was depressed again. I returned to my original therapist, who had recently become interested in a variation of primal therapy. I found this therapy very powerful and lengthy; 2 years later, I ended the ther apy, feeling fit, but unsure what to make of my experience. I still found the ideas in rational therapy useful, but was certain that cathartic approaches were also helpful. I returned to writing the book, this time seeking to explain how these two different approaches could both be therapeutic.

Short for Katharsis. What Is Your Catharsis? is a collection of letters and poems that allow you to feel; feel anger, love, vengeance, forgiveness, nostalgia, disgust amid the myriad of emotions we feel daily. You are going to be privy to some of the most unique characters who will change the way you look at life; some you may want to embrace and some you may want to unmeet. But what they do have in common is that they burst with emotion. Sometimes it’s easier to feel somebody else’s emotions than feeling your own. So allow yourself to feel intense emotions from a distance and let it all out when a character you relate to experiences catharsis. Remember, catharsis is power, and to use this power, you must undergo emotions. When something makes you smile, stop for a minute. Highlight a quote that reminds you of someone. Divulge in the nostalgic experiences in the book and look at your old photos. Read on, and let What Is Your Catharsis? help you find your catharsis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One result of the Asian economic crisis has been to shatter the belief that Asian ways of management are superior to Western ways. Now, just to survive, Asian firms have come to rethink their entire way of managing, and in his latest book, Richter, assisted by his contributing authors, gives a sharply focused analysis of how they are doing it. Emerging questions are how do Asian firms adjust to the new economic realities? and How do they develop their management style? There are plenty of new opportunities in Asia to play the new game, but they must be grasped and productively channeled. Richter and his contributors conclude that in the end, the Asian economic crisis, or catharsis, may well be a blessing in disguise. It provides an opportunity to completely review the way things stand in Asia. Like entrepreneurs who built the Asian economies, today's firms have the opportunity to lead a revival if they can redirect their businesses. This is an important resource for professionals in all multinational organizations and for academics and their upper-level students of international business.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catharsis of an Unstable Mind is a book that contains my writings from about the 5th grade (when my parents divorced) to about 2003. I wrote when I was manic or when I was depressed and even when I was drunk. It's like I couldn't sleep unless I got all those thoughts out of my head and then I could lay my head down and sleep. I had kept my writings in a file all these years and when I had my nervous breakdown, my medications weren't working like they used to and I felt manic and pulled all the writings out to look over. It was then I started to work on compiling my poems for publishing. I feel like the title explains how I feel. Putting this book together has helped me work through some issues and it gave me focus in such a confusing time. I hope that maybe it will touch someone and they will seek help if they need it, for whatever reason (drugs, alcohol or mental health). And know this, you are not alone!
