Book Synopsis Catholicism and Children's Literature in France by : Sophie Heywood
Download or read book Catholicism and Children's Literature in France written by Sophie Heywood and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length history of the classic French children’s author, the Comtesse de Ségur. Virtually unknown in the English-speaking world, in France, Ségur is a national icon and a cultural phenomenon. Generations of children have grown up reading her stories. This book combines a discussion of her life, her works, and their reception with a broader analysis of the cultural context of the mid-nineteenth century. It offers a unique insight into the political engagement of Catholic women through the medium of children’s literature and education, and brings out new aspects of the history of publishing aimed at children, with particular reference to the market for books for girls. With its lively subject matter and accessible style, this book will appeal not only to scholars of nineteenth-century France, but also to specialists and students interested in the fields of children’s literature, gender studies, and religious history.
Book Synopsis Jewish Marriage in Antiquity by : Michael L. Satlow
Download or read book Jewish Marriage in Antiquity written by Michael L. Satlow and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2001-04-15 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marriage today might be a highly contested topic, but certainly no more than it was in antiquity. Ancient Jews, like their non-Jewish neighbors, grappled with what have become perennial issues of marriage, from its idealistic definitions to its many practical forms to questions of who should or should not wed. In this book, Michael Satlow offers the first in-depth synthetic study of Jewish marriage in antiquity, from ca. 500 B.C.E. to 614 C.E. Placing Jewish marriage in its cultural milieu, Satlow investigates whether there was anything essentially "Jewish" about the institution as it was discussed and practiced. Moreover, he considers the social and economic aspects of marriage as both a personal relationship and a religious bond, and explores how the Jews of antiquity negotiated the gap between marital realities and their ideals. Focusing on the various experiences of Jews throughout the Mediterranean basin and in Babylonia, Satlow argues that different communities, even rabbinic ones, constructed their own "Jewish" marriage: they read their received traditions and rituals through the lens of a basic understanding of marriage that they shared with their non-Jewish neighbors. He also maintains that Jews idealized marriage in a way that responded to the ideals of their respective societies, mediating between such values as honor and the far messier realities of marital life. Employing Jewish and non-Jewish literary texts, papyri, inscriptions, and material artifacts, Satlow paints a vibrant portrait of ancient Judaism while sharpening and clarifying present discussions on modern marriage for Jews and non-Jews alike.

Book Synopsis The Image of the Virgin Mary in the Akathistos Hymn by : Leena Mari Peltomaa
Download or read book The Image of the Virgin Mary in the Akathistos Hymn written by Leena Mari Peltomaa and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Akathistos Hymn, the most famous work of Byzantine hymnography, has been enshrined in the Orthodox liturgy since the year 626, and its image of the Virgin Mary has exerted a strong influence upon Marian poetry and literature. Anonymous, undated and highly rhetorical, the hymn has presented a challenge to scholars over the years. This study has been undertaken by an innovative method. The approach brings new insights to the era which brought forth the hymn, and the metaphorical image of the Virgin becomes conceptually accessible to the modern-day reader. The investigation leads to the conclusion that the Council of Ephesus (431) constitutes the most likely historical context for the hymn's composition. The book will be of value to all scholars of early Byzantine and Marian studies.

Book Synopsis Religion, Society and Politics in France Since 1789 by : Frank Tallett

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been carefully planned to give a coherent account of the impact of religion in France over the last two hundred years. Most books in English dealing with the subject are now dated, and in any case concentrate on institutional questions of church-state relations rather than on the wider influence of religion throughout France. These essays summarise recent French research and provide a concise up-to-date introduction to the history of modern French Catholicism.

Book Synopsis The Missionary Outreach of the West Indian Church by : Horace O. Russell
Download or read book The Missionary Outreach of the West Indian Church written by Horace O. Russell and published by Research in Religion and Family. This book was released on 2000 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Missionary Outreach of the West Indian Church is the story of Jamaican Baptists, ex-slaves who, four years after Emancipation (1838), established a witness in the Cameroons (West Africa) in cooperation with their British pastors and with the reluctant aid of the Baptist Missionary Society of London. Professor Russell analyzes the relationship between the undertaking of the mission and the new self-awareness of a freed people. The institutions created to achieve their aims are discussed and their fortunes are followed amid the chaotic ecclesiastical, economic, and political happenings consequent upon the Anglo/Hispanic rivalry at the time. The book is also a study of what happens when a mission-field becomes a mission agency with missionaries of its own.
Book Synopsis At the Crossroads of Art and Religion by : Hetty Zock
Download or read book At the Crossroads of Art and Religion written by Hetty Zock and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 'turn to the subject' in modernity, aesthetic experiences have become crucial in the creation of meaning. This explains why art and religion are becoming increasingly intermingled in late modern Western culture. The search for meaning is no longer confined to traditional religious settings and it is especially in art that people are looking for moral and spiritual significance. Religion is being aestheticised while art is being spiritualised. This volume contains studies on the interface between art and religion. Scholars from art studies, theology, philosophy and psychology of religion address the following questions: What psychological and religious functions does art fulfil? What are the similarities and differences between aesthetic and religious experiences? How does the aestheticising of religion affect theological thinking? How does the spiritualising of art affect artistic practices and theory? Case studies are taken from literature, visual art, film and opera, both from 'high' and popular culture. Among others, there are chapters on J.M. Coetzee's novel Waiting for the Barbarians, Richard Wagner's operas, the Harry Potter books and the concept of beauty from a theological perspective. The contributors all highlight the crucial role of human imaginative capabilities and the capacity of art to open up wider horizons of meaning.
